研究については、統語論、特に、日英語の削除現象やカートグラフィーの研究を行っている。 教育については、学部では、統語論の基礎概念や日英語の様々な統語現象を紹介し、大学院では、様々な統語事実の提示と、その言語事実についての古典的分析から最新の分析までの情報共有、それらに基づく議論を行っている。

  • The Comparative Syntax of Evidential Markers in Korean and Japanese: A Cartographic Perspective

    The cartographic project, initiated by Rizzi (1997, 2004, 2013) and Cinque (1999, 2004, 2006), among others, aims to provide a detailed map of clause structure for human language. The core proposal is that the traditional TP and CP consist of a hierarchy of functional projections that is supposed to be universal across languages. Recently, building on Cinque (2004), An (2022a) shows that evidential markers in Korean and Italian, namely, pota and sembrare, manifest a significant parallelism despite the fact that the languages in question are typologically unrelated, which he argues provides support for the cartographic approach. In this paper, building on An (2022a), we turn to two typologically related languages, namely, Korean and Japanese, and investigate how their evidential markers, namely, pota, -tay, and two types of sooda, behave. We explore the similarities and differences among these elements and discuss the implications of their status as TP-internal and TP-external functional categories. We argue that comparing the elements in question not only allows us to better understand their properties but also helps us be more precise about the cartographic hierarchy of the languages in question.

    This paper focuses on clausal ellipsis, in particular sluicing and stripping, in Japanese. In the literature, two derivational options have been proposed for Japanese sluicing: (I) the movement of the remnant, followed by TP-deletion (Takahashi in J East Asian Linguist 3: 265–300, 1994), and (II) the deletion of the presuppositional clause of the cleft construction (Saito in Nanzan Linguist 1: 21–50, 2004). The mixed properties of sluicing suggest that Japanese sluicing has multiple derivational sources. This paper argues for this hybrid approach to sluicing, by examining another and yet-unnoticed type of clausal ellipsis: the stripping construction that includes a wh-remnant with focus interpretation. We argue that wh-stripping also has multiple derivational sources, namely, focus movement of the remnant wh-phrase followed by TP-deletion and the cleft construction, as in the case of sluicing. By examining negative polarity items, islands, and quantifier scope interactions, we show that wh-stripping in Japanese exhibits mixed syntactic properties, and we put forth our proposal that this makes it hard to narrow down its derivational path to a single construction.

    統語論研究において、移動現象や削除現象における空所（発音しない箇所）がどのように認可されるのかという問いは重要な研究課題である。さらに、近年の統語論研究では、空所の生成と認可条件について移動と削除を関連付けながら分析する研究が活発化している。このような関連付けは、①移動も削除も可能/②不可能というように、移動と削除の平行性がある言語事実については説得力があるが、③移動は不可能だが削除は可能、④移動は可能だが削除は不可能という言語事実も存在する。そのため、本研究では、様々な移動現象や削除現象についての実証的研究を行い、①―④のパターンを包括的に説明できる空所の認可条件を提案することを試みる。

    生成文法の枠組みにおいては「移動現象」を扱う研究が理論の発展を牽引してきた。ここで「移動」の有無を確かめる手段として広く採用されてきたのが「島の効果」である。ところが近年、移動が関与していると思われる構文において、この島の効果が見られない場合が報告されている。本研究では、Chomsky (2017)が提唱する大併合（MERGE）に基づくミニマリストプログラムの枠組みにおいて、「島の効果」を示さない場合について、先行研究の問題点を指摘し、その統語的な特性を明らかにした上で、新たな付加構造構築のメカニズム及びその操作に係る条件を提唱する。

  • 学部の講義では、統語論の基礎概念と様々な統語事実を紹介している。大学院の講義では、様々な統語事実を提示し、その事実についての古典分析から最新の分析に至るまでの分析の紹介、それらの分析の問題点についての議論を行っている。また、大学院では、生成文法の論文、本を題材にした演習も行っている。また、学部、院ともに個別に研究指導を行っている。
