Abstract

This study did five surveys between April 2020 and March 2021 to look at how lifestyle changes during the pandemic affected well-being. These surveys covered all of Japan and were done both before and after the state of emergency was lifted. Applying the fixed-effects method to the panel data acquired in this manner, the analysis focused on subjective well-being and behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that teleworking during the pandemic may have increased life satisfaction, especially among young people. Although self-restraint behavior reduced well-being among young people, it tended to increase well-being among elderly individuals. On the other hand, self-restraint behavior by partners was found to lead to a decline in well-being among elderly individuals. In addition, it was observed that both the declaration of a state of emergency and the infection status had minimal impact on life satisfaction and happiness across all generational groups. Thus, the results show that lifestyle changes during the pandemic did not necessarily harm well-being, suggesting that the positive or negative impacts of factors differ from generation to generation.

    Abstract

    Background

Seasonality is an important aspect of food security for subsistence households in developing countries. Among the multidimensional aspects of food security, this paper focuses on how unexpected negative harvest shocks would affect the seasonal food consumption of households. This is particularly important because, with the increasing threat of climate change, the frequency of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods is expected to increase; this would adversely affect crop yields.

    Methods

Given seasonal price changes of staple foods, some households buy them when prices are low and store them for the hunger season (not buy high (NBH) households), while others run out of staple foods before the next harvest and therefore buy them when prices are high (buy high (BH) households). Using three years of weekly household panel data for the Choma and Sinazongwe Districts of the southern province of Zambia, we assess the ability of seasonal consumption smoothing separately for NBH and BH households.

    Results

NBH households successfully smooth their consumption over the 12 months of the crop year. In contrast, BH households, especially for households with few assets, reduce total consumption in response to harvest shocks, just after the harvest and during the “hunger season” just before the next harvest. However, in spite of this, the consumption of staple foods is generally insensitive to harvest shocks. Instead, they reduce consumption only of non-staple food items, such as vegetables and meats.

    Conclusions

Seasonal food insecurity is exacerbated by negative harvest shocks. We emphasize the significance of policies aimed at increasing public awareness of healthier food choices, empowering households to avoid purchasing maize at high prices, and reducing seasonal price disparities.

  • Improvement impact of nudges incorporated in environmental education on students’ environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors Reviewed International journal

This study conducted randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of an environmental education class and the impacts of nudges and boosts implemented in this program on high school students' basic knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding environmental issues in Japan. This environmental education class consisted of a lecture on reducing the use of plastic products for energy conservation in daily life, a board game for learning how to reduce plastic waste, and a worksheet for reflection. Four types of worksheets were randomly distributed: nudges, in which students were asked to set a goal regarding their level of effort in not throwing away plastic products such as plastic bags, wet wipes, and plastic bottles; boosts, in which participants were asked to write an essay to help increase their empathy for the parties impacted by environmental issues; both nudges and boosts; and none (neither nudges nor boosts). After environmental education, an end-line survey was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this class. This study found that the environmental education class significantly improved students' basic environmental knowledge and promoted their concerns about plastic waste. Although there was no evidence that nudges and boosts amplify the effects of the environmental education class on the students' knowledge, nudges were successful in making them more concerned about plastic waste. The results showed that students who received nudges or boosts were more likely to refuse free wet wipes offered at convenience stores but were not more likely to refuse plastic bottles. These results also indicated that interventions through environmental education can change students' pro-environmental behaviors only if the cost of behavioral change is low. The environmental education class not only increased students’ environmental knowledge and attitudes, but the use of worksheets in administering nudges and boosts ensured the effectiveness of environmental education.

This study investigated the short-term and long-term impact of nudging and boosting within an environmental education program on students' environmental attitudes and energy-saving actions. We conducted a randomized assignment across primary and junior high schools, employing four study settings: board game-based environmental education without nudges or boosts (control); with nudges (setting energy-saving goals in a reflection session); with boosts (a game with a “tragedy of the commons” setting); and with both nudges and boosts. In the game with the “tragedy of the commons” setting, the specification was that pursuing self-interest would harm those of the entire group as well as one's own interests; the aim was to enhance environmental literacy by conveying the importance of cooperation through information. We found that students subjected to the boost became significantly more environmentally conscious in the game and set more goals in the goal-setting nudge task. A follow-up survey was conducted one- and three-months post-intervention. This revealed that students in the nudge-and-boost group, who set higher goals, displayed increased awareness of energy conservation, improved environmental attitudes, and greater adoption of energy-saving practices relative to the control group. The results suggest that combining nudges with boosts sustains the long-term effects of environmental education.

Wetlands, which are unique water environments, have various functions for water circulation and ecosystems, such as mitigating disasters such as floods and providing habitats for wetland creatures. On the other hand, there are many areas where part of the wetlands overlaps with the human residential area, and it has undergone various changes depending on the wetlands, such as being the target of development and disappearing, or being protected as a conservation area for rare creatures or a target area for tourism promotion. In this presentation, we will apply the interdisciplinary framework, which captures changes in the water environment from the perspective of fluctuations in the geosphere, the humanosphere, and the biosphere, to the discussion on solar power generation in the Kushiro Wetlands, and will demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework.
