Rresearch focuses on the interdisciplinary field of molecular and polymeric materials with particular emphasis on high technology electro-optic and photonic materials and emphasis on novel photonic polymer device construction technologies. After careful control of molecular design and synthesis, research result dealts with high-performance topics including electro-optic ultra-fast switching, solid-state polymer laser, and polymer photonic crystals for low power operation. Though these polymer materials and optical devices have been considered as a future technology, it is becoming important recently because materials can provide much easier processing capability with promising properties compared with inorganic processes. Research is employed to approach “molecular engineering” to tailor size, shape, sequence, and functionality of organic and polymeric materials and explore their applications to: ・Electro-optic polymers for high-speed communications technology ・Polymer solid-state photonics device ・Fabrication of nano-micro scale polymer optical structures To complements these efforts, research maintain state-of-the-art research fields in materials chemistry, photonics, and polymer nanao-micro scale manufacturing.

    2005.4   近年、新技術研究分野において、多様な光・電子特性を有する有機・高分子に主要な働きを持たせ、新材料へ応用展開していく研究に期待が高まっている。氏は、分子を取り巻くナノスケールの空間がフォトニック特性の制御に極めて重要であることに着眼し、新材料であるデンドリマー(球状高分子)が持つナノ空間や分子配向性を化学合成によって制御し、物理・化学的側面から光デバイス実現への基礎検討を行った。本研究により、有機・高分子の先端科学分野への応用展開が可能となり、材料の低コスト化や省エネルギー化、ソフト材料としての環境性や生体適合性など、将来の経済・社会の発展に寄与することが期待される。

    With the technological advances such as the cloud computing and the rapid growth of use of Internet services, the information communication technology sector, especially datacentres, is experiencing an exponential increase in the energy consumption and hence a greater cooling challenge. One of the possible approaches to reduce the energy consumption in the datacentres is increasing the ambient temperature. However, it puts forward more stringent requirements for the reliability and durability of the optoelectronic components equipped in the datacentres at high ambient temperature. Herein, we fabricate and demonstrate silicon-polymer hybrid (SPH) modulators which feature an excellent reliability with an excellent signal fidelity retained at temperature up to 110 oC without deploying any energy-consuming temperature stabilization units, and meanwhile support single-lane data rates beyond 100 gigabits per second (up to 200 gigabits per second) with an electro-optic bandwidth of 68 GHz even after a long-period exposure to high temperature (100 hours, 90 oC). This is achieved by taking advantages of the high electro-optic (EO) activities (in-device EO figure of merit: n3r33=1021 pm V-1), low dielectric constant, and high glass transition temperature (Tg, 172 oC) of the developed side-chain EO polymers on a silicon substrate. Our high-temperature-resistant SPH modulator simultaneously fulfils the requirements on the bandwidth, EO efficiency and thermal stability for EO modulators. It could provide high-speed interconnects for energy-hungry applications such as data communication, effectively addressing the energy consumption issue for the next-generation optical communication networks. Moreover, it could also implement reliable interconnects for applications in harsh environment such as 5G, autonomous driving, LiDAR and aviation spacecraft systems.
