Outline Activities
His research and educational fields are machine design and tribology. He worked on a variety of roughness-related tribology problems, including running-in, fractal modeling for hydrodynamic lubrication, wear processes, and ultra-thin film lubrication. He also studied non-steady state elastohydrodynamic lubrication in the UK and Japan, to which was awarded 1998 ASME Tribology Division Best Paper Award. His recent interests are hydrogen effects, thin film lubrication with nano and micro texture, fluid transportation in seals, grease lubricatoin, etc. He was the chief of the hydrogen refueling station project, and worked to investigate the accident that occurred in late 2005. He led the hydrogen tribology team for a NEDO project "Fundamental Research Project on Advanced Hydrogen Science" in National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.
He teaches machine design and descriptive geometry to undergraduates, and tribology and advanced energy engineering in graduate school. He was the head of Department of Mechanical Engineering Science of Graduate School of Engineering from April 2009 to March 2010, the head of Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems of Graduate School of Engineering from April 2010 till March 2011, and from April 2016 to March 2017, and is the director of Research Center for Hydrogen Industrial Use and Storage (HYDROGENIUS) from April 2013. He also worked for National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) as a director of AIST-Kyushu University Hydrogen Materials Laboratory (HydroMate) from January 2017 to March 2021.
He works for academic societies as the member of many committees; Fellow of JSME, and Fellow of STLE. He also takes the role of editor-in-chief for Tribology Online, and associate editors of three other international journals, a board member and a president of the Japanese Society of Tribologists (JAST) in 2020 and 2021.

Important issues on materials include hydrogen embrittlement of metals and blistering and other failures of elastomers. Important issues in tribology include tribochemical reactions at metal surfaces, transfer film formation and hydrogen permeation in solids..
