Outline Activities
In recent years, the use of fossil fuels such as coal and oil has been reconsidered due to the international trend towards a decarbonised society. It is therefore expected that fossil fuels will be increasingly used not as fuels but as raw materials for functional carbon materials. A particular problem is that their residues are inexpensive but have very limited applications. Carbon fibre composites have high specific strength and modulus, and if 17% of the metal parts of a car body were substituted, it would be possible to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50 tonnes per decade per car. However, the high production costs of polyacrylonitrile carbon fibre, which is currently the mainstream material, make it difficult to reduce these costs. However, it is difficult to reduce the production cost of polyacrylonitrile carbon fibre, which is currently the mainstream material, because of its high production cost. Therefore, we are conducting research to establish a method to reduce the production cost of medium-strength general-purpose pitch-based carbon fibre derived from petroleum and coal residues.
