A recent molecular phylogeny of the genus Crematogaster reclassified some members of the former subgenera Paracrema and Physocrema into the C. inflata-group, now comprised of five species: C. ampullaris, C. inflata, C. modiglianii, C. onusta and C. subcircularis. Here, a molecular analysis of the Crematogaster inflata-group and eight other species of the former subgenus Physocrema (C. aurita, C. difformis, C. mucronata, C. physothorax, C. sewardi, C. tanakai, C. vacca and C. yamanei) is conducted using a total of c. 4 kb of sequence data from six nuclear protein-coding genes and two mitochondrial genes. Monophyly of the C. inflata-group is strongly supported. A revised morphological delineation of the subgroups is proposed, supported by the molecular phylogeny: three morphologically distinct subgroups, the C. difformis-subgroup, the C. vacca-subgroup and the C. inflata-subgroup. Molecular dating and biogeographical analyses indicate that the C. inflata-group originated in the Sundaic region around the Middle Miocene 12 Mya and diversified from the Late Miocene to Pliocene. Ancestral state reconstructions indicate that the C. inflata-group diversified from an ancestor with a swollen propodeum and circular-shaped metapleural gland opening. Biogeographical reconstruction indicates that dispersal to peripheral areas and allopatry due to sea-level changes shaped the evolutionary history of the C. inflata-group.

<p>Due to the development of logistics in recent years, there has been a problem of exotic species moving beyond their original distribution areas. Among them, there have been many cases of attempted invasions of exotic species that seem to have come through ships, and in northern Kyushu, fire ants, a specified alien species, have been confirmed at Hakata Port. Hakata Port serves as a departure and arrival point for the surrounding islands, and people and goods are frequently transported via ferry to Iki, Tsushima, and Goto Islands. In this study, we investigated the distribution of exotic ants inland and their effects on native ant communities. Ants were surveyed at various locations from port areas to inland areas in 10 major ports in northern Kyushu, and only in port areas in 6 smaller ports. Bait traps using tuna and honey were used to identify the dominant ant species at each site. So far, 66,865 ants of 27 species have been identified by the bait trap survey. The exotic ant, <i>Pheidole indica</i>, the third most common ant in terms of frequency of occurrence and the second most common in terms of number of individuals, suggests that it is the dominant ant around the port area. In inland areas, however, the number of non-native ants tended to decrease in areas surrounded by rice fields and forests, while the number and frequency of native ants tended to increase.</p>

<p>Ants play an important role in forest ecosystems in terms of biomass and various biological interactions, but non-destructive continuous observation of colonies is difficult for species nesting in trees. During the investigations of forest arboreal small mammals using wood nest boxes between January and December 2021, nestings of <i>Camponotus kiusiuensis</i> Santschi were observed at high frequencies in a census site on Mount Kyougatake, Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan. We surveyed the nesting site preference of <i>C. kiusiuensis</i> and conducted monthly observations of colony compositions from spring to winter. Among three types of nest boxes, small (500 cm3), medium (1,000 cm3), and large (2,000 cm3), <i>C. kiusiuensis</i> nested in the large nest boxes at significantly higher frequencies. Although the nest boxes were either set at low (1.5–2.0 m high) or high (3.5–4.0 m high) positions of trees, no significant differences were detected in the nesting sites between them. The number of colonies was the highest in April and it gradually decreased from spring to autumn. In the nest boxes in which colonies of <i>C. kiusiuensis</i> were continuously observed until autumn, the developmental stages of immature individuals inside were almost uniform: larvae were observed from April to June, pupae in July, and many adults including males and new alate queens were found in August and September. No or very few ant individuals were observed in October and November, suggesting that workers moved the larvae to other places in late autumn. Based on our observations, the arboreal nest boxes seem not to be suitable sites for overwintering.</p>

Several phragmotic species in the ant genus Carebara Westwood, 1840 with a cephalic shield are known from the Old World, but species with an anteriorly truncated head seem to be unknown until now. A new species, resembling the phragmotic workers of the ant genus Colobopsis, is here described as Carebara colobopsis Hosoishi & Yamane, sp. nov., based on major and minor worker found in Cambodia. This new species is similar to Carebara acutispina (Xu) and C. obtusidenta (Xu) in some important characters, but distinguished from the latter two by distinct metanotum and deep groove in front of metanotal disc in the major worker, and longer head and deep metanotal groove in the minor worker. This is the first confirmed record of a truncated phragmotic head in the major worker of the genus Carebara. We propose the Carebara acutispina species group to include all the three species, present a diagnosis of this group, and provide a key to species based on the major and minor worker castes.

In Japan, nine species have been known in the ant genus Tetramorium, of which five or more are considered tramps. A key to the queens of nine Tetramorium species found in Japan is presented. The tramp species T. tonganum Mayr, 1870 is excluded from the key because no queen was available for us, while T. pacificum Mayr, 1870 is included because it was once intercepted at a port in Japan and exotic queens were available. Diagnosis of the queen of each species is provided together with differences between the two female castes.

This study aimed to clarify the species diversity, phylogenetic relationship, and life history of chrysidid wasps attacking the egg of stick insects. Some East Asian genera were taxonomically revised. Phylogenetic relationships among amisegine genera and loboscelidinine lineage were inferred from phylogenetic analysis. Stick insects' eggs were attacked by ants and crickets other than chrysidid wasps. Egg-carrying behavior was observed in both Amiseginae and Loboscelidinae, but more developed in the latter.
