Kazuo Kato, Takashi Aoki, Yasushi Okamoto, Keiji Tanaka, Atsushi Takahara, Reliability analysis of adhesive for PBT-epoxy interface, 2007 World Congress, 2007, PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) and epoxy adhesive, which both have superior heat resistance and environmental resistance, are a representative combination now being applied to many parts. Generally, PBT is annealed after molding at a temperature above the glass transition temperature to ensure dimensional stability when in use. But in this case, this process decreases the adhesive strength between PBT and epoxy. This study analyzes the adhesion degradation mechanism in this system and a countermeasure technology is proposed. Regarding this PBT-epoxy adhesion degradation mechanism, focus is placed on changes in the fracture surface, which is analyzed before and after annealing. From this analysis it becomes clear that generation of a WBL (weak boundary layer) is caused by non-crystallization and a migration of the PBT functional group on the adhesion surface layer. According to this mechanism, it is clear that control of the functional group on the surface layer and reforming of a new functional group are very effective ways to maintain adhesive strength after annealing..

Tomoyuki Koga, Zhe Wang, Motoyasu Kobayashi, Hideyuki Otsuka, Atsushi Takahara, Evaluation of nano- And micro adhesion characteristics of glycidyl groups immobilized surface by scanning force microscope with chemically modified cantilever tips, 55th Society of Polymer Science Japan Symposium on Macromolecules, 2006.12, In order to evaluate the nano- and micro adhesion properties at the surface of glycidyl groups immobilized Si-wafer substrate, the adhesion force and lateral force measurements were carried out by the scanning force microscope with chemically modified cantilever tips. Large adhesion force and lateral force were observed at the surface of grycidyl groups immobilized Si-wafer substrates with the hydroxyl groups immobilized cantilever tip in pH=7 purified water. The observed large interactive force between hydroxyl groups terminated cantilever tip and surface glycidyl groups in pH=7 purified water can be explained by the interaction being originated from the hydrogen bonds between highly hydrolyzed glycidyl groups on the GPTMS immobilized Si-wafer substrate surface and hydroxyl groups at the surface of chemically modified cantilever tips..

Shigekazu Yasutake, Masamichi Morita, Susumu Sakio, Jun Fukai, Atsushi Takahara, Fabrication of thin films by the ink-jet method onto the substrate with two-dimensionally controlled wetting properties, 55th Society of Polymer Science Japan Symposium on Macromolecules, 2006.12, The purpose of this study is to establish the fundamental technology of site-selective coating of polymer or metal thin film utilizing wetting contrast of line-patterned substrate. Line-patterned fluoroalkylsilane monolayer with lyophobic/lyophilic area (line width 1-20 μm) was prepared through vacuum ultra violet photolithography process. Lyophobic and lyophilic areas were terminated with silanol and fluoroalkyl groups, respectively. On this surface, a macroscopic droplet of polymer solution or metal suspension shows anisotropic wetting behavior. Microscopic droplets of a xylene solution of polystyrene (PS), a xylene solution of polyfluorene (F8) or silver nanoparticle suspension were deposited on the micropatterned surface by the ink-jet method. The PS, F8 or silver thin films were selectively formed on the micropatterned lyophilic areas..

Motoyasu Kobayashi, Yasuhiro Matsuda, Zhe Wang, Atsushi Takahara, Naoya Torikai, Masataka Kaido, Atsushi Suzuki, Kazuhiko Ishihara, Frictional properties of hydrophilic polymer brushes under wet condition, 55th Society of Polymer Science Japan Symposium on Macromolecules, 2006.12, The hydrophilic polymer brushes were prepared by surface-initiated ATRP of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) on the initiator-immobilized silicon wafer. Poly(DMAEMA) brush was treated with methyl iodide to give a cationic polymer brush. Water contact angles of the cationic brush and poly(MPC) brush were 39° and 5°, respectively. Frictional properties of these polyelectrolyte brushes were characterized by sliding a glass ball probe on the brush surfaces in air and water under the load of 0.49 N at a sliding rate of 90 mm/min. Friction coefficients of polymer brushes in water and humid air were lower than that in dry air. Further low friction coefficient was observed by sliding a glass ball immobilized with poly(MPC) brush on the surface of poly(MPC)-immobilized silicon wafer under humid air condition..

Kazuya Yamamoto, Hideyuki Otsuka, Atsushi Takahara, Preparation and characterization of polymer hybrid based on specific interaction between inorganic nanofiber and polymers, 55th Society of Polymer Science Japan Symposium on Macromolecules, 2006.12, Inorganic nanofiber imogolite exhibits specific interaction on the surface with specific functional groups. Adsorption of sodium octadecyl sulfonate on the surface of imogolite was confirmed by IR measurement. Polymer hybrid was prepared using conjugated polymer with sulfonate groups based on imogolite nanofiber. Poly[2,5-bis(3-sulfonatopropoxy)-1,4-phenylene, disodium salt-alt-1,4-phenylene: WS-PPP] was used as water soluble conjugated polymer. The imogolite/ WS-PPP hybrid prepared with imogolite/WS-PPP weight ratio of 1/3 was dissolved in aqueous solution completely. The FE-SEM image of the hybrid (imogolite/WS-PPP=l/3) showed nanofibers with smaller diameter ?compared with nanofibers prepared at lower weight ratio. Ryosuke Matsuno, Hideyuki Otsuka, Atsushi Takahara, Preparation and properties of nanohybrid with polystyrene-grafted-metal oxide nanoparticles, 55th SPSJ Annual Meeting, 2006.10, PS-grafted-titanium oxide (diameter 15 nm, TiO2) and PS-grafted-aluminum hydroxide (diameter 37 nm, Al2O 3·xH2O) nanoparticles were successfully prepared through direct polymerization from immobilized surface initiator that has both phosphoric acid moiety and living radical polymerization moiety. In the case of PS film with non-grafted-TiO2, the films did not show high light transmittance and ultraviolet absorption characteristic owing to the aggregation of nanoparticles. On the other hand, in the case of PS film with PS-grafted-TiO2, the films showed high transmittance in the visible light region accompanying ultraviolet absorption characteristic of TiO 2 due to the fine dispersion of nanoparticles into PS matrix. PS film with PS-grafted-Al2O3·xH2O showed good flame resistance compared with non-grafted-pseudo-boehmite or PS-grafted-boehmite with diameter 240 nm and 110 nm (plate) because of good dispersion in PS matrix and release of structural water during PS degradation..

Line-patterned fluoroalkylsilane monolayer with lyophobic/lyophilic area (line width 1-20 μm) was prepared through vacuum ultra violet photolithography process. Lyophobic and lyophilic areas were terminated with silanol and fluoroalkyl groups, respectively. The thin films of polymer or metal were site-selectively formed on the micropatterned lyophilic areas. In the case of using the patterned organosilane monolayer with long alkyl-chains, unpatterned thin films were fabricated. Hence, large wetting contrast between lyophobic and lyophilic areas is necessary to fabricate the patterned thin films by the IJ method..
