Takuma YASUDA received his Ph.D. in 2005 from Tokyo Institute of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Takakazu Yamamoto. After completing postdoctoral research with Prof. Takashi Kato at the University of Tokyo, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Tokyo in 2008. In 2010, he moved to Kyushu University where he joined Prof. Chihaya Adachi’s group as Associate Professor. He was also a concurrent researcher of JST-PRESTO from 2011 to 2014. In 2014, he was appointed Professor at the INAMORI Frontier Research Center of Kyushu University. Since 2022, he has been Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Kyushu University. His research is directed towards the design, synthesis, functionalization, and device applications of electro- and photo-active π-conjugated molecular materials. His current research interests include pioneering a new organic excitonics field aimed at unexplored and innovative functions. To date, he has published over 160 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, which have been cited over 12,500 times with an h-index of 60.

    Highly efficient narrowband organic luminophores offer immense potentials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with high color purity of electroluminescence (EL). Appropriately controlling their structural relaxation and vibronic couplings between the excited and ground states enables the desired narrowband emissions. Herein, based on a design concept featuring dendritic modifications, we demonstrate the exquisite color tuning of narrowband emissions from deep blue to green in non-boron ubiquitous molecular systems. By attaching two or four arylamine-based dendritic units to the periphery of the indolo[3,2,1-jk]indolo[1′,2′,3′:1,7]indolo[3,2-b]carbazole (BICz) core, BICz-1.5G, BICz-2G, and BICz-2GII were developed as deep-blue, sky-blue, and green narrowband emitters, respectively. Comprehensive photophysical and computational studies revealed that the dendritic modifications do not impair the inherent narrowband emission ability of BICz while enhancing its thermally activated delayed fluorescence properties. OLEDs incorporating BICz-1.5G and BICz-2GII demonstrated high-efficiency, high-color-purity blue and green EL, with maximum external quantum efficiencies as high as 24.0% and 28.5%, respectively, and CIE coordinates of (0.13, 0.10) and (0.21, 0.68). Our findings will contribute to expanding the search space for narrowband organic luminophores.

    Advanced cutting-edge organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technologies require narrowband electroluminescence (EL) with high quantum efficiency to growing performance demand. Here, sequential indolo-fusion π-extension as a rational design strategy to further narrow the emission bandwidth of multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) is introduced. By fusing one or two additional indole moieties to the periphery of Cz-B, a typical MR-TADF motif, gradual spectra narrowing, and accelerated triplet–singlet exciton spin conversion are concurrently achieved. Suppressing vibronic couplings induced by high-frequency vibrational modes is vital for achieving extreme spectral narrowing. OLEDs based on a doubly indolo-fused MR-TADF emitter, IDCz-B-II, exhibited ultra-narrowband sky-blue EL with a full width at half maximum of 21 nm (0.11 eV), maximum external EL quantum efficiency of 25.9%, and reduced efficiency roll-off, significantly outperforming the Cz-B-based device. The present indolo-fusion strategy provides a simple yet promising approach for developing isomeric MR-TADF materials with different fusing positions and orientations.

    Photon-upconversion (PUC) processes in organic molecular systems, such as triplet-triplet upconversion and hot-band absorption, are promising technologies for future energy harvesting. Although these processes can generate high-energy excitons compared to excitation energy, a PUC process with a high yield and no energy loss has not been established and, therefore, is highly desired. Here, we propose an alternative PUC mechanism that uses reverse intersystem crossing on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules. This process combines a triplet sensitizer and a TADF molecule, generating a triplet in the former and transferring it to the latter. Specifically, the triplet energy transfer from Ir(ppy)3 (sensitizer) to CzBSe (TADF) results in anti-Stokes emission with an anti-Stokes energy of 0.18 eV. We found that the triplet energy transfer rate strongly depends on the triplet radiative decay rate of TADF molecules and the difference in Gibbs energy between the energy acceptor and donor. Our findings will contribute to understanding triplet energy transfer dynamics in organic energy donor-acceptor systems and will lead to various applications, such as future optical cooling systems.

    Longer-wavelength phosphorescence in the near-infrared (NIR) region has attracted attention in the field of biological application. Compared to widely studied shorter-wavelength green and yellow phosphorescence, achieving NIR phosphorescence is difficult because of a lack of versatile strategies using a phosphorescent platform. An NIR emission near 720 nm was observed for the benzoselenodiazole dye BSeD(OMe)-Br bearing bromine atoms and methoxy groups; nevertheless, its phosphorescence efficiency is weak. The NIR phosphorescence emission increased significantly when a trace amount of BSeD(OMe)-Br was incorporated into the one-dimensional aggregate structure composed of the corresponding benzothiadiazole dye BTD(OMe)-Br. In this host-guest BTD(OMe)-Br/BSeD(OMe)-Br system, an effective Dexter-type energy transfer with 92% efficiency occurs from the excited triplet state of the host BTD(OMe)-Br molecule to the excited triplet state of the guest BSeD(OMe)-Br molecule. In the 100 : 0.5 host-guest system, the phosphorescence intensity was enhanced by a factor of 200. The enhanced NIR phosphorescence through efficient energy transfer is attributed to a highly ordered host-guest aggregate structure arising from the same crystal packing pattern of the structurally similar host and guest molecules.

    Figure-eight-shaped nonplanar π-systems adopt distinctive chiral D2-symmetric structures, which are ideal for realizing efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). However, the short-step and enantioselective synthesis of figure-eight π-systems represents a considerable challenge for the conventional bottom-up synthetic strategy. Herein, we report that the oxidative cleavage of the internal double bond of a commercially available polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, i.e., dibenzo[g,p]chrysene (DBC), catalytically affords a figure-eight electron-accepting macrocycle, i.e., cyclobisbiphenylenecarbonyl (CBBC), with high scalability (up to 3.3 g) and excellent enantioselectivity (94% ee). This inner-bond-cleavage approach also applies to larger PAHs, affording highly distorted molecular frameworks that comprise two figure-eight subunits. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the peripheral functionalization of CBBC with carbazole afforded donor-acceptor-type emitter, which shows thermally activated delayed fluorescence and emits CPL with a g value of 1.0 × 10-2. This g value is ten times higher than those of previously reported chiral TADF-active emitters for circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes. These results demonstrate that oxidative inner-bond cleavage is a powerful synthetic strategy for creating innovative materials that incorporate molecules with figure-eight structures.

    Visible-to-ultraviolet photon upconversion (UC) based on triplet-triplet annihilation was demonstrated in metal-free glassy solid films consisting of an organoboron photosensitizer and diphenylnaphthalene-based emitter. Upon photoexcitation at 445 nm, UC emissions in the ultraviolet region (370-390 nm) were observed in binary solid films with high UC efficiencies of up to 2.6% and a threshold excitation intensity as low as 44 mW cm−2

    Polycyclic π-conjugated compounds that contain tricoordinate boron atoms at their periphery represent an attractive class of materials with electron-accepting character. Their molecular design generally requires the introduction of a bulky aryl group onto the boron atom, where it provides predominantly kinetic stabilization. The addition of extra functionality to the aryl group on the boron atom can be expected to further expand the potential utility of this class of materials. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of boracyclic π-conjugated molecules with firm ortho B⋅⋅⋅N nonbonding interactions by introducing N-containing electron-donors at the ortho-positions of the aryl group on the boron atom. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that the combination of a planar boracyclic π-skeleton with only sp2 carbons and a strong electron-donating phenothiazine moiety results in a particularly short B⋅⋅⋅N distance. Theoretical study provided insights into the inherent nature of the B⋅⋅⋅N interaction. Owing to their donor–acceptor (D−A) structures, these molecules exhibit substantially red-shifted fluorescence in solution, albeit that the fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) are low. In contrast, when incorporated into films, these compounds exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with improved ΦF values. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) fabricated using the ortho-donor-substituted derivatives exhibit orange-red electroluminescence.

    Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with high photoluminescence quantum yields and fast reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) capabilities are highly desirable for applications in high-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes. Herein, we report the synthesis as well as structural and photophysical properties of 5,9-diselena-13b-boranaphtho[3,2,1-de]anthracene (SeBSe) as a narrowband-emissive TADF material. The incorporation of two selenium atoms into the boron-fused pentacyclic π-core results in a small singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔEST) and thereby significant TADF properties. Moreover, theoretical calculations revealed a noticeable spin-orbit coupling enhancement between the singlet and triplet manifolds in SeBSe by virtue of the heavy-atom effect of selenium atoms. Consequently, SeBSe allows ultrafast spin-flip RISC with the rate constant surpassing 108 s−1, which far exceeds the corresponding fluorescence radiative decay rate (∼106 s−1), enabling an ideal singlet–triplet superimposed excited state.

    Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials and multi-resonant (MR) variants are promising organic emitters that can achieve an internal electroluminescence quantum efficiency of ~100%. The reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) is key for harnessing triplet energies for fluorescence. Theoretical modeling is thus crucial to estimate its rate constant (kRISC) for material development. Here, we present a comprehensive assessment of the theory for simulating the RISC of MR-TADF molecules within a perturbative excited-state dynamics framework. Our extended rate formula reveals the importance of the concerted effects of nonadiabatic spin-vibronic coupling and vibrationally induced spin-orbital couplings in reliably determining kRISC of MR-TADF molecules. The excited singlet-triplet energy gap is another factor influencing kRISC. We present a scheme for gap estimation using experimental Arrhenius plots of kRISC. Erroneous behavior caused by approximations in Marcus theory is elucidated by testing 121 MR-TADF molecules. Our extended modeling offers in-depth descriptions of kRISC

    Photon-upconversion in organic molecular systems is one of the promising technologies for future energy harvesting systems because these systems can generate excitons that possess higher energy than excitation energy. The photon-upconversion caused by absorbing ambient heat as additional energy is particularly interesting because it could ideally provide a light-driving cooling system. However, only a few organic molecular systems have been reported. Here, we report the anti-Stokes photoluminescence (ASPL) derived from hot-band absorption in a series of multi-resonance-type thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) molecules. The MR-TADF molecules exhibited an anti-Stokes shift of approximately 0.1 eV with a high PL quantum yield in the solution state. The anti-Stokes shift corresponded well to the 1–0 vibration transition from the ground state to the excited singlet state, and we further evaluated a correlation between the activation energy for the ASPL intensity and the TADF process. Our demonstration underlines that MR-TADF molecules have become a novel class of ASPL materials for various future applications, such as light-driving cooling systems.

    Herein, a simple and versatile molecular design for long-wavelength (>550 nm) multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluoresence emitters is reported. Extending a fully fused polycyclic π-system with an additional para-N-π-N conjugation induces narrowband bright-yellow photoluminescence and electroluminescence emissions at ∼560 nm.

    The development of high-performance wide-bandgap polymers has attracted significant attention in recent non-fullerene organic solar cells (NF-OSCs) research, as the expansion of the options of polymer donors that are appropriately matched with nonfullerene acceptors can lead to the further improvement of photovoltaic properties. In this study, two wide-bandgap π-conjugated polymers, namely, P(TPTI-BDT) and P(2DTP-BDT), based on fused pentacyclic bis-lactam and dimeric bis-lactam units, were prepared and used as the donor materials for NF-OSCs with IT-4F as the acceptor. The NF-OSCs based on the P(TPTI-BDT):IT-4F blends outperformed the corresponding P(2DTP-BDT):IT-4F-based devices, achieving high power conversion efficiencies of up to 11.7% without processing additives or post-treatments. Further investigation of the thin-film morphologies using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed that both P(TPTI-BDT) and P(2DTP-BDT) adopted preferential face-on molecular orientations and formed finely nano-segregated bulk-heterojunction morphologies when blended with IT-4F.

    With the advancement of artificial intelligence computing systems that can collect, analyze, and utilize metadata from our activities and surrounding environments, establishing self-powered electronic systems/networks supported by energy harvesters is strongly desired. With the lowering of power consumption in contemporary IoT electronics such as wireless sensors, indoor organic photovoltaic devices (iOPVs), which can be driven under ambient indoor light, have recently attracted significant interest as self-sustainable eco-friendly power sources. iOPVs based on organic semiconductors have unique advantages, such as light weight, flexibility, solution processability, and feasibility of low-temperature mass production. Additionally, the spectral tunability and high optical absorptivity of organic semiconductors make iOPVs more effective as energy harvesters in indoor lighting environments. With recent intensive research effort, iOPVs have realized the delivery of high power conversion efficiencies exceeding 25% with output power densities of several tens to a hundred μW cm−2, which are sufficient to drive various low-power electronics compatible with the IoT. This review article focuses on recent progress in iOPVs based on π-conjugated polymers and oligomeric materials and outlines their fundamental principles and characterization techniques.

    D-A-type π-conjugated polymers, P(BDT-BTI) and P(BDT-BTA) bearing cyclic imide and amide (lactam) moieties, respectively, were designed and synthesized for application in organic photovoltaics (OPV). The introduction of electron-withdrawing imide and amide moieties lowered the HOMO energy levels of the polymers, leading to an increase in the open-circuit voltages of OPV. Complementary photoabsorption over the entire visible range was achieved by combining P(BDT-BTI) and P(BDT-BTA) with a typical non-fullerene acceptor, IT-4F. Unlike P(BDT-BTI), P(BDT-BTA) maintained high crystallinity and retained π-π stacking interactions and face-on orientation in the blend films with IT-4F. Consequently, OPV based on P(BDT-BTA):IT-4F blends achieved power conversion efficiencies as high as 9.6% without any processing additives or post-treatments.

    Sulfur-embedded polycyclic aromatic compounds have been used as building blocks for numerous organic semiconductors over the past few decades. While the success is based on thiophene-containing compounds, aromatic compounds that contain thiepine, a sulfur-containing seven-membered-ring arene, has been less well investigated. Here we report the synthesis and properties of π-extended pyrrole-fused heteropine compounds such as thiepine and oxepine. A π-extended pyrrole-fused thiepine exhibited a “pitched π-stacking” structure in the crystal, and exhibited a high charge carrier mobility of up to 1.0 cm2 V−1 s−1 in single-crystal field-effect transistors.

    Organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have attracted significant research interest in the field of organic electronics because of their inherent advantage of 100% exciton utilization capability in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) without the use of noble metals. However, despite their high internal electroluminescence quantum efficiencies approaching unity, broad emission spectra with sizable full width at half maxima (FWHM; 60–100 nm) present a critical issue that must be solved for their application in ultrahigh-definition OLED displays. Recently, a new paradigm of TADF materials featuring the multiple resonance (MR) effect based on heteroatom-doped polycyclic aromatic frameworks, referred to as MR-TADF materials, has emerged and garnered considerable research interest owing to their remarkable features of efficient narrowband emissions with extremely small FWHMs (≤30 nm). Currently, MR-TADF materials occupy a prominent position in the cutting-edge research on organic light-emitting materials from both chemical and physical perspectives. This review article focuses on recent progress in narrowband emissive MR-TADF systems from the perspective of molecular design, photophysical properties, and electroluminescence performance in OLEDs. The current status and future prospects of this advanced material technology are discussed comprehensively.

    Establishing a simple molecular design strategy for enabling redshifted emissions while maintaining high color purity in multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) remains a crucial yet challenging task. Herein, we introduce a new design concept based on a dimerization strategy for constructing pure green MR-TADF emitters. Two isomeric MR dimers, namely p-CzB and m-CzB, were developed by tethering two MR fragments through different linking positions. The interconnection mode between the two MR fragments in these dimeric MR-TADF systems plays a vital role in regulating photophysical properties as well as exciton dynamics. Comprehensive photophysical and computational studies revealed that m-CzB exhibits superior green MR-TADF characteristics compared to p-CzB. A m-CzB-based organic light-emitting diode (OLED) delivered pure green electroluminescence with CIE coordinates of (0.20, 0.70), a maximum external quantum efficiency of 23.5%, and alleviated efficiency roll-off.

    A selenium-doped polycyclic organoboron emitter exhibits ultrafast triplet–singlet exciton interconversion ability in addition to strong narrowband blue emission. Its spin-flip reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) rate exceeds 108 s−1 (100 million times spin inversion per second), enabling superimposed fluorescence with full exciton utilization. This breakthrough shatters the stereotypical physicochemical views of conventional thermally activated delayed fluorescence limited by slow RISC.

    Exciton lifetime is a critical factor in determining the performance of optoelectronic functional systems and devices. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters that can concurrently achieve a high fluorescence quantum yield and short exciton lifetime are desirable for application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with suppressed efficiency roll-off. Herein, phenoxaborin and xanthone-cored TADF emitters with quadrupolar electronic structures are reported to exhibit sub-microsecond TADF lifetimes as short as 650 and 970 ns, respectively, while preserving high fluorescence quantum yields. By extending the El-Sayed rule to the quadrupolar π-systems, the contribution of doubly degenerate charge-transfer excited states induced by dual donor units can enhance the spin–orbit coupling between them, leading to a spin-flip acceleration between the excited triplet and singlet states. This electronic feature is advantageous for mitigating exciton annihilation processes in the emission layer, thereby reducing the efficiency roll-offs in OLEDs. Consequently, a high external electroluminescence quantum efficiency over 20% can be retained, even under operating the device at a high luminance of 1000 cd m−2.

    The facile synthesis and chiroptical properties of a new family of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials, axially chiral 1,1′-bicarbazolyls (BiCz), are reported. The BiCz derivatives emitted intense near-ultraviolet photoluminescence, with a peak at ∼380 nm. The BiCz enantiomers showed mirror-image circular dichroism and CPL, with glum values on the order of 10−4 in solution.

    To achieve an ultimate wide color gamut for ultrahigh-definition displays, there is great demand for the development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) enabling monochromatic, ultrapure blue electroluminescence (EL). Herein, high-efficiency and ultrapure blue OLEDs based on polycyclo-heteraborin multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials, BOBO-Z, BOBS-Z, and BSBS-Z, are reported. The key to the design of the present luminophores is the exquisite combination and interplay of multiple boron, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur heteroatoms embedded in a fused polycyclic π-system. Comprehensive photophysical and computational investigations of this family of MR-TADF materials reveal that the systematic implementation of chalcogen (oxygen and sulfur) atoms can finely modulate the emission color while maintaining a narrow bandwidth, as well as the spin-flipping rates between the excited singlet and triplet states. Consequently, OLEDs based on BOBO-Z, BOBS-Z, and BSBS-Z demonstrate narrowband and ultrapure blue EL emission, with peaks at 445–463 nm and full width at half maxima of 18–23 nm, leading to Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage-y coordinates in the range of 0.04–0.08. Particularly, for OLEDs incorporating sulfur-doped BOBS-Z and BSBS-Z, notably high maximum external EL quantum efficiencies of 26.9% and 26.8%, respectively, and small efficiency roll-offs are achieved concurrently.

    The development of high-performance organoboron luminophores with narrowband emission capabilities is desirable for advancing organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, a unique regioselective interior/exterior borylation strategy is introduced for macrocyclic azacalix[3]arenes, enabling the synthesis of two distinct organoboron luminophores with narrowband thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). By applying two different one-shot borylation conditions, we selectively obtain (i) internally borylated in-B-ACCz, which exhibits narrowband violet TADF, and (ii) externally borylated ex-B-ACCz, which achieves narrowband blue TADF with an exceptionally high photoluminescence quantum yield approaching 100%. Furthermore, OLEDs utilizing ex-B-ACCz demonstrate narrowband blue electroluminescence with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 23.1%. This study offers valuable insights into the design and synthesis of novel organoboron luminophores and photofunctional π-conjugated macrocycles.

    We present the oxidative transformation of a corrole isomer, namely, dibenzocorrorin (3), featuring a modified connectivity pattern of bipyrrole moieties within the corrole scaffold, resulting in the formation of pyrrole-embedded polycyclic molecules (1 and 2). The X-ray crystallography analysis of compound 1 revealed the establishment of three C–N bonds through nitrogen sites in the pyrrole and indole rings, leading to a highly π-conjugated core with nine fused aromatic rings. Notably, the β-pyrrole protons of the diazadicyclopentaazulene moiety displayed significant high-field shifts in the 1H-NMR spectrum, attributed to the 12π antiaromatic contribution of the diazadicyclopentaazulene segment, as indicated by NICS and ACID plot analyses. Compound 1 exhibited a broad near-infrared absorption beyond 1000 nm, a narrow electrochemical energy gap (ΔE = 1.15 V), a short excited-state lifetime, and stable photothermal conversion capability. The crystalline packing structure of 1, characterized by staircase-like stacking along the long axis of needle-shaped crystals, facilitated the fabrication of a single-crystal organic field-effect transistor. The resulting device demonstrated p-type semiconductor behaviour, emphasizing the potential of 1 in near-infrared optoelectronic applications.

    Carbazole dendrimers are promising materials for realizing highly efficient solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Merging carbazole dendrimers with a light-metal complex enables the development of solution-processable materials with excellent optical properties. In this work, highly luminescent Al complexes with carbazole-based dendritic ligands were developed. Metal complexation enhances photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties compared with the corresponding dendritic ligands. Consequently, the Al complex containing symmetric dendritic ligands exhibited a high PLQY of 70% with a delayed fluorescence lifetime of 16 μs in the doped film. Solution-processed OLEDs using these Al complexes as emitters exhibited excellent performance with an external electroluminescence quantum efficiency of 10.6% at a luminance of 100 cd m-2. These results present a strategy to improve the TADF properties and contribute to expanding the chemical space of the TADF materials.

    Two tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl (TTM)-type luminescent radicals, TTM-(3PCz)2 and TTM-(3PCz)3, bearing 2 and 3 9-phenylcarbazol-3-yl (3PCz) substituents, respectively, were synthesized and characterized. The photobleaching of these radicals was suppressed compared with that of previously reported TTM-type luminescent radicals, suggesting a favorable effect of the multiple electron-donating 3PCz groups on the photostability of the TTM-type radicals.

    Carbazole-triazine dendrimers with a bulky terminal substituent were synthesized, and the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) property was investigated. Compared to unsubstituted carbazole dendrimers, dendrimers with bulky terminal substituents showed comparable to better photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) in neat films. Phenylfluorene (PF)-substituted dendrimers showed the highest PLQY of 81%, a small ΔEst of 0.06 eV, and the fastest reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) rate of ∼1 × 105 s−1 compared to other dendrimers. Phosphorescence measurements of dendrimers and dendrons (fragments) indicate that the close proximity of the triplet energy of phenylfluorene-substituted carbazole dendrons (3LE) to that of phenylfluorene-substituted dendrimers (1CT, 3CT) contributes to RISC promotion and improves TADF efficiency. Terminal modification fine-tunes the energy level and suppresses intermolecular interactions, and this study provides a guideline for designing efficient solution-processable and non-doped TADF materials.

    Room temperature phosphorescence in the longer-wavelength red-light region has attracted considerable interest owing to its development in biological imaging and sensing. However, red phosphorescence is highly limited because the phosphorescence color emitted from organic dyes has mostly been restricted to shorter-wavelengths in the blue, green, and yellow regions. Red phosphorescence is observed in an electron-accepting benzothiadiazole dye bearing a methoxy group and bromine atom in the crystal solid state. Although the benzothiadiazole dye has an inherent characteristic of phosphorescence in the monomeric state, the phosphorescence behavior in the crystalline solid state is assisted secondarily by aggregation through π⋯π interactions among benzothiadiazole moieties, C-H⋯O interactions among methoxy groups, and Br⋯Br interactions among bromine atoms. After the intersystem crossing accelerated by the heavy-atom effect of the introduced bromine atom, the given excited triplet state can be stabilized by these multiple intermolecular interactions, resulting in the restriction of the nonradiative channel and acceleration of the phosphorescence radiation. This red phosphorescence can be developed into other dyes bearing key electron-acceptor moieties, bromine atoms, and methoxy groups.

    A small photon energy loss (Eloss) is one of the requisites for achieving near-infrared (NIR) small-molecule organic solar cells (SM-OSCs). Herein, we present two novel pyrrolopyrrole aza-BODIPY (PPAB)-based panchromatic chromophores, TT-2PPAB and DFBT-2PPAB, with an acceptor-donor-acceptor configuration for photovoltaic studies. Among them, in combination with [6,6]-phenyl-C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) acceptor, TT-2PPAB exhibits a moderate power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.11% due to an Eloss of 0.48 eV, which is smaller than the empirical limit of 0.6 eV. Based on the electrochemistry and theoretical calculations, we revealed that the efficient photovoltaic performance of the TT-2PPAB-based device can be ascribed to the sufficiently deep LUMO level of TT-2PPAB for charge transfer to PC71BM.

教育活動概要

  • 工学府応用化学専攻において、協力講座として大学院教育を担当している。また、工学部応用化学科・機能コースの学部教育も担当している。大学院博士課程・修士課程の大学院生、および学部の卒業研究生に対する研究指導を行っている。研究室においては、大学院生および卒業研究生に対して個別の研究打合せ、実験および論文の指導、研究討論を実施している。
