Abstract Pressure-density-temperature (PρT) properties, vapor pressures, and saturated liquid and vapor densities for refrigerants R 1234ze(Z) (cis-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoroprop-1-ene; CF3CHCHF) and R 245fa (1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane; C3H3F5) were measured with two types of isochoric methods. Pressure was measured with a digital quartz pressure transducer. Temperature was measured with 25 Ω standard platinum resistance thermometer on the ITS-90 temperature scale. Density was calculated from the mass of sample and the inner volume of pressure vessel. By using the present vapor pressure data, new vapor pressure correlations for R 1234ze(Z) and R 245fa have been formulated. In addition, the critical temperature Tc, critical density ρc, and critical pressure Pcwere directly determined on the basis of direct observation of the meniscus disappearance.

    This study performed surface tension measurements assisted by molecular simulations for new candidate refrigerants R1132(E) and its isomer R1132a, which exhibit extremely low global warming potentials. Because the measured saturation density required for the surface tension measurement by the differential capillary rise method is insufficient at low temperatures, the density data was extrapolated by molecular simulations. In the process, quantum chemical and molecular dynamics simulations were performed to reproduce the vapor–liquid equilibrium state, and the accuracy of the obtained molecular force fields was verified by comparing them with the measured data. Based on the obtained surface tension data, validated temperature correlation equations were proposed for R1132(E) and R1132a, respectively, validated in the temperature range from 209 K to 225 K. Furthermore, their parachors, which relate surface tension to saturation density, were determined from the above data as 116.1 and 116.7 for R1132(E) and R1132a, respectively.

  • Thermodynamic Property Measurements of Binary Refrigerant Blends HFO1123+R290

    PVTx properties of 0.80 mass fraction HFO1123 + 0.20 mass fraction R290 and 0.65 mass fraction HFO1123 + 0.35 mass fraction R290 refrigerant blends were measured in the temperature range from 300 K to 400 K and at pressures up to 6.9 MPa by the isochoric method along 6 isochores for each blend including the vapor and liquid phases. The expanded uncertainties in temperature and pressure are estimated to be 5 mK and 1.0 kPa (k = 2). The relative expanded uncertainties in density and mass fraction are estimated to be 0.15% and 0.0005 (k = 2), respectively. Saturated densities of these blends were directly measured in the temperature range between 319 K and 342 K by the visual observation of the meniscus disappearance, and also determined from the inflection points of the PVTx isochore-lines. Finally, the critical points of the blends were determined by the consideration of the meniscus disappearing level as well as the intensity of the critical opalescence as Tc = 334.91 ± 0.01 K, ρc = 402 ± 3 kg·m−3 and Pc = 4392 ± 3 kPa for 0.80 mass fraction HFO1123 + 0.20 mass fraction R290, and Tc = 340.94 ± 0.02 K, ρc = 357 ± 3 kg·m−3 and Pc = 4429 ± 5 kPa for 0.65 mass fraction HFO1123 + 0.35 mass fraction R290. A Helmholtz energy equation of state (EOS) was compared with the experimental data, and is in good agreement with the obtained PVTx property data with an absolute average deviation (AAD) of 1.1% for 0.80 mass fraction HFO1123 + 0.20 mass fraction R290, and that of 0.7% for 0.65 mass fraction HFO1123 + 0.35 mass fraction R290 in density. In addition, vapor-liquid equilibrium data of HFO1123 + R290 blends were obtained from 263 K to 323 K based on the recirculation method. A mixing parameter of a simple cubic EOS was determined, and the EOS represents the VLE data with an AAD of 0.73% in pressure and 0.010 mol·mol−1 in mole fraction.

    This study presents a comparative energy, exergy, and life cycle climate performance (LCCP) analysis of various refrigerants in a cascade refrigeration system (CRS). The refrigerants analyzed in the low-temperature cycle (LTC) include R-23, R-116, R-41, R-170, R-1150, and R-1132a whereas high-temperature cycle (HTC) utilizes R-404A, R-455A, R-454C, R-459B, R-161, R-290, R-1270, and R-1234yf. For the first time for CRS, LCCP analysis is conducted and fourth generation low GWP and less flammable prospective refrigerants R-1132a, R-455A, R-454C, R-459B are analyzed. The study aims to find a refrigerant pair that outperforms R-23/R-404A in terms of thermodynamic efficiency while also considering environmental impact and safety considerations. Among the 48 refrigerant groups analyzed, the study reveals that R-170/R-161 and R-41/R-161 demonstrate superior performance in terms of thermodynamic efficiency and environmental impact assessment whereas the largest exergy destruction components are HTC/LTC compressors. However, if flammability is a major concern, the recommended refrigerant pair is R-1132a/R-1234yf, as it is a suitable alternative in terms of safety considerations while still maintaining favorable thermodynamic and environmental performance.

    Vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) of binary refrigerant blends, HFO1123 + CF3I and HFC125 + CF3I, were measured at temperature range from 263 to 323 K by the recirculation method. A sample was filled into an equilibrium cell of the experimental apparatus equipped with optical windows in the vapor–liquid equilibrium condition, and the saturated vapor and liquid were extracted from each phase in small quantities. The compositions of the samples were measured by a gas chromatograph with a thermal conductivity detector and a Porapak-Q column. The expanded uncertainties in temperature, pressure, and composition are estimated to be 10 mK, 3.0 kPa, and 0.007 mol·mol−1, respectively. Based on the experimental data, mixing parameters of a cubic equation of state (PR EOS) and Helmholtz energy EOSs were determined. The VLE behavior (temperature, pressure, and composition relation) calculated from the PR EOS and the Helmholtz energy EOSs show good agreement with each other. The PR EOS reasonably represents the VLE data with an absolute average deviation (AAD) of 1.8% for HFO1123 + CF3I and that of 1.1% for HFC125 + CF3I in pressure, and with an AAD of 0.012 mol·mol−1 in mole fraction for both mixtures. In addition, PVTx properties of HFO1123 + CF3I and HFC125 + CF3I blends were measured from 300 to 400 K and at pressures up to 6.9 MPa by the isochoric method. The expanded uncertainties in temperature and pressure are estimated to be 5 mK and 1.0 kPa (k = 2). The relative expanded uncertainties in density and mass fraction are estimated to be 0.0015 and 0.0005 (k = 2), respectively. The Helmholtz energy EOSs with the mixing parameters determined on the basis of the VLE data were compared with the experimental PVTx property data, and the EOSs represent them in the vapor phase except for the isochores near the critical density with an AAD of 0.9% in density.

    R-1132a is increasingly being considered as a low global warming potential component in alternative mixtures to R-23 in specialized low temperature and ultra-low temperature refrigeration systems. Though the thermodynamic properties of R-1132a were investigated in several studies up to 2018, reinvestigations have been carried out in recent years. In order to contribute toward these renewed measurements, the critical parameters of R-1132a were experimentally re-determined. Thirty-two vapor pressures from 240 K to the critical temperature, fifteen saturated vapor and six saturated liquid densities above 254 K and the PvT properties in both the vapor phase (98 points) and liquid phase (34 points) from densities of 50 kg·m−3 to 760 kg·m−3 were also measured. Specific correlations for each of these properties were optimized and compared to previously available data from the literature. Additionally, the Peng–Robinson equation of state was used to represent the aforementioned properties and further utilized to determine the enthalpy and entropy of R-1132a.

    A new isochoric apparatus was developed for measuring PvT properties of refrigerants from 240 K to 410 K. This temperature range extends measurements below ambient (~ 300 K) and overlaps with the range of other isochoric apparatuses in NEXT-RP centre of I2CNER, Kyushu University. PvT properties of four refrigerants (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane, R-134a; pentafluoroethane, R-125; trifluoromethane, R-23 and 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene, R-1234yf) were measured for the inner volume calculation and validation exercise. Vapour pressures of 1,1-difluoroethene (R-1132a) were measured between 240 K and 296 K (14 data points). All property measurements were conducted for heating up and cooling down phases. The expanded uncertainty values of temperature, pressure and density using the new isochoric apparatus are U(T) = 10 mK, U(p) = 1 kPa and Ur(ρ) = 0.002, respectively, where the coverage of 2 was adopted for 95% confident levels. The measured vapour pressures were fitted using Wagner-type and Antoine-type equations and compared with the published data.

    <p><b> </b>R 473A is an emerging four-component refrigerant blend for replacing high GWP and flammable refrigerants currently used for low temperature applications. Since limited prior publications on the thermodynamic properties of R 473A are available, the initial investigation of its vapor phase <i>pvT</i> properties were carried out and are presented here. The <i>pvT</i> properties were measured using two separate isochoric apparatus for the temperature range of 270 K to 400 K, density range of 43 kg·m<sup>-3</sup> to 210 kg·m<sup>-3 </sup>and at pressures below 7 MPa. The virial equation of state was used to verify the measured properties. The linearized virial equation was used to determine the second and third virial coefficients. This method provided an absolute average deviation in pressure and density of 0.29% and 0.38%, respectively. The measured properties were all within 1% deviations which signify the accuracy of the results and the potential for them to be used as preliminary data for developing a more accurate representation of R 473A properties through equations of state.</p>

    R1132(E) (trans-1,2-difluoroethylene, C2H2F2) is a potential next generation refrigerant to be utilized in air conditioning applications. This hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant possesses an extremely low-GWP value below 1 and it is an excellent candidate for replacing R32 in blends such as R410A, which are subjected to local and international greenhouse gas regulations for limiting global warming. Two isochoric apparatus were used to measure the saturation pressures of R1132(E) from 240 K to its critical temperature. At the critical temperature, the critical pressure of R1132(E) was also directly measured. Twenty-four saturation pressures including the critical point were used for optimizing a Wagner-type equation representing the saturation pressure curve. The absolute average deviation of the saturation pressures of R1132(E) predicted by the model using the fitted parameters and the experimental data is 0.02%. The optimized Wagner-type equation of saturation pressures is used for determining the acentric factor of R1132(E) as 0.2433, which is further utilized for the prediction of the saturation pressures using the Peng-Robinson cubic equation of state within an absolute average deviation of 0.31%.

    The urge to replace hydrofluorocarbons which possess high global warming potentials has taken center stage in the air conditioning industry due to both international and local policies such as the Kigali Amendment and Japan’s revised Fluorinated Gas law. This has prompted the exploration of novel refrigerants as well as their mixtures to create high performance environmentally friendly alternatives. These refrigerants can be integrated into existing systems as ‘drop in’ refrigerants, which provide a simpler and low cost substitution process to replace environmentally harmful refrigerants such as R410a. R410a is currently a widely used refrigerant in air conditioning systems, but is to be phased out of use under the Kigali Amendment by the late 2040s. Thus to compare the suitability of replacing this refrigerant with environmentally friendly ‘drop in’ alternatives, a preliminary baseline investigation on a mechanical vapor compression chiller with R410a is conducted via performance and exergy indicators. The testing procedure utilized Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Standard 551/591 which revealed an optimum charge amount of 0.70 kg with a peak performance near 88% of full capacity. The heat exchanger overall heat transfer coefficients showed varying trends, whilst the exergy destruction was as expected highest for the compressor.

    © 2020 The vapor–liquid equilibrium properties of R32/R1123 binary refrigerant mixtures were precisely determined. Such mixtures have the potential to provide a reduced global warming potential although data regarding their properties is extremely limited, especially with regard to vapor–liquid equilibrium characteristics such as boiling point and dew point pressures, for which no actual experimental data exist. The present study acquired such data by means of two recirculation type apparatuses located at different universities. One apparatus, which was used to measure data in high temperature region, is installed at Toyama Prefectural University and includes an optical cell and two circulation loops with a thermostatted liquid bath. After thermal equilibration, a part of the sample in both loops is sandwiched between two valves and mixed with helium, following which the compositions are determined using gas chromatograpy. The other apparatus, which was for lower temperature region, at Kyushu University, has a similar design. The vapor–liquid equilibrium data were obtained between 300 and 330 K using the apparatus for high temperatures and from 273 to 313 K using the apparatus for low temperatures. These data were compared with predictions from the Helmholtz-type equation of state and a systematic deviation of approximately 1&#37; was observed at low temperatures. A regression analysis using the binary interaction parameter kij for the modified Peng–Robinson equation of state more accurately reproduced the present measurement results.

    The surface tension was measured for several low GWP refrigerants, which are grouped in HCFO and HFO, by a differential capillary rise method. The comparison between measured data and calculated value by REFPROP 10.0 were reviewed. The review results suggest that the uncertainty in surface tension calculated by REFROP 10.0 are not negligibly small for R1224yd(Z) and R1336mzz(Z). Based on the measured data and calculated orthobaric densities, "Parachor" was identified for each refrigerant. Among the measured refrigerants, the parachor of only R1336mzz(E) showed obvious temperature dependence, which means there could be an inconsistency between orthobaric densities and surface tension.

    Measurements of PρTx properties for five compositions of the binary R 245fa + R 134a mixture were made by the isochoric method<tt>.</tt> With respect to 90.00 mass%, 70.00 mass%, 50.00 mass%, 30.00 mass%, and 20.00 mass% R 245fa mixtures, 134, 125, 119, 122, and 43 PρTx data were obtained in the temperature range from 310 K to 430 K, and pressure up to 6.94 MPa, respectively. The vapor-liquid equilibrium data were determined with an aid of the break point along the isochores. The critical pressure for five compositions were measured and the correlation of the critical locus for the R 245fa + R 134a mixture was also formulated.

    Measurements of the vapor-liquid coexistence curve near the critical point for five compositions of the binary R 245fa + R 134a mixture were made by the direct observation of meniscus<tt>.</tt> With respect to 90.00 mass%, 70.00 mass%, 50.00 mass%, 30.00 mass%, and 20.00 mass% R 245fa mixtures, 16, 14, 14, 11, and 13 saturated density data were obtained<tt>,</tt>respectively. The critical parameters for five compositions were determined by the disappearing meniscus level as well as the intensity of critical opalescence. In addition, the correlation of the critical locus for the R 245fa + R 134a mixture was proposed.

    The 5 pair layered FeSi2 thermoelectric conversion module was manufactured by sintering five layers of p type and n type powder at the same time, using SPS (spark plasma sintering) method. This process is expected to have higher reliability and shorter manufacturing time compared with conventional process which is performed by joining machined p type and n type element with the electrode. Maximum power of 32.4 mW was provided by this module under the condition of heating temperature 773 K and cooling temperature 293 K. The changes of the module shape and sintering condition greatly changed the performance of this module. By the optimization of the sintering condition and the shape, the performance of this process can be expected to be higher. To obtain the high performance it is necessary to develop the module shape which has large temperature difference with low electric resistance and sintering condition which enable low thermal conductivity with high density.

    To achieve high performance of thermoelectric conversion module, it is important that the contact electric resistance between thermoelectric element and electrode is decreased. The manufacturing method to perform sintering of FeSi2 powder and joining of the sintered body with Ag metal plates at the same time was examined by using SPS(spark plasma sintering) method. The Ag plates were successfully joined to FeSi2 element by this process. In addition, it was able to lower the resistance of thermoelectric conversion module because the contact electric resistance between the FeSi2 element and the Cu electrode was decreased by joining Ag plates. The thermoelectric conversion modules with various element heights were produced by this process, and the performance of the modules was evaluated under several temperature differences. The most suitable thermoelectric module height, 5 mm, was decided by investigating relations of the module height and the performance. The FeSi2 thermoelectric conversion module consisting of 50 pairs of p-n elements was produced using an element with 5 mm height, and the performance was measured. As a result, the maximum electric power of FeSi2 thermoelectric conversion module of 50 pairs was 1.70 W in the condition of heating temperature at 873 K and/or cooling temperature at 293 K.

After the calibration of pressure sensor and the determination of the inner volume of sample vessel, the reproducibility of the experimental apparatus was confirmed by the measurement of isochores for pure HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane). The </tt><tt>PρTx </tt><tt>properties of the 50 mass&#37; HFO-1234ze(E) (trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) + 50 mass&#37; HFC-32 (difluoromethane) mixtures and those of the 75 mass&#37; HFO-1234ze(E) + 25 mass&#37; HFC-32 mixtures were measured for five isochores including 128 </tt><tt>PρTx </tt><tt>property data points and for seven isochores including 188 </tt><tt>PρTx </tt><tt>property data points, respectively. The critical pressures were determined from the present isochores close to the critical density against the critical temperature. The relationship between pressure and temperature at vapor-liquid equilibrium was graphically determined from thepresentisochores</tt><tt>. </tt>

    <tt>Measurements of the density and isobaric specific heat capacity for HFO-1234ze(E) (trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene)+HFC-32 mixtures were carried out using a metal-bellows calorimeter. Seventy-one densities and thirty-eight isobaric specific heat capacities were obtained in the range of temperatures from 310 to 350 K, pressures from 1.4 to 5.0 MPa, and densities from 724 to 1083 kg</tt>‧<tt>m</tt><tt>-3</tt><tt>. The experimental uncertainties are estimated to be ±10 mK in temperature, ±2 kPa in pressure, ±0.001 mol</tt>‧<tt>mol</tt><tt>-1 </tt><tt>in composition, ±0.2 % in density, ±5 % in isobaric specific heat capacity. On the basis of the present data, the bubble point pressure, the saturated liquid density, and the isobaric specific heat capacity of saturated liquid were also determined. The experimental results were compared with the values calculated from REFPROP</tt><tt>. </tt>

    A comprehensive review is presented for the study on the thermodynamic properties of R 1234yf (2,3,3,3- tetrafluoropropene) and R 1234ze(E) (trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene), which are considered as a possible replacement for conventional refrigerants with far from negligible global warming potential. Available experimental data for the critical parameters, vapor pressures, liquid/vapor densities, heat capacities, and speeds of sound are compiled, and reliability of each data is evaluated. A brief summary is also given for equations of state developed for these refrigerants, including comparison of deviations from experimental values and valid ranges of each equation of state. Recommended equations are selected which can be applied to refrigeration system analysis.

    The vapor pressures and pρT properties for trans-1,3,3,3- tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234ze(E)) are measured using a metal-bellows cell. As for the vapor pressure, eight data points are obtained in the temperature range from (310 to 380) K and pressure range from (703 to 3458) kPa. The data of the vapor pressure is correlated by the Wagner type equation with the absolute average deviation of 0.02 &#37;. By extrapolating the vapor-pressure correlation to the critical temperature, the critical pressure is determined to be 3632 kPa. The acentric factor is also determined to be 0.296 by using the vapor-pressure correlation. As for the pρT properties, 26 data points are obtained in the temperature range from (310 to 370) K and pressure range from (2000 to 5000) kPa. The data of the pρT properties are correlated by the Sato equation with the absolute average deviation of 0.04 &#37;. Seven data points of the saturated liquid density are obtained by extrapolating the correlation of the pρT properties to the vapor pressure. © 2010 American Chemical Society.

    Measurements of the surface tension for two kinds of CFC alternatives, i.e., HCFC-123 (2,2-dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane), and HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane), have been made by the differential capillary rise method (DCRM) and the vertical plate method (VPM). For HCFC-123, 15 data have been obtained by DCRM in the temperature range between 273 and 333 K within the uncertainty of ±0.1mN/m, and 21 data have been obtained by VPM in the temperature range between 273 and 290 K within the uncertainty of ±0.2mN/m. For HFC-134a, 17 data have been obtained by DCRM in the temperature range between 276 and 329 K within the uncertainty of ±0.1mN/m. The uncertainty of temperature measurement by DCRM is estimated within ±20mK, whereas that by VPM within ±30mK. New correlations of the surface tension for HCFC-123 and HFC-134a have been also proposed.

    MEASUREMENT OF VAPOR PRESSURE, VAPOR-LIQUID COEXISTENCE CURVE AND CRITICAL PARAMETERS OF REFRIGERANT 152a.
    Forty-four vapor pressures of Refrigerant 152a (CH//3CHF//2: 1,1-difluoroethane) between 273 K and 386 K have been measured in the range of pressures from 0. 26 MPa to 4. 48 MPa. Ten saturated liquid densities and eleven saturated vapor densities near the critical point have also been measured in the range of temperatures from 370 K to the critical temperature which corresponds to a density variation of 153 kg multiplied by (times) m** minus **3 to 635 kg multiplied by (times) m** minus **3. The experimental uncertainties of temperature, pressure and density measurements have been estimated within 10 mK, 0. 8 kPa and 0. 55&#37;, respectively. On the basis of these results, the critical temperature, critical pressure and critical density of R 152a have been determined to be 386. 44 K, 4. 519 8 MPa and 368 kg multiplied by (times) m** minus 3, respectively, in consideration of the meniscus disappearing level as well as the intensity of the critical opalescence.
