    ABSTRACT

    This study examined the impact of the state‐level inheritance rights reforms in India, which granted women the right to inherit joint family property, on the years of education and real wages of female wage earners. The reforms targeted Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists. Data from seven rounds of the Employment and Unemployment Survey (1983–2011/2012) from the Indian National Sample Survey were analyzed using difference‐in‐differences (DID). The treatment group comprised women who lived in the four reformed states (Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra) and were young at the time of the reforms. Our findings demonstrate that within the subsample of female regular workers, the increase in years of education for the women exposed to the reforms was not statistically significant. Nevertheless, this group experienced a wage increase of around 15% after controlling for their education levels. This increase may be attributed to improvements in the quality of human capital that are not directly observable in the data. Placebo regression with a sample of other religious groups (Muslims and Christians) and DID with propensity score matching confirmed the robustness of our results. Nevertheless, the impact of the reform on the casual wage laborer remains ambiguous.

    Using five-period repeated cross-sectional data from the Indian National Family Health Survey, this study examines the impact of inheritance rights reforms on the human capital of Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists. The results demonstrate that, in the reform states, Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist daughters of landholding household heads (the treatment group) improved their human capital indicators of education (years of education) and their health status (underweight and BMI z-score). There is also some indication that their reading habits might have improved compared to the control group. In contrast, the human capital indicators of the placebo group—Muslims and Christians, who share similar characteristics with the treatment group but were not subject to the reform—showed no clear improvements. Estimates based on reform timing show that Karnataka and Maharashtra, which were reformed in 1994, have contributed the most to the main result. The results provide evidence for the human capital-enhancing impact of inheritance reforms for women.

    本研究では、南アジア(特にインド)における相続権改革や遺産動機などの世代間移転の変化に着目し、人々の宗教と経済行動がどのように影響しあっているのかを明らかにすることを試みる。具体的には、(1)宗教や価値観が経済パフォーマンスに与える影響、(2)インドにおける相続権改革が女性の収入に与える影響、(3)経済発展や社会全体の変化が、慣習や世帯内での意思決定に与えた影響などを、地域や宗教、民族、カースト間の異質性を踏まえてそれぞれ明らかにすることを目的とする。既存の調査データを用いた実証分析だけではなく、独自の質問票による調査・分析や寺院や農村でのフィールドワークを研究成果に繋げる予定である。

    The main outcome of this research project is a study that significantly revised and expanded a portion of my doctoral dissertation, which was published as a peer-reviewed article in Volume 70, Issue 1 of "Asian Studies." This study elucidated how the wage gap structure between Hindu Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and Muslims has changed, and identified the factors contributing to the wage gap between the two groups. Additionally, I have a bulletin paper on religion and the economics of religion in India, and an English paper on the reform of inheritance law and its impact on human capital, which is currently under peer review.
    <BR>
    Furthermore, I conducted multiple rounds of fieldwork at Indian companies, Hindu and Sikh temples, and rural areas. The research on pilgrimage and religious behavior has already been presented at a seminar, and I aim to refine it and submit it to a peer-reviewed journal within the fiscal year 2024.
