However, for soils with inner porosity the independent draining of the structural and matrix pores frequently results in two distinct air-entry values, which any single unimodal function does not reproduce adequately. In the presented study, a bimodal lognormal (BLN) SWCCs function have been developed for soils with inner porosity. The model involved two overlaying continua pore systems, the pore probability density functions of systems were assumed as lognormal distribution and them can be superposed to obtain the overall probability density function of the soil. The experimental SWCCs data were used to verify the proposed method. The fitted result showed that the BLN approach resulted in the best agreement between measurement and simulation (R

The previously mentioned properties indicates that the slag is a promising material that can be effectively utilized in various geotechnical aspects where it was reported that it has been used as earth reinforcement technique in harbor construction projects. However, onshore utilization of slag material is limited. It was reported that utilizing sand compaction pile (SCP) method imposes crushing the slag particle resulting in significant education of the hydraulic permeability. This study aims at evaluating the strength development of slag material under various curing times. In order to prevent the significant drop of the hydraulic permeability as a result of early hardening of the crushed particles, the slag particles were mixed with sandy soil sand and subjected to various curing durations then were examined by evaluating the strength development of the adopted mixtures..

A method to combat desertification, Soils and Foundations, 10.1016/j.sandf.2018.03.013, 58, 4, 838-852, 2018.08, One of the reasons for the rapid expansion of arid or semiarid areas is that the decline in the ground water level makes it impossible for plants to get enough water. In order to provide water sustainably for plant life, a self-watering system has been developed. This self-watering system, designed to collect and store rainwater, dew and groundwater, reliably provides water to the surface vegetation. The system consists of two parts: one is the original soil and the other is soil which is replaced by finer soils. The results of laboratory model tests and numerical simulations showed that the system continuously raises the ground water to a level higher than the maximum capillary height of sandy ground without the requirement for any extra energy input. The stable operation of the system mainly depends on unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, the soil water retention curve and the shape and the size of the area of replaced soil. Because the original top soil reduces evaporation, soil salinization is minimal. The evaporation rate is negatively and exponentially correlated to the thickness of the covered original soil. Both the T-type system and suspension-type system have been shown to have a larger net capillary storage capacity than the original sandy ground, with a specific value dependent on the soil water retention curve. The rate of water movement in the T-type system is five to six times higher than that in the suspension-type system. The water content of coarser soil near the finer soil is larger than that of homogeneous coarser soil. The numerical simulation results were in good agreement with the model test, and a case study with various potential transpiration rates was conducted to evaluate the dynamic performance of the system..

Digital images were captured for the plastic deformations of the soil during the lateral loading from the top of the testing chamber.
Combination of photo image analysis and analytical cyclic p-y curve methods was implemented for estimating the three dimensional (3D) failure zone adjacent to pile shaft. The 3Dfailure pattern of the soil around single pile shaft was investigated through two steps, including: (1) determination of
the range of lateral plastic deformations at the top of ground surface in perpendicular and parallel directions of cyclic loads;
and (2) determination of the point of rotation (zero displacement) along the pile shaft. Experimental results showed that a conical
passive zone of plastic deformations is established around pile shaft due to applying two-way lateral cyclic loading at pile head.
Based on the findings, design considerations for piles subjected to lateral cyclic loading have been introduced..

It is necessary to reduce the utilization of cement due to its production contributes to high CO2 emission to the environment. Selection of the natural material considers the potential of
availability and workability. Bamboo, as one of the natural resources, is easy to obtain due to its ability to grow in varying conditions. In the form of bamboo chips and bamboo leaf ash, there are high water absorbability and pozzolanic content, respectively. Effect of bamboo materials addition in the mixture to the mechanical properties was investigated. Many variations in the mixture were performed to determine the effect of cementreplacement by bamboo material. Aspect of geo-environment becomes the main goal of this study through the utilization of natural materials in soil improvement. Furthermore, the
environmental impact by material addition can be investigatedby life cycle assessment..

The angle of tapering is inserted in the proposed model to evaluate the end-bearing capacity. The test results of the proposed model in different types of sands and different relative densities show good effects compared to conventional straight piles. The end-bearing capacity increases with increases in the tapering angle. The paper then propounds a model for prototypes and real-type pile tests which predicts and validates to evaluate the end-bearing capacity..
