Exploring Reverse Subtitling of Student-Produced Documentaries

This study will explore the reverse subtitling of the students’ own non-scripted videos. Each student will work on producing an individual mini documentary based on their interviews of people at work in Japan and subtitling it in English. The first stage in the research is to design a subtitling module as part of an EFL documentary production course; later, the processes involved when students reverse subtitle their own documentaries will be identified, and finally feedback will be solicited regarding the effectiveness of the reverse subtitling task to develop their L2 proficiency.
