Outline Activities
The main target of my research is "Utilization of geothermal energy". For this target, I research some geothermal field by mainly geophysical methods and evaluate the geothermal fluid flow of the field by some numerical model.
Now I am conducting three joint researches with other organizations. And I was a member of some committees of New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
I have two lectures in English for foreign students.

In order to infer the mass balance and energy balance of the hydrothermal system in the Kuju volcanic area, we tried to estimate volcanic CO2 emission and to construct a numerical model of the hydrothermal system of Kuju Volcano.
We considered four forms of volcanic CO2 emission; from the fumaroles, the bare area around the fumaroles, the flank by the soil gas, and some hot springs at the foot of the volcano. We adopted the value of about 166 t/day from the plumes of Kuju Volcano estimated by Ehara et at. (1981). On the other hand, Itoi (1993) shows the distribution of soil gas CO2 concentration in the bare area around the fumaroles. In our previous study (Araragi et al., 2008), the relationship between soil gas CO2 concentration measured by the Kitagawa Gas Detector Tube System and CO2 flux measured by a CO2 flux meter in Kuju Volcano was found. Therefore, the CO2 concentration values shown by Itoi (1993) were converted into the CO2 flux values, and about 0.8 t/day of the volcanic CO2 emission was estimated. We measured soil gas CO2 concentration at 60 points on the flank of the volcano by the Kitagawa Gas Detector Tube System and collected 15 soil gas samples to conduct the carbon isotope analysis to identify the origin of the CO2. As a result, we concluded that the volcanic CO2 emission from the flank was 0 t/day. And for the CO2 emission from the hot springs at the foot of the volcano, the hot water discharge rate and the average CO2 concentration in the carbonated water of the Nagayu Hot Springs area was adopted. Then about 5.0 t/day of the volcanic CO2 emission from Nagayu Hot Springs was estimated. These results show that the volcanic CO2 emissions by the plumes from the fumaroles and by the carbonated water from a hot springs area are dominant in Kuju Volcano.
In order to construct a numerical model of the hydrothermal system of Kuju Volcano, we used a geothermal simulator STAR Version 9 (Pritchett, 1989) that can treat the components of H2O and CO2 but has the limitations of temperature from 0 to 350 deg. C and pressure from 1 to 600 bars. The modeling area has a horizontal extension of 25 km (E-W) and 15 km (N-S), and a vertical extension from -500 m asl to the ground surface. Finally, we constructed a numerical model, which explains the heat discharge rate and CO2 emission rate by the plumes from the fumaroles and the CO2 emission rate from the Nagayu Hot Springs area, by trial and error. This numerical model also indicates that the volcanic CO2 emission is dominated by the gas from the fumaroles and hot water from Nagayu Hot Springs..

Yasuhiro Fujimitsu, Precise Repeat Gravity Measurement for Estimation of Mass Balance in a Geothermal Reservoir, 2013 APEC Workshop on Geothermal Energy Development, 2013.06, Precise repeat gravity measurement, which is also called as “repeat microgravity measurement”, is one of the suitable methods for geothermal reservoir monitoring. In a geothermal power station area, the production and reinjection of geothermal fluid cause mass movement and redistribution, which can cause measurable gravity changes on the ground surface. And the mass balance in the geothermal reservoir, especially the relation between production and recharge of the geothermal fluid, can be estimated from the temporal gravity changes measured on the ground surface..

Yasuhiro Fujimitsu, Simulation Technologies for JBBP, 10th International Workshop on Water Dynamics & ICDP Japan Beyond-Brittle Project, 2013.03, Even in JBBP, existing HDR simulation techniques are fundamentally applicable because the fractures are created in a brittle area. However, when the well-known HDR simulator Geocrack (Swenson and Hardman, 1997) or D/SC (Tezuka and Watanabe, 2000) is applied to JBBP, we will encounter two problems. One is high temperature especially in the early stage of fracture development. Unfortunately, current version of Geocrack and D/SC cannot treat supercritical water. But techniques for treatment of supercritical water has already adopted by some geothermal reservoir simulators (e.g. HYDROTHERM (Hayba and Ingebritsen, 1994), and the supercritical module of TOUGH2 (Pruess, 1991) and STAR (Pritchett, 1995)), and the techniques are applicable to Geocrack and D/SC. The other problem is fracture modeling. For example, treatment of fractures in D/SC is excellent. However, it is expected to be difficult to acquire some core samples or to observe the wall surface of the wells drilled in JBBP. Therefore, information on the fractures for deterministic and stochastic fracture modeling is hard to obtain. For solving the problem, modeling techniques for fracturing in shale gas reservoirs are expected to be informative..

I am conducting some joint researches with other organizations (see the list of "Joint research/surveys and research commissions"), and was a member of some committees of NEDO (see the list of "Committee activities").
