The integration of multiphoton absorption phenomenon (MPA) with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials opens new avenues for bio-optoelectronic applications. However, the development of TADF emitters that simultaneously exhibit triplet harvesting and MPA is hindered by the challenge of balancing molecular planarity, reduced orbital overlap, and large oscillator strength. In this study, we demonstrate a quadrupolar molecular design based on the tetrabenzo[a,c]phenazine (TBPZ) to accomplish efficient MPA and TADF performance. Two new TADF emitters, TBPZ2TPA and TBPZ2NP, were synthesized, featuring an electron-accepting TBPZ core and electron-donating triarylamine (TAA) units to achieve an optimal balance between TADF and MPA characteristics. Particularly, TBPZ2TPA blended film exhibits orange-red emission with a maximum at 589 nm, a high photoluminescence quantum yield (Ф<inf>PL</inf>) of 71%, a sufficiently small singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE<inf>ST</inf>) of 0.16 eV and reversed intersystem crossing rate (k<inf>RISC</inf>) of 1.3 × 104 s−1. Furthermore, it demonstrated a remarkable two-photon absorption (2PA) cross-section (σ<inf>2</inf>) of 892 GM at 780 nm and an excellent 2PA brightness of 785 GM, along with evident three-photon absorption (3PA) at 1200 nm. These results provide a compelling strategy for developing high-performance TADF emitters with exceptional MPA properties, enabling dual functionality for both OLEDs and high-resolution bioimaging.

    Abstract

Optochemistry, an emerging pharmacologic approach in which light is used to selectively activate or deactivate molecules, has the potential to alleviate symptoms, cure diseases, and improve quality of life while preventing uncontrolled drug effects. The development of in-vivo applications for optochemistry to render brain cells photoresponsive without relying on genetic engineering has been progressing slowly. The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is a region for the regulation of slow-wave sleep (SWS) through the integration of motivational stimuli. Adenosine emerges as a promising candidate molecule for activating indirect pathway neurons of the NAc expressing adenosine A2A receptors (A2ARs) to induce SWS. Here, we developed a brain-permeable positive allosteric modulator of A2ARs (A2AR PAM) that can be rapidly photoactivated with visible light (λ > 400 nm) and used it optoallosterically to induce SWS in the NAc of freely behaving male mice by increasing the activity of extracellular adenosine derived from astrocytic and neuronal activity.

    Abstract

Photoremovable protecting groups (PPGs) represent one of the main contemporary implementations of photochemistry in diverse fields of research and practical applications. For the past half century, organic and metal-complex PPGs were considered mutually exclusive classes, each of which provided unique sets of physical and chemical properties thanks to their distinctive structures. Here, we introduce the meso-methylporphyrin group as a prototype hybrid-class PPG that unites traditionally exclusive elements of organic and metal-complex PPGs within a single structure. We show that the porphyrin scaffold allows extensive modularity by functional separation of the metal-binding chromophore and up to four sites of leaving group release. The insertion of metal ions can be used to tune their spectroscopic, photochemical, and biological properties. We provide a detailed description of the photoreaction mechanism studied by steady-state and transient absorption spectroscopies and quantum-chemical calculations. Our approach applied herein could facilitate access to a hitherto untapped chemical space of potential PPG scaffolds.

    Abstract

The pursuit of highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters with two‐photon absorption (2PA) character is hampered by the concurrent achievement of a small singlet‐triplet energy gap (ΔEST) and high photoluminescence quantum yield (ΦPL). Here, by introducing a terephthalonitrile unit into a sterically crowded donor‐π‐donor structure, inducing a hybrid electronic excitation character, we designed unique TADF emitters possessing 2PA ability. This rational molecular design was achieved through a main π‐conjugated donor‐acceptor‐donor backbone in line with locally excited feature renders a large oscillator strength and transition dipole moment, maintaining a high 2PA cross‐section value. The ancillary N‐donor‐acceptor‐donor with charge transfer character highly balances the TADF phenomenon by minimizing ΔEST. A near‐unity ΦPL value with a large radiative decay rate over an order of magnitude higher than the intersystem crossing rate and a high horizontal orientation ratio of 0.95 were simultaneously attained for TPCz2NP. The organic light‐emitting diodes fabricated with this material exhibit a high maximum external quantum efficiency of 25.4 % with an elevated 2PA cross‐section (σ2) value up to 143 GM at 850 nm. These findings offer a venue for designing high‐performance TADF emitters with exceptional performance inclusive of 2PA properties, expanding for future functional material design.

    Abstract

In recent decades, various types of aryl-substituted 1,3,5-triazine derivatives have been applied in many research fields, including biomedical chemistry, non-linear optics, and organic electronics. However, the substituent scope for 4,6-diaryl-1,3,5-triazines (DAr-TRZs) remains limited. Here, we present our work on the synthesis of 2-amino- and 2-bromo-DAr-TRZ derivatives bearing electron-withdrawing groups on the aryl rings. Our synthetic methods successfully provided trifluoromethyl-, nitrile-, and nitro-substituted DAr-TRZs. These will expand the structural diversity of conventional triazine-based functional materials.

    Abstract

Photon‐upconversion in organic molecular systems is one of the promising technologies for future energy harvesting systems because these systems can generate excitons that possess higher energy than excitation energy. The photon‐upconversion caused by absorbing ambient heat as additional energy is particularly interesting because it could ideally provide a light‐driving cooling system. However, only a few organic molecular systems have been reported. Here, we report the anti‐Stokes photoluminescence (ASPL) derived from hot‐band absorption in a series of multi‐resonance‐type thermally‐activated delayed fluorescence (MR‐TADF) molecules. The MR‐TADF molecules exhibited an anti‐Stokes shift of approximately 0.1 eV with a high PL quantum yield in the solution state. The anti‐Stokes shift corresponded well to the 1–0 vibration transition from the ground state to the excited singlet state, and we further evaluated a correlation between the activation energy for the ASPL intensity and the TADF process. Our demonstration underlines that MR‐TADF molecules have become a novel class of ASPL materials for various future applications, such as light‐driving cooling systems.

We demonstrate the design and synthesis of pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines (PIqs) bearing electron-withdrawing groups, which are excited under irradiation with visible light to display wider redox windows and higher triplet-state energies. The photophysical and electrochemical characters of PIqs can be tailored by modification of the electron-withdrawing groups and their positions, enabling redox-neutral (hetero)biaryl cross-coupling between aryl halides and (hetero)arenes, nickel-catalyzed amination and oxygenation of aryl halides, and decarboxylative cross-coupling between α-amino acids and aryl halides, as well as a set of molecular transformations driven by triplet-triplet sensitization under irradiation with visible light.

In this study, we developed a Donor-π-Donor (D-π-D) based coumarin derivative. Its two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-section was determined to be 498 GM at 700 nm by two-photon excited fluorescence method. The two-photon uncaging efficiency of D-π-D based caged benzoic acid was also determined to be 134 GM at 700 nm, which indicates relatively high two-photon responsive chromophore. In addition, we investigated the detail mechanism of bond cleavage steps in the uncaging reaction of caged benzoic acid. The laser flash photolysis experiments and product analysis suggested the presence of methyl cation intermediate which indicated the heterolysis of C-O bond.
