Profile

固体高分子形燃料電池、水電解用の高分子電解質材料の開発を行っている。新しい概念を材料設計に組み込むことで、従来の材料が抱える様々な限界を超える材料の開発を実施している。主要な研究としては、電解質材料の気体の透過性に注目し、化学的耐久性を向上させるガスバリア性電解質膜の開発、発電性能を向上させる気体透過性イオノマーブレンドの開発、電解質材料に超分子化学的な相互作用を導入し、機能を調整する電荷移動錯体複合材料（CT材料）の開発、無機材料と高分子材料を組み合わせた吸水多孔質電解質材料の開発を行っている。教育としては、統合新領域オートモーティブサイエンス専攻にて、グローバルコースの学生向けにAutomotive Advanced Material ScienceとAutomotive Science and Engineeringを担当している。その他の活動として、水素エネルギーに関する講義を小学生から一般の方、海外からの訪問者に向け行っている。また学外でのイベントなどで広く水素エネルギーについて知ってもらうため、燃料電池自動車から電気を取り出し利用する水素エネルギーの活用法について解説を行っている。

Unique Pt/TaOx/MC cathode electrocatalysts for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) are developed using partially-reduced TaOx decorated on mesoporous carbon (MC). An initial mass activity (MA) of more than 500 A g−1 was observed for a TaOx/MC support heat treated at 700 °C in H2 or 1300 °C in Ar, more than double that of a conventional Pt/C electrocatalyst. The durability against start-stop and load potential cycling was successfully improved compared with the reference catalysts, as verified by half-cell voltammetry and full membrane-electrode-assembly (MEA) tests. Durability against start-stop cycling was attributed to the use of a thermochemically-stable TaOx support which prevents direct contact between Pt and MC, thus minimizing carbon corrosion. Durability against load cycling was mainly attributed to the mesoporous structure, preventing the agglomeration of Pt catalyst particles. As such, the Pt/TaOx/MC cathode electrocatalysts presented in this work have the potential to achieve both high durability and high power output, which is especially attractive for heavy-duty vehicular fuel cell applications.

System durability is crucial for the successful commercialization of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) in fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Besides conventional electrochemical cycling durability during long-term operation, the effect of operation in cold climates must also be considered. Ice formation during start up in sub-zero conditions may result in damage to the electrocatalyst layer and the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM). Here, we conduct accelerated cold start cycling tests on prototype fuel cell stacks intended for incorporation into commercial FCEVs. The effect of this on the stack performance is evaluated, the resulting mechanical damage is investigated, and degradation mechanisms are proposed. Overall, only a small voltage drop is observed after the durability tests, only minor damage occurs in the electrocatalyst layer, and no increase in gas crossover is observed. This indicates that these prototype fuel cell stacks successfully meet the cold start durability targets for automotive applications in FCEVs.

Decomposition of polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) by radical species is a significant issue related to the chemical durability of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). A major contributor to radical formation is the oxygen crossover through the membrane from cathode to anode. Therefore, suppression of oxygen diffusion through the PEM is predicted to effectively mitigate the chemical degradation via radical formation. To confirm this, a simple high oxygen barrier PEM is prepared by sandwiching a thin gas barrier interlayer in between two Nafion 211 membranes. The interlayer consists of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly (vinyl sulfonic acid) (PVS) with various molar ratio. The sandwich PEM can show 286 times lower oxygen permeability than Nafion 212 membrane, which corresponds to 1.7 times longer survival time than Nafion 212 in a chemically accelerated stress test for PEMs known as open circuit voltage (OCV) holding test. Furthermore, the SEM image of the sandwich PEM cross-section shows that the interlayer could survive the OCV holding test despite its lower resistance against radical attack. The results in this study indicate that the addition of high oxygen barrier interlayer can reduce radical formation in PEFC and improve chemical durability.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical element for all sorts of reactions that use water as a hydrogen source, such as hydrogen evolution and electrochemical CO2 reduction, and novel design principles that provide highly active sites on OER electrocatalysts push the limits of their practical applications. Herein, Au-cluster loading on unilamellar exfoliated layered double hydroxide (ULDH) electrocatalysts for the OER is demonstrated to fabricate a heterointerface between Au clusters and ULDHs as an active site, which is accompanied by the oxidation state modulation of the active site and interfacial direct O-O coupling (“interfacial DOOC”). The Au-cluster-loaded ULDHs exhibit excellent activities for the OER with an overpotential of 189 mV at 10 mA cm−2. X-ray absorption fine structure measurements reveal that charge transfer from the Au clusters to ULDHs modifies the oxidation states of trivalent metal ions, which can be active sites on the ULDHs. The present study, supported by highly sensitive spectroscopy combining reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy and modulation-excitation spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, indicates that active sites at the interface between the Au clusters and ULDHs promote a novel OER mechanism through interfacial DOOC, thereby achieving outstanding catalytic performance.

An advantage of polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) over other water electrolysis technologies is its ability to operate at high current densities. However, resistive heating during. In this study, the internal cell temperature distribution at high current densities up to 12 A cm-2 is evaluated through numerical simulation. The correlation between the temperature gradient in the cell and the flow rate of water supplied is examined. An increase in water supply is effective in minimizing high temperature gradients at higher current densities.

Platinum-based nanoparticles decorated on carbon supports (Pt/C) are widely used as electrocatalysts in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). Meanwhile, SnO2 is more stable than carbon at high potentials in cathodic environments. Highly durable Pt/SnO2/C electrocatalysts have therefore previously been developed using carbon nanomaterials as an electron-conducting backbone and SnO2 as a stable support layer for highly dispersed platinum nanoparticles. Here, we report on the development of Pt/SnO2/C electrocatalysts based on mesoporous carbon (MC) scaffolds. The electron conduction pathway through SnO2 was minimized by reducing the SnO2 loading. The use of Pt/SnO2/MC electrocatalysts resulted in high activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as well as excellent start-stop voltage cycling durability in half-cell conditions.

The durability of conventional Pt/C catalysts is still an important technical issue for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). SnO2-supported electrocatalysts with carbon materials as electronic conductive frameworks have the potential to achieve both high catalytic activity and high durability against carbon support corrosion. However, it is still necessary to optimize cell preparation conditions to improve electrochemical cell performance especially in the high current density range. Here, PEFCs with such electrocatalysts are prepared by varying the preparation conditions of the catalyst layer in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and a combination of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) and sealant thicknesses. Microstructural optimization is still needed for improving cell performance and minimizing overvoltages.

Significant improvement in the durability of polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) electrocatalysts is essential for heavy-duty applications. Carbon-based supports suffer from carbon corrosion during start-stop potential cycles, leading to Pt detachment. Load cycles can also cause degradation mainly associated with Pt dissolution/re-deposition. Here, nanocomposite electrocatalysts with Pt and SnO2 decorated on mesoporous carbon (MC) are prepared for improvement of start-stop and load-cycle durability. These nanocomposite electrocatalysts are found to be deposited within the mesopores of the MC support. It is demonstrated by half-cell tests that such electrocatalysts exhibit a high durability for potential changes simulating start-stop and load-cycles.

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells convert hydrogen to electricity, heat, and water, and will help decrease CO2 emissions. However, they are expensive because of the platinum electrocatalyst. Cheaper catalysts based on nanostructured iron-decorated nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe-N-C) are being developed. Their performance is improving, but fundamental questions remain. Here we focus on two: i) How do Fe-N-C catalysts form during synthesis; and ii) How do they degrade during operation? These will be answered using advanced in-situ techniques at high temperature or during electrochemical tests.
