[研究活動概要] 「ヒトとは何か?」これは人類共通の疑問であり、科学に限らず幅広い学問分野において重要な問いである。そして、ヒトをヒトたらしめている分子基盤(ヒト化の分子基盤)の解明は、この問いに答える一助となると考えられる。  シアル酸は細胞表面糖鎖の末端に位置する酸性の糖であり、免疫や神経活動などにおいて重要な役割をはたしている。そのシアル酸に関わる分子には、シアル酸を含有する糖鎖の多様化に関わる酵素や、シアル酸と結合し細胞内シグナル伝達をおこなう受容体が含まれる。これらの分子の多くにヒト特異的な変化を見つけてきており、それらはヒトの進化に関わり、ヒト化の分子基盤の1つと期待される。そこで、それらヒト特異的な変化のヒトの進化での役割を知るため、それらと病気との関係に注目し、進化医学的な視点から研究をおこなっている。
