The target of the Hyodo group is to develop ceramic materials that conduct hydrogen ions and electrons and to realize proton-conductive ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) that can operate in the medium temperature range of 200-400 °C. In order to realize a carbon-neutral society by 2050, fuel cells that can extract electrical energy from hydrogen without emitting CO2 are attracting attention. Fuel cells that can extract electrical energy from hydrogen without emitting CO2 are attracting attention. However, as the fuel cells currently in practical use are expensive, there is an urgent need to reduce material and maintenance costs through medium-temperature operation and to widely spread inexpensive fuel cells in society. To meet this demand, the Hyodo Group is developing new solid electrolyte and electrode materials that enable operation at 200-400°C and high-performance fuel cell devices using these materials. In these developments, the Hyodo Group aims to develop these materials in a rational and efficient manner, taking the basic knowledge gained from electrochemical measurements and advanced analytical methods using X-rays, electron beams, infrared rays, and ion beams, and applying it to applications.

    Liquid ammonia is an attractive candidate for use as a hydrogen carrier because of its high volumetric density. The successful development of direct ammonia proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) operating at intermediate temperatures can be seamlessly integrated into the current infrastructure without the need for investing in hydrogen gas pipelines and storage facilities. However, the low power output of PCFCs using ammonia fuel hinders their practical applications. In this study, we systematically investigated the ammonia conversion ratio and rate, maximum power density, open-circuit voltage, and ohmic and polarization resistances of PCFCs (Ni-BaCe0.7Zr0.1Y0.1Yb0.1O3−δ |BaCe0.7Zr0.1Y0.1Yb0.1O3−δ| PrBaCo2O5+δ) for ammonia and hydrogen fuels at intermediate temperatures of 500–650 °C and quantitatively assessed the impact of Ru catalyst loading on the electrochemical performance of direct ammonia PCFC. Ru loading improved the maximum power density of the direct ammonia PCFC from 100 to 149 mWcm−2 at 500 °C. Combined analysis of gas chromatography and AC impedance spectroscopy revealed that Ru catalysts improved the internal ammonia reforming rate by a factor of 1.9 at 500 °C and reduced polarization resistance by a factor of 1.4 at 500 °C. All results consistently support that the enhanced maximum power density of the direct ammonia PCFC is predominantly attributed to the improved electrochemical reaction kinetics at the electrode/electrolyte/gas interface.

    Water, being abundant and readily accessible, gains widespread usage as proton source in many catalysis and energy conversion technologies, including applications like reversible protonic ceramic cells (R-PCCs). Revealing the influence of water on the electrode surface and reaction kinetics is critical for further improving their electrochemical performance. Herein, a hydrophilic air-electrode PrBa0.875Cs0.125Co2O5+δ is developed for R-PCC, which demonstrates a remarkable peak power density of 1058 mW cm−2 in fuel cell mode and a current density of 1354 mA cm−2 under 1.3 V in electrolyzing steam at 650 °C. For the first time on R-PCC, surface protons' behavior in response to external voltages is captured using in situ FTIR characterizations. Further, it is shown that contrary to the bulk proton uptake process that is thought to follow hydrogenation reactions and lead to cation reductions. The air-electrode presents enriched surface protons occurring through oxidizing surface cations, as confirmed by depth-profiling XPS results. H/D isotope exchange experiments and subsequent electrochemical characterization analyses reveal that the presence of protons enhances surface reactions. This study fills the knowledge gap between water-containing atmospheres and electrochemical performance by providing insights into the surface properties of the material. These new findings provide guidance for future electrode design and optimization.
