The morphology of the metathorax of brachyceran Diptera is examined, particularly the metapleuron in the superfamily Syrphoidea comprising two families Syrphidae and Pipunculidae. The homologies of the metepisternum (EPS) and metepimeron (EPM) are redefined based on the metapleural suture (PlS), which bears an internal apophysis. A new interpretation of the metathorax is provided for Syrphidae. Members of Schizophora and Pipunculidae have an articulation between EPM and the first abdominal tergite in common and the (metapleural-abdominal) articulation is indicated as a synapomorphy for them. In some species of Syrphidae the well-developed metapostnotum is articulated with the first abdominal tergite and the (metapostnotal-abdominal) articulation is diagnostic of a subgroup of the family. The articulations are evaluated and discussed with respect to abdominal flexion of Diptera.

Members of the genus Exorista are parasitoids of a diverse array of insect hosts in the orders, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Mantodea and Orthoptera. Phylogenetic relationships among subgenera and species of Exorista were inferred using four nuclear (Tpi, white, 18S and 28S) and four mitochondrial DNA (16S, 12S, ND5 and CO1) genes in maximum parsimony (MP), maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analyses. Separate trees based on different sets of genes (mt DNA, nuclear, ribosomal etc.) were compared and found to be nearly concordant. According to the molecular tree generated from the concatenated sequence data, the genus Exorista is paraphyletic. The phylogenetic analyses indicate the existence of two major clades of Exorista, including two genera Parasetigena and Phorocera. Morphological traits supporting clades indicated by molecular analyses within this genus are evaluated. Evolutionary patterns of the host use and host shifts are examined by optimizing host information using maximum likelihood on the molecular phylogeny. The ancestral host group of the tribe Exoristini (excluding Ctenophorinia and Phorinia) appears to be the order Lepidoptera, although hosts of some species are unknown. A major host shift to the Hymenoptera occurred in the clade of subgenus Adenia, and the ancestral state of subgenus Spixomyia is equivocal because there is little information available on the hosts in members of a subclade of this group (subclade A: E. hyalipennis group).

Five Exorista species from Malaysia and Indonesia are treated and diagnostic characters of the male postabdomen are illustrated. Three of them are described as new: Exorista globosa sp. nov., E. flaviventris sp. nov. and E. sabahensis sp. nov. Phylogenetic analysis is performed with morphological data used in the previous study of Tachi & Shima (2008) along with the five species treated here. Based on the generated tree, the five species treated here are assigned to Spixomyia Crosskey. Exorista ladelli (Baranov) is transferred to Spixomyia from the subgenus Podotachina Brauer and Bergenstamm. Evolutionary patterns of host use in the genus Exorista Meigen are discussed. Host information is optimized on the resultant tree under the most parsimonious reconstruction. The original host of the tribe Exoristini (except Ctenophorinia Mesnil and Phorinia Robineau-Desvoidy) was order Lepidoptera, and transitions to other orders (Hymenoptera, Mantodea and Orthoptera) occurred in subgenera Adenia Robineau-Desvoidy and Spixomyia, respectively.

In this study a new genus of the tribe Blondeliini, Shimamyia, is established. In this genus, Shimamyia exigua comb. nov., S. orientalis comb. nov., S. taiwanensis sp. nov., and S. vietnamensis sp. nov. are described and the key to species is provided. Shimamyia exigua and S. orientalis were initially identified as members of Medinodexia Townsend but were thought to belong to an undescribed genus based on external morphology and male and female postabdomens. The present study provides comprehensive descriptions of the four species. The phylogenetic tree reconstructed from 27 blondeliine species (including two from Shimamyia) and 6 outgroup using 16S, 28S, white, and CAD genes is also provided to discuss the placement of Shimamyia. Morphological and molecular evidence support the differentiation of Shimamyia from Medinodexia while confirming its inclusion in Blondeliini. Additionally, the modified female postabdomens of the new genus and other Blondeliini members are briefly discussed.

The rice stink bug, Niphe elongata (Dallas, 1851) is one of the serious pests in Japan that suck rice ears causing decreased yields and pecky rice. Despite the need for information on its useful natural enemies for biological control, very few data have been collected. In the course of our study, two species of parasitic flies, Clairvilliops sp. and Euthera tuckeri Bezzi, 1925, have emerged from adult rice stink bugs collected by sweeping in a paddy field in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. This is the new host record of these parasitic flies. We provide some information on the point of identification of two species, collected site, and the date of emergence.

In internal parasitism, the respiration strategy within the host's body is as essential as evading attack from the host's immune system. Tachinid flies are parasitoids of terrestrial arthropods, mostly insects, during their larval stage. To obtain oxygen while living in the host body, they build a cylindrical structure known as the respiratory funnel at the aperture opened by the tachinid larva on the host integument or trachea. These funnels can be divided morphologically into sheath and cone types. Previous research on sheath-type funnels revealed that they are derived from the encapsulating substance produced by the host's immune system. In contrast, the cone-type funnels cover part of the body of the larval tachinid and may be constructed independently from the host immune system. To determine the mechanisms of cone-type funnel formation, histological observations were carried out on Gymnosoma rotundatum (L.) (Diptera: Tachinidae), which possesses this type of funnel. The respiratory funnel of G. rotundatum was found to be derived from the tube-shaped faeces wrapped with the peritrophic membrane and excreted by the fly larva, not from host tissue or haemocytes. Additionally, secretory glands putatively involved in the funnel formation were discovered around the larval anal plate of G. rotundatum. A comparison of funnel types within Tachinidae revealed that Phasiinae and Dexiinae have cone-type funnels, which may be created by the same mechanism as in G. rotundatum. These new findings suggest that funnel formation that does not use the host immune system is relevant to tachinid phylogeny.

High pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) poses a significant threat to both domestic and wild birds globally. The avian influenza virus, known for environmental contamination and subsequent oral infection in birds, necessitates careful consideration of alternative introduction routes during HPAI outbreaks. This study focuses on blowflies (genus Calliphora), in particular Calliphora nigribarbis, attracted to decaying animals and feces, which migrate to lowland areas of Japan from northern or mountainous regions in early winter, coinciding with HPAI season. Our investigation aims to delineate the role of blowflies as HPAI vectors by conducting a virus prevalence survey in a wild bird HPAI-enzootic area. In December 2022, 648 Calliphora nigribarbis were collected. Influenza virus RT-PCR testing identified 14 virus-positive samples (2.2% prevalence), with the highest occurrence observed near the crane colony (14.9%). Subtyping revealed the presence of H5N1 and HxN1 in some samples. Subsequent collections in December 2023 identified one HPAI virus-positive specimen from 608 collected flies in total, underscoring the potential involvement of blowflies in HPAI transmission. Our observations suggest C. nigribarbis may acquire the HPAI virus from deceased wild birds directly or from fecal materials from infected birds, highlighting the need to add blowflies as a target of HPAI vector control.

Medinodexia japonica sp. nov. is described from Japan and an adult leaf beetle, Aulacophora nigripennis Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is recorded as its host. A piercing-type ovipositor is one of the characteristics of the genus Medinodexia Townsend, but it is also found in other blondeliine genera. To evaluate the structural differences of the piercing-type ovipositor, the female postabdominal characters were examined within Blondeliini and their phylogenetic implications are briefly discussed. Females of Medinodexia are similar to those of Medina Robineau-Desvoidy for the presence of invaginations on tergite 6 and sternite 6 of the abdomen. Medinodexia exigua Shima and M. orientalis Shima are not treated here, because they are considered to belong to an undescribed genus due to differences in the male and female postabdominal characters distinguishing them from the remaining species of Medinodexia.

A piercing-type ovipositor of the female postabdomen occurs in some genera of Blondellini (e.g., Blondelia Robineau-Desvoidy, Celatoria Coquillett and Medinodexia Townsend). Wood (1985, Mem. Ent. Soc. Can. 132: 1-130) used this feature in the couplet of the generic key to the Blondeliini to include the following genera: Blondelia, Celatoria, Compsilura Bouché, Eucelatoria Townsend, Proroglutea Townsend, and Vibrissina Rondani. The piercer is a modification of the female abdominal sternite 7 (Herting 1956, Z. Morph. Ökol. Tiere 45: 429-461). Molecular data indicated that the piercing ovipositor evolved independently in Blondelia-group (sense Tschorsnig 1985, Stuttg. Beitr. Naturk. A. 383: 1-137) and Medinodexia (Tachi & Shima 2010, Syst. Ent. 35: 148-163). In this study we examine the morphological features of the piercing ovipositor of Blondeliini, particularly an invagination of the abdominal segment. We discuss the phylogenetic implications in Blondeliini phylogeny.

The Tachinidae are parasitoids of insects and other arthropods and are one of the largest families of Diptera. Several reproductive strategies beyond the typical direct oviparity have been adopted by tachinids to parasitize their hosts. The Exoristinae, one of the four subfamilies of Tachinidae, have diverse morphological characters and female reproductive habits. In particular, oviparity, ovolarviparity and micro-ovolarviparity are known in this subfamily. We inferred the phylogenetic relationships among genera and tribes of Exoristinae using 4 genes (white, 18S, 28S and 16S rDNA), and evaluated the transformation of female oviposition strategy of the Exoristinae on the resulting phylogeny (Tachi & Shima, 2010). However, the evolutionary history of the micro-ovolarviparity was not well-resolved due to the unclear relationships of the Eryciini.
Here, we revise our understanding of the phylogenetic relationships within Exoristinae by adding taxa and genes to the previous dataset. In particular, the placement of the oviparous genus Aplomya Robineau-Desvoidy was examined. The transformation of the female reproductive system of the Exoristinae was re-analyzed based on the generated tree. It indicates as follows: 1) oviparity is the primitive state. 2) ovolarviparity has independently evolved in multiple clades. 3) The Goniini are monophyletic and their female reproductive system (micro-ovolarviparity) originated from one of the ovolarviparous clades. However, we also provide evidence that micro-ovolarviparity may have evolved multiple times.
