研究については、統語論、特に、日英語の削除現象やカートグラフィーの研究を行っている。
教育については、学部では、統語論の基礎概念や日英語の様々な統語現象を紹介し、大学院では、様々な統語事実の提示と、その言語事実についての古典的分析から最新の分析までの情報共有、それらに基づく議論を行っている。

統語論研究において、移動現象や削除現象における空所（発音しない箇所）がどのように認可されるのかという問いは重要な研究課題である。さらに、近年の統語論研究では、空所の生成と認可条件について移動と削除を関連付けながら分析する研究が活発化している。このような関連付けは、①移動も削除も可能/②不可能というように、移動と削除の平行性がある言語事実については説得力があるが、③移動は不可能だが削除は可能、④移動は可能だが削除は不可能という言語事実も存在する。そのため、本研究では、様々な移動現象や削除現象についての実証的研究を行い、①―④のパターンを包括的に説明できる空所の認可条件を提案することを試みる。

生成文法の枠組みにおいては「移動現象」を扱う研究が理論の発展を牽引してきた。ここで「移動」の有無を確かめる手段として広く採用されてきたのが「島の効果」である。ところが近年、移動が関与していると思われる構文において、この島の効果が見られない場合が報告されている。本研究では、Chomsky (2017)が提唱する大併合（MERGE）に基づくミニマリストプログラムの枠組みにおいて、「島の効果」を示さない場合について、先行研究の問題点を指摘し、その統語的な特性を明らかにした上で、新たな付加構造構築のメカニズム及びその操作に係る条件を提唱する。

主語の構造的位置に関しては生成文法の理論的枠組みにおいて様々に論じられてきたが、顕在的な（派生）位置に関しては、言語、構文により様々な提案があるものの、いまだに十分に解決されていない。本研究は、日・英語を中心に主語の構造的位置と、それに伴うラベリングと格付与のメカニズムの解明を行うものである。特に、Chomsky (2013, 2015)が提唱するラベリングアルゴリズム(LA)の予測に反すると思われる主語位置について格、省略、移動、節の定形性、方言データ、ならびに幼児の言語獲得データに基づき考察し、主語の位置を確定すると同時にその背後にある理論的根拠を探求する。

The aims of this project are (i) to clarify that ellipsis changes the meaning of a sentence, and (ii) to research on the underlying phonological, semantic, and/or syntactic mechanisms of such meaning change under ellipsis. For the first purpose, I examined various elliptical constructions in Japanese and English, including Argument Ellipsis, Verb-Echo Answers, and Particle-Stranding Ellipsis, and clarified that scopes of quantifiers and negation may be different in the elliptical sentences. I attribute the scope change to syntactic movement mechanisms such as head movement and quantifier raising, thereby suggesting that phonological deletion analysis might be a more suitable analysis for ellipsis.

The current study clarified the syntactic and semantic properties of logical connectives, in particular disjunction in Japanese. We reported that Japanese disjunction exhibits rescuing effects, based on data from the Kumamoto Hichiku dialect, which allows two types of nominative subject: one in vP and the other in TP. This finding shows that Japanese disjunction is a positive polarity item, and no syntactic movement plays any crucial role in determining its scope domain. We also investigated the function of the Focus feature in Agree operation, examining the relationship between focus and ellipsis, and showed that the complex of the Focus feature and the (genitive) Case feature activates the Ellipsis feature. Likewise, the complex of the Focus feature and the potential suffix licenses nominative object.

本研究は、言語における焦点化の統語的メカニズムとそれが関係している様々な文法現象を最新の生成文法理論（カートグラフィ、フェイズ、ラベリング）の枠組みで考察した。そして、焦点化がフェイズの周辺領域とどのようにかかわるのかを詳細に探究し、焦点化に関わる構造の精緻化とメカニズムを実証的に分析して、現象の解明と文法理論構築に寄与した。また、焦点化の働きの違いから、否定の作用域等の日英語の言語間の違いが導出できることを示した。
