    Economists and policymakers in many developed countries regard digitalization and robotic automation as drivers of increased productivity and economic growth. However, these innovations increase the wage gap (skill premium) between unskilled and information technology (IT)-skilled workers. This study examines the effects of technological innovations in automation and development of IT-skilled human resources on economic growth and skill premiums. It combines a task-based approach with a simple two-sector growth model to analyze the impact of automation on economic development and skill premiums. The study's dynamic model reproduces the changes in the skill premium and labor share in the United States since the 1970s. In addition, technological innovation in automation promotes task automation not only in the short run but also in the long run, increasing total output and skill premiums. Regarding IT education for human resource, an optimal level of IT education exists that maximizes production and minimizes the skill premium in the steady state.

    In recent years, although rapid progress in digital technology has made it easier to automate production processes, it has raised concerns that machines may deprive workers of employment. However, the effects of automation-oriented policies on economic growth have not been thoroughly studied. This study examines the effect of task automation on economic growth and its policy implications by incorporating a task-based approach into a neoclassical growth model. I find that the aggregate production function becomes asymptotically linear if firms’ cost-minimization behavior determines the number of automated tasks. Consequently, a higher subsidy rate for automation increases the returns on machines (capital) and generates perpetual economic growth. For factor prices, the rental prices of capital and wages converge to constant values along the equilibrium path. In addition, while an increase in the subsidy rate for automation raises the long-term rental price of capital, it does not affect the long-term wage rates.

    This paper incorporates a task-based approach into the Solow growth model to analyze the effects of automation on economic growth. We find that if task producers smoothly adopt automation technology along the capital accumulation path, sustained growth is possible even without technological progress. This result is brought about by the fact that task automation makes the aggregate production function linear. In addition, we demonstrate that both the rental price of capital and the wage are constant on the growth path. In sum, while the interaction between task automation and capital accumulation can be a pathway for sustained growth in output, it leads to the cease of wage growth in the long run.

    This paper examines the effect of campaign contributions on patent policy, welfare, and innovation using a fully-endogenous quality-ladder model. Assuming two types of households, where one type holds patents and the other does not, we analyze political conflicts between the two groups. Our analysis shows campaign contributions increase the rate of innovation to an excessive level from the viewpoint of social welfare when the innovation-maximizing patent policy is sufficiently strong. This result is important because it implies that the rate of innovation distorted by campaign contributions can be too high from the viewpoint of social welfare.

  • AI時代における自動化と経済成長に関するマクロ動学的研究

    Automation of production processes through digital innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI) and industrial robots are expected to be a driver for achieving economic growth in Japan, where its fertility is declining and the population is aging. However, mechanism of how the progress of automation technology relates to economic growth is not clear. In this study, using “task model,” which has been focused in the field of labor economics, we construct a dynamic general equilibrium model that endogenizes (1) automation and the mechanism of IT human resource skill acquisition, and (2) automation in the R&D sector. Finally, we will develop an economic growth model that integrates the analyses of (1) and (2), and clarify the impact of the progress of automation on economic growth in two aspects: training and supply of IT human resources and use of AI in R&D process.

    In Japan, where the population is declining, automation of production processes through digital innovation is expected to be a driver of economic growth. However, it is not clear how the progress of automation will affect economic growth and income distribution. In this research, I incorporate the "task-based approach" into macroeconomic analysis, to (1) clarify the economic mechanism of automation and (2) show how the progress of automatization affects economic growth and income distribution.

Outline of Social Contribution and International Cooperation activities

  • 経済学・経済教育の普及を目的として，高等学校への出張講義を積極的に行っている。2020年7月には，人社系協働研究・教育コモンズのシンポジウム第5弾企画「グローバリゼーションの行方とローカリティーの再生 ―ポスト・コロナ社会を語る―」にパネラーとして参加し，Covid-19による経済的影響について，マクロ経済学の視点から紹介した。また近年では，福岡県立糸島高校や熊本県玉名高校において「コロナ禍に経済学はどう立ち向かうのか？」 というテーマで，高校生向け講義を行った。
