|
I learned how to develop hydrogels for drug delivery and treatment of degenerative diseases under the supervision of Prof. Kang Moo Huh earlier in my graduate training. This experience solidified my intention to pursue a career in biomaterial design. To achieve this goal, I decided to pursue a Ph.D. with Prof. Tooru Ooya. Here, I learned how to perform molecular design of advanced materials, organic synthesis of biocompatible compounds, and characterization of physical properties of biomaterials. I also have 3 years of postdoctoral fellow experience at the University of Illinois at Chicago in Prof. Jae-Won Shin’s group. Since joining Dr. Shin’s group, I have been learning new skills to improve mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC)-based therapeutics by biomaterial design in the context of tissue regeneration and fibrosis. Currently, at Kyushu University, I am exploring in a study to investigate how a novel biomaterial affects stem cell behavior, particularly with regards to morphology and differentiation. The study aims to explore how the intermediate water can be regulated by the biomaterial while keeping other factors such as elastic modulus and surface topology. This research has potential applications in fields such as tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and drug discovery.

Educational Activities
I have been guiding one of our lab students in terms of research and experiment activities. I am teaching students how to set up the experiment and how to present the work. Since their experiment activities are the first time, I am trying to teach from the very beginning. For example, how to find the paper, how to build up the idea, how to brainstorming, how to set up the experiment, and how to analysis data. It is also important to find a solution to the problem. If the student found the issue, then I am trying to teach them how to solve the problem. Also, it is important to find the previous research, therefore, I am teaching student how to find the previous research and paper so that we can find out the way to pursue our research.

Professional and Outreach Activities
My academic journey has spanned across three different countries—Korea, Japan, and the United States—which has bestowed upon me a unique advantage in creating new records of outline of activities involving social contribution or international collaboration. In this essay, I will elaborate on how my educational background and research experiences in these diverse cultural contexts have enriched my understanding of social dynamics, fostered a global perspective, and equipped me with the skills necessary to make a meaningful impact in social contribution and international collaboration. Throughout my academic journey, I have cultivated a vast network of colleagues, mentors, and collaborators across Korea, Japan, and the United States. This expansive international network presents immense opportunities for forging partnerships and collaborative initiatives aimed at social contribution and international collaboration. Leveraging these connections, I can bring together experts from different disciplines, institutions, and countries to address complex societal challenges. The diverse perspectives and expertise within my network enable cross-cultural exchange, the sharing of best practices, and the co-creation of innovative solutions, enhancing the impact of our collective efforts..
