【Research】 Study of nuclear reaction using heavy-ion beams I study nuclear physics based on the reaction using heavy-ion beams. The experiments are performed mainly at the RIKEN RI beam factory (Saitama, Japan) and QST HIMAC (Chiba, Japan). The main work is to elucidate the nuclear structures of exotic unstable nuclei by extracting the radius of the atomic nucleus via reaction-probability measurements. 【Education】 Working on KIKAN education (Basic Laboratory Experiments: Physics field)

    The quasielastic barrier distribution of V-51+ Cm-248 was extracted by measuring the excitation function of quasielastic backscattering using a gas-filled recoil ion separator, GARIS-III. The obtained barrier distribution is well explained by the coupled-channels calculation, indicating a significant effect of the rotational excitation of deformed Cm-248. From the measured average Coulomb barrier height and deformation parameters of Cm-248, the side-collision energy leading to a compact configuration of colliding nuclei was obtained. The relation between the side collision energy and the excitation function of the evaporation-residue cross sections in the Ca-48+(CM)-C-248 system was evaluated as a reference for the V-51+ Cm-248 case. The optimal reaction energy to synthesize a new element 119 at the V-51+ Cm-248 fusion reaction (3n and 4n channels) was estimated with an aid of these experimental data.

    Charge-changing cross sections σCC for Ca42-51 on a carbon target at around 280 MeV/nucleon have been measured. Though the existing point-proton radii rp of Ca isotopes increase as the neutron number increases, the measured σCC data show a significant decrease, which is against the expectation from a simple Glauber-like model. We found that this observed phenomenon could be attributed to the charged-particle evaporation effect induced by the neutron-removal reaction. By taking the evaporation effect into account, various σCC data sets for nuclides from C to Fe isotopes on C12 measured at around 280 MeV/nucleon are reproduced with a standard deviation of 1.6%. It is also clarified that this evaporation effect becomes negligibly small in the neutron-rich region. The evaluated relation between σCC and rp using the current model indicates that σCC data for neutron-rich Ca isotopes (A≥51) are highly sensitive to rp. This high sensitivity potentially allows one to determine the rp of very neutron-rich nuclei.

    © 2020 American Physical Society. Interaction cross sections for Ca42-51 on a carbon target at 280 MeV/nucleon have been measured for the first time. The neutron number dependence of derived root-mean-square matter radii shows a significant increase beyond the neutron magic number N=28. Furthermore, this enhancement of matter radii is much larger than that of the previously measured charge radii, indicating a novel growth in neutron skin thickness. A simple examination based on the Fermi-type distribution, and mean field calculations point out that this anomalous enhancement of the nuclear size beyond N=28 results from an enlargement of the core by a sudden increase in the surface diffuseness of the neutron density distribution, which implies the swelling of the bare Ca48 core in Ca isotopes beyond N=28.

    We have measured reaction cross sections (σ13;14;15B on Be, C, Al, and proton targets. In addition to the conventional method of deducing nucleon density distributions based on the Glauber-type calculation, the recently developed method for deducing point-proton and neutron density distributions separately from σoton targets were utilized for these nuclei. The result suggests the necessity for 14B of a large tail in its neutron density distribution, which can be referred to as a one-neutron halo. Rootmean- square point-proton, neutron and matter radii for 13;14;15B were also derived. From present systematic studies for 13;14;15B, a large enhancement of matter and neutron radii in 14B was found for the first time.

    The neutron-rich unbound fluorine isotope F2130 has been observed for the first time by measuring its neutron decay at the SAMURAI spectrometer (RIBF, RIKEN) in the quasifree proton knockout reaction of Ne31 nuclei at 235  MeV/nucleon. The mass and thus one-neutron-separation energy of F30 has been determined to be Sn=−472±58(stat)±33(sys)  keV from the measurement of its invariant-mass spectrum. The absence of a sharp drop in Sn(F30) shows that the “magic” N=20 shell gap is not restored close to O28, which is in agreement with our shell-model calculations that predict a near degeneracy between the neutron d and fp orbitals, with the 1p3/2 and 1p1/2 orbitals becoming more bound than the 0f7/2 one. This degeneracy and reordering of orbitals has two potential consequences: O28 behaves like a strongly superfluid nucleus with neutron pairs scattering across shells, and both F29,31 appear to be good two-neutron halo-nucleus candidates.

    The charge-changing cross sections σcc of 10-13B, 11-13C, and 12,13N nuclides on multiple targets were measured at the energy of about 170 MeV/nucleon. The point-proton radii of these nuclides were determined by comparing the experimental σcc with the Glauber model calculation considering the charged-particle evaporation effect. For 12,13B, the present results are consistent with the existing experimental data deduced by different methods.

    Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) using β-decay radioisotopes, known as “β-NMR,” is used for research in nuclear physics. Recently, nuclear magnetic moments of β-decay radioisotopes have been precisely measured by β-NMR. Therefore, β-decay radioisotopes can be used for NMR spectroscopy in material sciences. Nuclei, whose spin is zero, such as 12C and 16O, cannot be used in conventional NMR. However, nonzero-spin radioactive isotopes of carbon and oxygen can be used in β-NMR. This advantage is powerful for investigating organic materials that cannot be investigated using conventional NMR. A technique is being developed to extend β-NMR for imaging use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this study, the imaging function was realized by installing β-ray tracking detectors in a β-NMR device. Nuclear-spin-polarized radioisotopes were injected into a sample, and β-rays were emitted from their positions. Consequently, one could track back β-ray source positions on the sample. These detectors were installed into a dipole magnet to observe the magnetic resonances. A radio frequency coil was installed surrounding the sample. By combining information about the β-ray tracks and magnetic resonances, it was possible to obtain NMR spectra and images. This method is called “β-MRI.” The system was evaluated, and its performances were estimated.

    Charge-changing cross sections σcc for mirror nuclei pair, 22Ne and 22Mg, on carbon and proton targets were measured at 120 MeV/nucleon. The experimental σccexp. were compared with Glauber-type calculations using the known density distribution of the target and the proton distribution of the projectile. Moreover, assuming the perfect charge symmetry, the proton distribution radius of 22Mg was deduced and compared with that from the isotope shift. We examined the possibility of the charge-changing cross section for mirror nuclei as a new method to determine the neutron skin thickness.

    The muon spin rotation/relaxation/resonance (μSR) spectroscopy is widely used as a unique tool for probing magnetic properties in materials. We aim to enhance this method by incorporating imaging functionality. In this study, we conducted an experiment using a new imaging device that utilizes positron tracking from muon decays to assess the reliability of positron tracking and its positional resolution. As a result, we have demonstrated that an image depicting a hole with a diameter of 5 mm could be reconstructed.

    Detailed γ-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope 28Ne has been performed for the first time using the one-neutron removal reaction from 29Ne on a liquid hydrogen target at 240 MeV/nucleon. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for 28Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N=20 and N=28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

    Subjecting a physical system to extreme conditions is one of the means often used to obtain a better understanding and deeper insight into its organization and structure. In the case of the atomic nucleus, one such approach is to investigate isotopes that have very different neutron-to-proton (N/Z) ratios than in stable nuclei. Light, neutron-rich isotopes exhibit the most asymmetric N/Z ratios and those lying beyond the limits of binding, which undergo spontaneous neutron emission and exist only as very short-lived resonances (about 10−21s), provide the most stringent tests of modern nuclear-structure theories. Here we report on the first observation of 28O and 27O through their decay into 24O and four and three neutrons, respectively. The 28O nucleus is of particular interest as, with the Z = 8 and N = 20 magic numbers1,2, it is expected in the standard shell-model picture of nuclear structure to be one of a relatively small number of so-called ‘doubly magic’ nuclei. Both 27O and 28O were found to exist as narrow, low-lying resonances and their decay energies are compared here to the results of sophisticated theoretical modelling, including a large-scale shell-model calculation and a newly developed statistical approach. In both cases, the underlying nuclear interactions were derived from effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics. Finally, it is shown that the cross-section for the production of 28O from a 29F beam is consistent with it not exhibiting a closed N = 20 shell structure.

    It is well known that the enhancement of halo neutron removal cross sections in neutron halo nuclei. This is one of the evidence for the neutron halo structure. Because the valence neutron of the isomeric state in 16N is considered to be mainly occupying in the s-orbital, we studied the nuclear structure of 16N as a candidate for neutron halo nucleus. In this study, we measured one-neutron removal cross sections σ-1n using secondary beams of 16N with a mixture of ground and isomeric states. We used two types of primary beams, 15N and 18O, to produce 16N beams with different isomeric ratios (8.7, 24.2a 16N beam with a large isomeric ratio is large compared to that obtained with another beam with a small isomeric state. This result suggests that the 16N isomeric state is considered to have a neutron-halo-like structure.

    The nucleus Ne29 is situated at the border of the island of inversion. Despite significant efforts, no bound low-lying intruder f7/2 state, which would place Ne29 firmly inside the island of inversion, has yet been observed. Here, the first investigation of unbound states of Ne29 is reported. The states were populated in Ne30(p,pn) and Na30(p,2p) reactions at a beam energy of around 230 MeV/nucleon, and analyzed in terms of their resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions. The momentum distributions are compared to calculations using the eikonal, direct reaction model, allowing ℓ assignments for the observed states. The lowest-lying resonance at an excitation energy of 1.48(4) MeV shows clear signs of a significant ℓ=3 component, giving first evidence for f7/2 single particle strength in Ne29. The excitation energies and strengths of the observed states are compared to shell-model calculations using the sdpf-u-mix interaction.

Double-differential thick target neutron yields from the bombardment of LiF, C, Si, Ni, Mo, and Ta targets by 6.7 MeV/u deuterons were measured at forward angles using an EJ-301 liquid organic scintillator. The neutron energy spectra were derived via an unfolding method using the FORIST code with the detector response function calculated using the SCINFUL-QMD code. The neutron energy spectra and total neutron yields at 0∘ from the deuteron incidences were compared with the previous data of triton incidences on LiF, Si, Ni, Mo, and Ta targets measured at the same incident energy per nucleon. The comparison revealed that deuterons yield more neutrons for low-Z targets than tritons, and less neutrons for high-Z targets. The measured neutron energy spectra were compared with model calculations using the DEUteron-induced Reaction Analysis Code System (DEURACS). DEURACS successfully reproduced the neutron spectra from all the targets. For the triton incidence, some calculation codes were benchmarked, with JQMD/GEM and CCONE yielding good agreement with the measured neutron spectra at 0∘.

The measured (d, xn) spectra were compared with the (t, xn) spectra measured by the other group at the same incident energy per nucleon (6.7 MeV/u) and theoretical model calculations by Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) and DEUteron-induced Reaction Analysis Code System (DEURACS). Some bumps are observed in the (d, xn) spectra for low-Z target elements, while no specific structure was seen in the (t, xn) spectra. The PHITS calculation, in which the intra-nuclear cascade of Liége (INCL) and generalized evaporation model (GEM) were used, generally overestimates neutron spectra while the DEURACS calculation agrees with experimental ones fairly well.

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-unbound nucleus F28 has been performed for the first time following proton/neutron removal from Ne29/F29 beams at energies around 230 MeV/nucleon. The invariant-mass spectra were reconstructed for both the F(∗)27+n and F(∗)26+2n coincidences and revealed a series of well-defined resonances. A near-threshold state was observed in both reactions and is identified as the F28 ground state, with Sn(F28)=-199(6) keV, while analysis of the 2n decay channel allowed a considerably improved Sn(F27)=1620(60) keV to be deduced. Comparison with shell-model predictions and eikonal-model reaction calculations have allowed spin-parity assignments to be proposed for some of the lower-lying levels of F28. Importantly, in the case of the ground state, the reconstructed F27+n momentum distribution following neutron removal from F29 indicates that it arises mainly from the 1p3/2 neutron intruder configuration. This demonstrates that the island of inversion around N=20 includes F28, and most probably F29, and suggests that O28 is not doubly magic.

    We first predict the ground-state properties of Ca isotopes using the Gogny-D1S Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov with and without the angular momentum projection. We find that Ca-64 is an even-dripline nucleus and Ca-59 is an odd-dripline nucleus, using A dependence of the one-neutron separation energy S-1 and the two-neutron separation energy, S-2. As for S-1, S-2 and the binding energies EB, our results agree with the experimental data in Ca40-58. As other ground-state properties of Ca-40-60,Ca-62,Ca-64, we predict charge, proton, neutron, matter radii, neutron skin, and deformation. As for charge radii, our results are consistent with the experimental data in Ca40-52. For Ca-48, our results on proton, neutron, matter radii agree with the experimental data. Recently, Tanaka et al. measured interaction cross sections for Ca42-51 scattering on a C-12 target at an incident energy per nucleon of E-lab = 280 MeV. Second, we predict reaction cross sections sigma(R) for Ca-40-60,Ca-62,Ca-64 using a chiral g-matrix double-folding model (DFM). To show the reliability of the present DFM for sigma(R), we apply the DFM for the data on C-12 scattering on Be-9, C-12, Al-27 targets in 30 less than or similar to E-lab less than or similar to 400 MeV and show that the present DFM is good in 30 less than or similar to E-lab less than or similar to 100 MeV and 250 less than or similar to E-lab less than or similar to 400 MeV. For 110 less than or similar to E-lab less than or similar to 240 MeV, our results have small errors. To improve the present DFM for sigma(R), we propose two prescriptions.

    © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. The β-ray detected nuclear magnetic resonance (β-NMR) of a short lived-nucleus 17N (I = 1/2, T1/2 = 4.173 s) in liquid H2O and CH3NO2 has been performed. A π-pulse method was applied to obtain sharp NMR lines, from which the ratio of the Larmor frequencies of 17N in CH3NO2 and 1H was determined to be ν[17N in CH3NO2]/ν[1H2O] = 0.1265751 ± 0.0000019. Two resonance lines were observed for 17N in H2O with the relative frequency shifts of –(2.33 ± 0.37) × 10−4 and (2.91 ± 0.27) × 10−4 referenced to 17N in CH3NO2.

The beta decay of the Tz=-2 nucleus 64Se has been studied in a fragmentation reaction at RIKEN-Nishina Center. 64Se is the heavies Tz=-2 nucleus that decays to bound states in the daughter nucleus and the heaviest case where the mirror reaction 64Zn(3He,t)64Ga on the Tz=+2 64Zn stable target exists and can be compared. Beta-delayed gamma and proton radiation is reported for the 64Se and 64As cases. New levels have been observed in 64As, 64Ge (N=Z), 63Ge and 63Ga. The associated T1/2 values have been obtained.

    © 2019 Elsevier B.V. RI-RICH, a ring-imaging Cherenkov counter for radioactive ions, has been developed to measure the velocity of the ions at intermediate energies. Our RI-RICH system consists of six multi-anode photomultiplier tubes covered with 360-nm bandpass filters and a radiator made of quartz or BK7. For the primary 132 Xe beam with a velocity of β=0.712, a velocity resolution of Δβ∕β=4.9×10 −4 (one standard deviation σ) and a detection efficiency of more than 99.99&#37; were achieved. For the secondary beams with Z=44–55 and β≃0.70, we successfully performed particle identification using the Bρ-ΔE-β method. The velocity resolutions of RI-RICH for these nuclides were equivalent to a more than 6σ separation for the mass number.

Since its discovery in 2002, the known emitters have been 19 Mg, 45 Fe, 48 Ni, 54 Zn and 67 Kr. 67 Kr was observed for the first time at the RIKEN Nishina Center in 2015. Its decay energy was measured at 1690(17) keV with a branching ratio of 37(14)&#37;. The half-life, 7.4(30) ms, was found in contradiction with theoretical calculations, pointing out effects of decay dynamics and nuclear deformation.

The beta-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (β-NMR) in liquid H2O has been observed for the first time using a short-lived β-ray emitter 12N (Iπ = 1+,T1/2=11 ms). A nuclear spin polarized 12N beam with an energy of about 20 MeV/nucleon was implanted into an enclosed water sample. About 50 &#37; of implanted 12N ions maintained nuclear polarization and exhibited a β-NMR spectrum. The chemical shift of 12N in H2O relative to 12N in Pt was deduced to be −(3.6±0.5) × 102 ppm.

The β decay of the odd-odd nucleus Br70 has been investigated with the BigRIPS and EURICA setups at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory (RIBF) of the RIKEN Nishina Center. The T=0(Jπ=9+) and T=1(Jπ=0+) isomers have both been produced in in-flight fragmentation of Kr78 with ratios of 41.6(8)&#37; and 58.4(8)&#37;, respectively. A half-life of t1/2=2157-49+53 ms has been measured for the Jπ=9+ isomer from γ-ray time decay analysis. Based on this result, we provide a new value of the half-life for the Jπ=0+ ground state of Br70,t1/2=78.42±0.51 ms, which is slightly more precise, and in excellent agreement, with the best measurement reported hitherto in the literature. For this decay, we provide the first estimate of the total branching fraction decaying through the 21+ state in the daughter nucleus Se70,R(21+)=1.3±1.1&#37;. We also report four new low-intensity γ-ray transitions at 661, 1103, 1561, and 1749 keV following the β decay of the Jπ=9+ isomer. Based on their coincidence relationships, we tentatively propose two new excited states at 3945 and 4752 keV in Se70 with most probable spins and parities of Jπ=(6+) and (8+), respectively. The observed structure is interpreted with the help of shell-model calculations, which predict a complex interplay between oblate and prolate configurations at low excitation energies.

    We have developed a high time resolution time-of-flight (TOF) detector that detects the Cherenkov light emitted when an RI beam passes through a high refractive index glass. 58Ni and 132Xe beams of energies of 200A- 500AMeV and secondary beams produced with those beams have been used for the test of the Cherenkov detectors. The time resolution of σ = 5 ps with the inclusion of system resolution has been achieved with a 420AMeV 132Xe beam.

    Reaction cross sections for 15;16C on nuclear targets (Be, C, Al) and proton target are systematically measured in the intermediate energy range. Nucleon density distributions of 15;16C were deduced from the analyses of present data with existing experimental data using the Glauber-type calculation. Proton and neutron density distributions were also deduced separately from proton target data. Results of root-mean-square radii show a good agreement with theoretical calculations for both isotopes.

    © 2016 American Physical Society. In an experiment with the BigRIPS separator at the RIKEN Nishina Center, we observed two-proton (2p) emission from Kr67. At the same time, no evidence for 2p emission of Ge59 and Se63, two other potential candidates for this exotic radioactivity, could be observed. This observation is in line with Q value predictions which pointed to Kr67 as being the best new candidate among the three for two-proton radioactivity. Kr67 is only the fourth 2p ground-state emitter to be observed with a half-life of the order of a few milliseconds. The decay energy was determined to be 1690(17) keV, the 2p emission branching ratio is 37(14)&#37;, and the half-life of Kr67 is 7.4(30) ms.

In an experiment with the RIKEN projectile fragment separator called BigRIPS at the RIKEN Nishina Center, the fragmentation of a Kr78 beam allowed the observation of new neutron-deficient isotopes at the proton drip line. Clean identification spectra could be produced and Se63,Kr67, and Kr68 were identified for the first time. In addition, Ge59 was also observed. Three of these isotopes, Ge59,Se63, and Kr67, are potential candidates for ground-state two-proton radioactivity. In addition, the isotopes Ge58,Se62, and Kr66 were also sought but without success. The present experiment also allowed the determination of production cross sections for some of the most exotic isotopes. These measurements confirm the trend already observed that the empirical parametrization of fragmentation cross sections, EPAX, significantly overestimates experimental cross sections in this mass region.

    © 2014 American Physical Society. Precise reaction cross sections (σR) for Mg24-38 on C targets at energies around 240 MeV/nucleon have been measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. The σR for Mg36-38 have been measured for the first time. An enhancement of σR compared to the systematics for spherical stable nuclei has been observed, especially in the neutron-rich region, which reflects the deformation of those isotopes. In the vicinity of the drip line the σR for Mg37 is especially large. It is shown by analysis using a recently developed theoretical method that this prominent enhancement of σR for Mg37 should come from the p-orbital halo formation breaking the N=28 shell gap.

    An isomeric state in the proton drip-line nucleus 26P has been observed by the γ-ray spectroscopy. The γ-ray energy and the half-life are 164.4 ± 0.1 keV and 120 ± 9 ns, respectively. For the isomeric transition of the mirror nucleus 26Na, the γ-ray energy of 82.40 ± 0.04 keV and the half-life of 4.35 ± 0.16 μs are also revised. Comparing the experimental reduced transition probabilities of 26Na and 26P with theoretical ones calculated by the shell model with the USDA interaction, the spin-parity (Jπ) of the isomeric state in 26P is most likely to be 1+. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2014.

    Reaction cross sections (σR) for the neutron-rich nucleus 14B on Be, C, and Al targets have been measured at several energies in the intermediate energy range of 45-120 MeV/nucleon. The present experimental σR show a significant enhancement relative to the systematics of stable nuclei. The nucleon density distribution was deduced through the fitting procedure with the modified Glauber calculation. The necessity of a long tail in the density distribution was found, which is consistent with the valence neutron in 2s1/2 orbital with the small empirical one-neutron separation energy in 14B. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2014.

    Total reaction, interaction, and charge-changing cross sections, which are kinds of cross sections standing for total nuclear collision probability in medium-to high-energy region from a few to several hundred MeV, have been extensively utilized to probe nuclear sizes especially for unstable nuclei. In this mini review, experimental techniques and recent findings from these cross sections are briefly overviewed. Additionally, two new methods to extract neutron skin thickness solely from the above cross sections are explained: One is utilizing the energy and isospin dependence of the total reaction cross sections, and the other is the combination of the total reaction and charge-changing cross section measurements.

    未発見原子核の多くは質量数が大きい中性子過剰領域に位置し、これらの有望な生成手法の一つ に中性子過剰不安定核の核融合反応がある。しかし、中性子過剰不安定核が持つ特徴的な核表面構造(ハロー・スキン)が原因で、その反応機構がよく分かっていない。本研究では「融合反応機構を鋭敏に反映するクーロン障壁分布を不安定核に対して世界初測定」すると同時に「融合反応と強く競合しうる中性子移行・分解反応も測定」することで、中性子過剰不安定核の融合反応機構に迫る。本研究で低収量不安定核ビームに対する画期的測定法を確立させ、まずはハロー核の中でも構造が単純な15C, 6Heを対象とした測定を実施する。
