    Introducing small-sized metal nanoparticles directly into biopolymers susceptible to thermal and chemical stimulations remains a significant challenge. Recently, we showed a novel approach to fabricating gold nanoparticles through pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) using a microchip laser (MCL). Despite its lower pulse energy compared to conventional lasers, this technique demonstrates high ablation efficiency, offering the potential to produce composites without compromising the distinctive structure of biopolymers. As a proof of concept, we successfully generated gelatin-stabilized gold nanoparticles with a smaller size (average diameter of approximately 4 nm), while preserving the unchanged circular dichroism (CD) spectra, indicating the retention of gelatin’s unique structure. Extending this technique to the preparation of type I collagen-stabilized gold nanoparticles yielded non-aggregated nanoparticles, although challenges in yield still persist. These results highlight the potential of the microchip laser ablation technique for producing metal nanoparticles within a vulnerable matrix.

    Abstract

    In this study, niobium oxynitride nanoparticles were examined to determine the effect of particle size on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. To this end, catalyst precursors with niobium oxides dispersed on carbon supports were prepared using the irradiation or impregnation method. Polyacrylonitrile was added to each precursor, followed by heat treatment under an ammonia‐containing atmosphere to synthesize niobium oxynitride nanoparticles. The structures of the prepared catalysts were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The results indicated that two catalysts with the same crystal phase but different particle sizes were obtained. Comparing their ORR activities revealed that the effect of particle size on ORR activity was limited. Thus, it was inferred that controlling the microelectron conduction paths can help maximize the benefits of particle size reduction. In addition, niobium oxynitride nanoparticles with different structures were obtained by varying the heat-treatment temperatures, and the ORR activity of each prepared catalyst was evaluated. These findings suggest that forming graphitized carbon residues with high electrical conductivity and controlling nitrogen-doping in the oxide nanoparticles are crucial steps for enhancing the ORR activity of oxide-based catalysts. These findings offer valuable insights for developing material design strategies to improve oxide-based catalyst performance.

    Abstract

    Zirconium oxide-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte fuel cells were synthesized via heat treatment of zirconium polyacrylate in an NH<sub>3</sub> atmosphere. The effects of gas atmosphere and heat treatment temperature on the material structure were systematically examined. The formation of zirconium oxide nanoparticles and carbon residues, which act as electron conduction paths, was observed in all samples. The structure of the material varied significantly depending on the heat treatment conditions. The samples heat-treated in the NH<sub>3</sub> atmosphere showed greater exposure to zirconium oxide nanoparticles and an increase in the specific surface area of the carbon residue caused by NH<sub>3</sub>-induced etching. In addition, the conductivity of the carbon residue increased, and its quantity decreased with increasing heat treatment temperature. This trade-off was optimally controlled at 800 °C, which resulted in a high rest potential and a large ORR current density. This study demonstrates that the heat treatment of organometallic complexes in an NH<sub>3</sub> atmosphere is highly effective for exposing metal oxide nanoparticles and increasing the specific surface area of the carbon residue, providing valuable insights into the design of electron conduction paths for metal oxide-based catalysts.

    Abstract

    A titanium oxynitride catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte fuel cells was synthesized through the direct ammonia nitridation of titanium complexes. Titanium polyacrylate was employed as the catalyst precursor, and the effect of the calcination temperature between 600 and 1000 °C on the catalyst structure was studied. The catalysts were characterized via X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and powder electrical resistivity measurements. The formation of titanium oxynitride particles and deposited carbon was observed for all the samples; however, significant variations in the catalyst structure and catalytic activity were also observed. With an increase in the calcination temperature, nitridation of titanium oxynitride progressed, and the conductivity of the catalyst powder increased. The highest rest potential and ORR current density were achieved with calcination at 800 °C. Importantly, the results suggest that maintaining an optimal nitrogen doping level within the catalyst particles, along with ensuring the formation of electroconductive deposited carbon, is essential for achieving a high ORR current. This work introduces the direct ammonia nitridation of metal complexes as a promising process for designing metal oxynitride catalysts.

    Abstract

    The development of an effective catalytic system for the dehydrogenative coupling of hydrosilanes with alcohols remains an ongoing challenge, particularly for alcohol protection applications. In this study, we report the development and optimization of a highly efficient gold catalyst supported on fibrillated cellulose modified with citric acid. The catalyst exhibited remarkable catalytic activity under mild conditions with 0.01–0.05 mol% of Au loading, facilitating the formation of silyl ethers with excellent yield. Notably, our catalytic system overcomes the need for excess alcohol, typically required in such reactions, making it highly practical for alcohol protection applications. This work represents a significant advancement in the field of dehydrosilylation catalysis, offering a sustainable, efficient, and environmentally friendly approach for the synthesis of functional silanol-based materials and alcohol protection applications. The scope of substrates and the utility of the catalyst have been thoroughly studied.

    Abstract

    This Highlight Review provides examples of external-stimuli-driven reversible modulations of the spatial, electronic, and magnetic environment around metal centers that bear multifunctional N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). In particular, recent reports on Lewis-base- or Lewis-acid-mediated reversible molecular transformations of Ni(0) complexes that bear N-phosphine-oxide-substituted imidazolylidenes (PoxIms) and the corresponding imidazolinylidenes (SPoxIms) are spotlighted. We also discuss the utility of using X-ray absorption spectroscopy to examine the synthesized (S)PoxIm–Ni complexes to gain spectroscopic insight into the changes in the local environment and electronic state of the metal centers induced by these reversible transformations. Overall, this review highlights the multipurpose utility of multifunctional NHCs as a key to designing and reversibly modulating the local environment of metal centers, which paves the way for accomplishing hitherto challenging molecular transformations and developing unprecedented reactivity of multimetallic compounds.

    The utilization of pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLALs) for preparing gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) in organic solvents holds immense potential across diverse applications. This study introduces a compact and low-power microchip laser (MCL) system (average power 50 mW; pulse energy 0.5 mJ). Due to its compactness, an MCL is advantageous for easy manipulation in organic laboratories during the production of metal nanoparticles (NPs) for research and development purposes. In this research, poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) is used as a stabilizing agent for the preparation of Au NPs in organic solvents (CH2Cl2, CHCl3, 2-PrOH, MeCN, DMF, EtOH, NMP, and DMSO). Our experimental results demonstrate that the particle size remains consistent across all the organic solvents. This study explores the productivity of Au NPs in different organic solvents, revealing the necessity of multiple laser pulses to generate Au NPs successfully. This phenomenon, known as the ‘incubation effect,’ is linked to the lower pulse energy in the experimental condition and the thermal conductivity of the solvents. The findings emphasize the crucial role of solvent properties in determining the Au NPs productivity in PLAL.

    Abstract

    Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and one of the main components of stromal tissues in tumors which have a high elastic modulus of over 50 kPa. Although collagen has been widely used as a cell culture scaffold for cancer cells, there have been limitations when attempting to fabricate a tough collagen gel with cells like a cancer stroma. Here, rapid gelation of a collagen solution within a few minutes by transition metal complexation is demonstrated. Type I collagen solution at neutral pH shows rapid gelation with a transparency of 81% and a high modulus of 1,781 kPa by mixing with K<sub>2</sub>PtCl<sub>4</sub> solution within 3 min. Other transition metal ions also show the same rapid gelation, but not basic metal ions. Interestingly, although type I to IV collagen molecules show rapid gelation, other extracellular matrices  do not exhibit this phenomenon. Live imaging of colon cancer organoids in 3D culture indicates a collective migration property with modulating high elastic modulus, suggesting activation for metastasis progress. This technology will be useful as a new class of 3D culture for cells and organoids due to its facility for deep‐live observation and mechanical stiffness adjustment.

    Abstract

    Bowl-shaped π-conjugated sumanenyltriamines were successfully synthesized in a one-step reaction from bromomethylsumanene. This molecule represents an example of hemiazafullerene (C54N6 fragment) with six isolated pentagons. Its single-crystal X-ray structural analysis showed the formation of one-dimensional columnar structures incorporating chloroform. The hemifullerene (C30 fragment) was also synthesized when the nucleophile was changed to dimethylmalonate.

    Abstract

    Gold nanoparticles stabilised by fibrillated citric acid-modified cellulose (Au:F-CAC) catalyse the intramolecular cycloamination of amines to unactivated alkenes under an aerobic atmosphere to afford pyrrolidine derivatives. Only 0.2 mol% of Au loading is required to complete the reaction. The high sensitivity of the Au:F-CAC catalyst to the substitution pattern of alkenes allows a unique chemoselective cycloamination, affording new compounds.

    It is widely accepted that uptake and efflux transporters on clearance organs play crucial roles in drug disposition. Although in vitro transporter assay system can identify the intrinsic properties of the target transporters, it is not so easy to precisely predict in vivo pharmacokinetic parameters from in vitro data. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging is a useful tool to directly assess the activity of drug transporters in humans. We recently developed a practical synthetic method for fluorine-18-labeled pitavastatin ([18F]PTV) as a PET probe for quantitative evaluation of hepatobiliary transport. In the present study, we conducted clinical PET imaging with [18F]PTV and compared the pharmacokinetic properties of the probe for healthy subjects with or without rifampicin pretreatment. Rifampicin pretreatment significantly suppressed the hepatic maximum concentration and biliary excretion of the probe to 52% and 34% of the control values, respectively. Rifampicin treatment markedly decreased hepatic uptake clearance (21% of the control), and moderately canalicular efflux clearance with regard to hepatic concentration (52% of the control). These results demonstrate that [18F]PTV is a useful probe for clinical investigation of the activities of hepatobiliary uptake/efflux transporters in humans.

    Fluoroalkenes have shown importance as a metabolically stable isostere of amide compounds. To expedite the synthesis of diverse fluoroalkenes, we have developed a dual-reactive C2-unit, (Z)-1-boryl-1-fluoro-2-tosyloxyethene, containing nucleophilic and electrophilic moieties. Consecutive palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of this unit with aryl bromides and aryl boronic acids allow for the convergent synthesis of diverse trans-1,2-diaryl-substituted fluoroethenes in a chemoselective and stereoretentive manner.

    Cellulose-based functional materials have gained immense interest due to their low density, hydrophilicity, chirality, and degradability. So far, a facile and scalable preparation of fibrillated cellulose by treating the hydroxy groups of cellulose with citric acid (F-CAC) has been developed and applied as a reinforcing filler for polypropylene composite. Herein, a size-selective preparation of Au nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized by F-CAC is described. By modifying the conditions of transdeposition method, established in our group previously, a transfer of Au NPs from poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) to F-CAC proceeded up to 96% transfer efficiency with retaining its cluster sizes in EtOH. Meanwhile, the deposition efficiency drastically decreased in the case of nonmodified cellulose, showing the significance of citric acid modification. A shift of binding energy at Au 4f core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy from 82.0 to 83.3 eV indicated that the NPs were stabilized on an F-CAC surface rather than by PVP matrix. The reproducible particle size growth was observed when 2-propanol was used as a solvent instead of EtOH, expanding the range of the available particle size with simple manipulation. The thus-obtained Au:F-CAC nanocatalysts exhibited a catalytic activity toward an aerobic oxidation of 1-indonol in toluene to yield 1-indanone quantitatively and were recyclable at least six times, illustrating high tolerance against organic solvents.

    有機電解合成は、環境に配慮したグリーンな有機合成としてSDGsの観点から期待されているものの、その反応制御法は未開拓な状況である。本研究は、有機電解合成に用いることができる電極触媒を開発し、それを用いたラジカル反応制御法の開拓を行うことで、これまで熱制御が主であった有機合成反応の電気化学制御への転換を目指すものである。具体的には、カーボンナノチューブ(CNT)をはじめとするナノカーボンに金属ナノ粒子や有機光触媒を固定した電極触媒を開発し、それを用いた有機ラジカルの発生と制御を両立する有機電解反応の開発研究を行う。

    In this study, we aimed to elucidate the properties of molecules that emerge during organic chemical reactions and to gain a deeper understanding and interpretation of organic chemistry. To this end, we advanced the analytical technique of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), which utilizes synchrotron radiation X-rays. We developed a solution cell for XAS experiments, which is capable of handling organic solvents, in tender X-ray (TX) region. And by making this TX-XAS solution cell available for collaborative research, we were able to reveal the properties and structures of molecules in solution that had previously been inaccessible through spectroscopic methods. The outcomes generated through the promotion of this research have been published multiple times in top-tier international scientific journals, and we believe they have contributed to firmly bridging the interdisciplinary fields of organic chemistry and synchrotron radiation.

    I have developed alloy nanoparticle catalysts for the catalytic synthesis of highly strained conjugated compounds under mild conditions. A size-selective preparation methods of AuPd nanoparticles were developed and characterized by electron microscopy and spectroscopic analysis using X-rays. The dehydrogenative aromatization of dihydroanthracene was found to proceed under ethylene atmosphere, and anthracene was formed in high yield.
    I also improved the X-ray absorption spectroscopy of the solution system. As a result, I succeeded in detemining of the important intermediate of the Lewis acid-medicated Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction in solution.

    We have developed novel nanoparticle catalysts covered with hydroxylated fullerene as a protective molecule and a chemical transformation reaction using them. We succeeded in preparing gold, platinum, palladium, and rhodium nanoparticles by solution-phase chemical reduction. It was found that the obtained nanoparticles formed a water-dispersible colloids and exhibited high stability in water. In particular, it was found that gold catalysts and platinum nanocatalysts showed high catalytic activity for the oxidation reaction of organic compounds. We also succeeded in preparing nanoparticles of base metal oxides as well as precious metals.
