Silicon (Si) detectors are extensively used for the detection of charged particles in nuclear and particle physics experiments. To achieve position-sensitive charged-particle detection with a relatively low cost, a mosaic-type array based on off-the-shelf Si photodiodes was developed. The high granularity allows the geometric configuration of the array to be modified according to the requirements of specific experiments. In this article, the results of an investigation of the photodiode characteristics using α sources are presented together with the results of an α-decay spectroscopy experiment performed using the constructed array.

In this work we investigate the two-neutron decay of 13Li and of the excited states of 11Li populated via one-proton removal from 14Be and 12Be, respectively. A phenomenological model is used to describe the decay of 11Li and 13Li. While the first one displays important sequential components, the second one appears dominated by the direct two-neutron decay. A microscopic three-body model is used to extract information on the spatial configuration of the emitted neutrons before the decay and shows that the average distance between the neutrons increases going from 11Li to 13Li.

The structure and decay of the most neutron-rich beryllium isotope, Be16, has been investigated following proton knockout from a high-energy B17 beam. Two relatively narrow resonances were observed for the first time, with energies of 0.84(3) and 2.15(5) MeV above the two-neutron decay threshold and widths of 0.32(8) and 0.95(15) MeV, respectively. These were assigned to be the ground (Jπ=0+) and first excited (2+) state, with Ex=1.31(6) MeV. The mass excess of Be16 was thus deduced to be 56.93(13) MeV, some 0.5 MeV more bound than the only previous measurement. Both states were observed to decay by direct two-neutron emission. Calculations incorporating the evolution of the wave function during the decay as a genuine three-body process reproduced the principal characteristics of the neutron-neutron energy spectra for both levels, indicating that the ground state exhibits a strong spatially compact dineutron component, while the 2+ level presents a far more diffuse neutron-neutron distribution.

We report here the first observation of the 02+ state of He8, which has been predicted to feature the condensatelike α+n2+n2 cluster structure. We show that this state is characterized by a spin parity of 0+, a large isoscalar monopole transition strength, and the emission of a strongly correlated neutron pair, in line with theoretical predictions. Our finding is further supported by the state-of-the-art microscopic α+4n model calculations. The present results may lead to new insights into clustering in neutron-rich nuclear systems and the pair correlation and condensation in quantum many-body systems under strong interactions.

We have measured the differential cross section and analyzing power for (p, 2p) reactions that lead to discrete states of residual nuclei at an incident energy of 197 MeV for five kinds of target nuclei, 12C, 16O, 40,48Ca, and 90Zr. The data are compared with distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations using two kinds of global optical potentials. The spectroscopic factors obtained from these calculations agree with those determined in (e, e′p) studies within 20%, except for one orbital of the 90Zr nucleus where the distortion effect is much greater than that for the other orbitals of 90Zr and for other target nuclei. We also observed a clear and visibly distinct j-dependence in the analyzing power.

The dineutron correlation is systematically studied in three different Borromean nuclei near the neutron dripline, 11Li, 14Be and 17B, via the (p,pn) knockout reaction measured at the RIBF facility in RIKEN. For the three nuclei, the correlation angle between the valence neutrons is found to be largest in the same range of intrinsic momenta, which can be associated to the nuclear surface. This result reinforces the prediction that the formation of the dineutron is universal in environments with low neutron density, such as the surface of neutron-rich Borromean nuclei.

We report on the first proton-induced single proton- and neutron-removal reactions from the neutron-deficient O14 nucleus with large Fermi-surface asymmetry Sn-Sp=18.6 MeV at ∼100 MeV/nucleon, a widely used energy regime for rare-isotope studies. The measured inclusive cross sections and parallel momentum distributions of the N13 and O13 residues are compared to the state-of-the-art reaction models, with nuclear structure inputs from many-body shell-model calculations. Our results provide the first quantitative contributions of multiple reaction mechanisms including the quasifree knockout, inelastic scattering, and nucleon transfer processes. It is shown that the inelastic scattering and nucleon transfer, usually neglected at such energy regime, contribute about 50% and 30% to the loosely bound proton and deeply bound neutron removal, respectively. These multiple reaction mechanisms should be considered in analyses of inclusive one-nucleon removal cross sections measured at intermediate energies for quantitative investigation of single-particle strengths and correlations in atomic nuclei.

The quasielastic barrier distribution of 51V+248Cm was extracted by measuring the excitation function of quasielastic backscattering using a gas-filled recoil ion separator, GARIS-III. The obtained barrier distribution is well explained by the coupled-channels calculation, indicating a significant effect of the rotational excitation of deformed 248Cm. From the measured average Coulomb barrier height and deformation parameters of 248Cm, the side-collision energy leading to a compact configuration of colliding nuclei was obtained. The relation between the side collision energy and the excitation function of the evaporation-residue cross sections in the 48Ca248Cm system was evaluated as a reference for the 51V+248Cm case. The optimal reaction energy to synthesize a new element 119 at the 51V+248Cm fusion reaction (3n and 4n channels) was estimated with an aid of these experimental data.

  • Systematic analysis of inelastic α scattering off self-conjugate A=4n nuclei Reviewed

    97 ( 1 )   2018.1

     More details

Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

We systematically measured the differential cross sections of inelastic α scattering off self-conjugate A=4n nuclei at two incident energies Eα=130MeV and 386MeV at Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka University. The measured cross sections were analyzed by the distorted-wave Born-approximation (DWBA) calculation using the single-folding potentials, which are obtained by folding macroscopic transition densities with the phenomenological αN interaction. The DWBA calculation with the density-dependent αN interaction systematically overestimates the cross sections for the ΔL=0 transitions. However, the DWBA calculation using the density-independent αN interaction reasonably well describes all the transitions with ΔL=0-4. We examined uncertainties in the present DWBA calculation stemming from the macroscopic transition densities, distorting potentials, phenomenological αN interaction, and coupled channel effects in C12. It was found that the DWBA calculation is not sensitive to details of the transition densities nor the distorting potentials, and the phenomenological density-independent αN interaction gives reasonable results. The coupled-channel effects are negligibly small for the 21+ and 31- states in C12, but not for the 02+ state. However, the DWBA calculation using the density-independent interaction at Eα=386MeV is still reasonable even for the 02+ state. We concluded that the macroscopic DWBA calculations using the density-independent interaction are reliably applicable to the analysis of inelastic α scattering at Eα∼100MeV/u.

  • Search for the rare γ-decay mode in 12C Reviewed

     More details

Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

Excited states in 12C nuclei play a very important role in the nucleosynthesis in the universe. 12C nuclei are synthesized by the triple α reaction. Normally the triple α process proceeds via the state (Hoyle states) at Ex = 7.65 MeV in 12C. However, at high temperature T > 109, the highly excited 3α resonance states such as the state at Ex = 9.64 MeV might play a part of the triple α reaction. Unfortunately, the γ-decay probability of the state has not been determined, therefore we planned to measure 1H(12C, 12Cp) reaction without measuring γ-rays. The test experiment using the solid hydrogen target and GAGG(Gd3Al2Ga3O12) was recently carried out at the cyclotron facility in RCNP. The results of the test experiment are reported in this paper.
