Profile
"Geophysical exploration" is a technique that visualizes (images) the underground conditions—which cannot be directly seen with our eyes—by using various physical phenomena such as seismic waves, electromagnetic fields, magnetism, and gravity. Based on data acquired by various sensors on the ground, in the air, or in the sea, it images the subsurface and then we understand the subsurface features by integrating relevant scientific knowledge and information. Geophysical exploration has evolved as a surveying technology for underground resources such as petroleum, natural gas, geothermal energy, and mineral resources. Today, it is also widely applied in fields such as infrastructure development and maintenance (e.g., tunnels and river embankments), underground environmental utilization (e.g., geological disposal of radioactive waste and CO₂ sequestration), environmental conservation (e.g., understanding groundwater distribution), and disaster prevention (e.g., investigations of faults and volcanic activity). In recent years, it has also become possible to monitor dynamic changes such as the movement of subsurface fluids. Toward building a sustainable society, we are addressing various social challenges related to the subsurface and advancing the research and development of geophysical exploration technologies necessary for solving each of these challenges.

Adviser to Graduation (Undergraduate) , Master's and Doctor's Research and Thesis

To improve students' fundamental academic skills in areas such as physical mathematics and to stimulate interest in geophysical exploration technologies, the lecture content related to geophysical exploration will be restructured in collaboration with the responsible faculty members. Specifically, for second-year undergraduate students, the curriculum will include case studies on the application of geophysical exploration techniques, vector analysis, and fundamentals of solid Earth geophysics. For third-year students, the curriculum will focus on individual geophysical exploration methods, Fourier transforms, and numerical modeling techniques.

For graduate students, including those enrolled in the Joint Graduate Program in Resources Engineering, lectures will cover the magnetotelluric (MT) method -one of the most widely used techniques for deep subsurface investigations such as geothermal resource exploration. The course will address the principles of the MT method, as well as data acquisition, processing, analysis, and interpretation.

Regarding supervision of undergraduate and graduate theses, weekly seminars will be held to check progress and provide guidance. In addition, individualized instruction will be given on the development of data analysis techniques for electrical and electromagnetic surveys, with the goal of presenting results at academic conferences. Furthermore, in the seminars, reading sessions of specialized texts on geophysical exploration will be conducted to foster a solid foundation of knowledge.
