    <p>Fine bubbles (FBs; <100 µm) were introduced into bio diesel fuel (BDF) and low-sulfur A heavy oil (LSA) to investigate their effects on combustion and emissions in a high speed diesel engine operating at 2000 rpm under partial load. FB addition led to injection delay due to partial consumption of injection energy by FB compression. However, improved fuel atomization and mixture formation were observed, especially under high-load conditions. As a result, the brake specific fuel consumption decreased by up to 6.3 % for BDF and 5.3 % for LSA, with load-weighted average reductions of 4.2 % and 4.2 %, respectively. Simultaneously, brake specific NOₓ emissions were reduced by maxima of 10.2 % for BDF and 18.1 % for LSA, with load-weighted average reductions of 7.6 % and 9.6 %. Heat release analysis showed a flatter profile for BDF-FB, indicating more complete late-stage combustion, whereas LSA-FB exhibited a sharper peak due to lower viscosity and more uniform FB size. These results suggest that FB application enhances combustion efficiency and reduces emissions, with fuel-specific mechanisms depending on physical properties such as viscosity and oxygen content. FB technology is thus a promising method for improving performance in existing diesel engines.</p>

    In large welded steel structures, there are a lot of free edges cut by plasma arc cut without finishing treatment. In the surface layer of steel plate with plasma arc cut surface, the material is hardened. Therefore, we have to take care of the reduction of fatigue strength due to the local stress concentration and residual stress in the surface layer.<br>In this study, from a view of the present, the fatigue strength in air and in artificial seawater of five types of 490 MPa class high tensile steel plates with plasma arc cut surface were organized and evaluated comparatively. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained :<br>1) The surface layers of the steel plates cut by plasma arc cutting were quenched and hardened (about 500~400 HV 3N).<br>2) For the fatigue strength in air at 1×10<sup>6</sup> cycles, all types of tested steel plates with plasma arc cut surface or gas cut surface had the fatigue strength over about 90% of the steel plates with machined cut surface and it shows that plasma arc cutting and also gas cutting have almost no problem on the fatigue strength in air of these steel plates. <br>3) For some types of steel plates cut by plasma arc cutting, the fatigue strength in artificial seawater decreased obviously.<br>4) Under the conditions in air, the negative effect of plasma arc cutting on the fatigue strength of 490 MPa class high tensile steel plates does not need to be particularly taken into account, while under the corrosion conditions in seawater the sufficient consideration and measures for the fatigue strength of these steel plates are needed.

    When structures and products made with CFRP laminate composite plates get some local damage accidentally then need to be repaired, the scarf repair is done generally.<br>In this study, the influence of the difference in the processes of scarf repair used in the structures of CFRP laminate composites on the tensile and compressive strength of the repaired parts were investigated and discussed. Two processes of scarf repair were used. One (ideal repair) was carried out under a sufficient condition having cleanroom and autoclave, etc. in a repair factory of aircraft maker and other (field repair) was done using some simple instruments in a laboratory expecting a field repair. Two ideal repair models (one of them was given an impact damage to its repair part) and one field repair model were prepared and each repair models were examined by tensile test and compressive test under the condition of room temperature in air, these strengths and fracture modes were discussed comparing among the three kinds of repair models. The following results are obtained.<br>⑴ The field repair model showed lower tensile strength by about 18 % compared with that of the ideal repair model. ⑵ For the ideal repair model with impact damage, in tensile test, its damage starting from local damage part by impact load generates the separation in adhesive layer. Thus, its tensile strength decreases by about 20 % compared with the ideal repair model without impact damage. ⑶ Both of two ideal repair models with/without impact damage and a field repair model showed almost same values in these buckling stress and compressive failure stress. ⑷ In case of that the compressive load acts in practical structure with scarf repair, the design of scarf repair should be considered with the influence of the load due to the out-of-plane deformation, which leads to separation in the adhesive layer.

    We investigated the effective use of cross-flow wind turbines for small-scale wind power generation to increase the output power by using a casing, which is a kind of wind-collecting device, composed of three flow deflector plates having the shape of a circular-arc airfoil. Drag-type vertical-axis wind turbines have an undesirable part of about half of the swept area where the inflow of wind results in low output performance. To solve this problem, we devised a casing consisting of three flow deflector plates, two of which were to block the unwanted inflow of wind and the remaining flow deflector plate having an angle of attack with respect to the wind direction to increase the flow toward the rotor. In this study, output performance experiments using a wind tunnel and numerical fluid analysis were conducted on a cross-flow wind turbine with three flow deflector plates to evaluate the effectiveness of the casing on output performance improvement. As a result, it was confirmed that the casing could improve the output performance of the cross-flow wind turbine by approximately 60% at the maximum performance point and could also maintain the output performance about 50% higher compared to the bare cross-flow wind turbine without the casing within a deviation angle of ±10 degrees, even when the casing direction was inclined against the wind direction due to changes in wind direction.
