Profile
As part of my doctoral project at the Universities of Mainz and Augsburg, which is based at the 'Neuere Deutsche Literaturwissenschaft', I have been conducting an interdisciplinary study of the works of Johann Jakob Wilhelm Heinse (1746–1803) since January 2025. Heinse is a ‘classic beyond the classics’ who has been largely excluded from the canon of German studies (cf. Leonhard Herrmann, 2010). The main objective of this project is, on the one hand, to analyse selected aspects relevant to the history of philology and philosophy with a view to the recent controversy surrounding the ambiguous relationship between aesthetics and ethics and, on the other hand, to critically reflect on the genealogy of the much-invoked topos of the 'autonomy of art' around 1800 (cf. e.g. Jörg Robert, 2024). In doing so, the possibility and limits of Heinse's implicit 'pioneering role' in the intellectual life of his time will be weighed up.
