原子や分子が数個から数百個集まった「クラスター」と呼ばれる物質群が注目されています。クラスターの最大の特徴は、構成粒子数1個の増減でその物性や化学反応性が変化することであり、そのことから従来の常識では考えらなかった新機能性物質の発見が期待されています。我々は、クラスターの電子および幾何構造を明らかにし、その物性や化学反応性を決めている物理的要因を徹底的に明らかにしようとしています。このために、原子・分子の数を一個単位で制御可能にする究極的な気相合成法を開発し、高度に制御化された質量分析技術、最先端のレーザー分光法、高輝度放射施設を用い、多角的な研究を展開しています。また、クラスターの特徴的な電子構造に着目し、クラスターを利用した全く新しい反応動力学の開拓にも挑戦しています。さらに,これら独自の実験技術に基づいた新たな質量分析法の開発を目指しています。以上の研究を行うため、教育においては、原子や分子などのミクロの世界を記述する量子化学、ならびに化学反応を電子と核の運動レベルまで掘り下げる反応動力学についての理解を深め、さらに種々の物理化学的な実験手法を習得することを目指しています。これらの実践的な経験を元に、未知の課題を解決する主体的かつ実行力のある人材を育成し、さらに国際的な研究活動を活発に行うことで国際人としての素養を身に着けることを目指しています。

    We present a novel high-repetition-rate photoelectron imaging (PEI) apparatus for exploring electronic structures of metal cluster anions. A continuous beam of mass-selected metal cluster anions, generated by a magnetron-sputtering cluster-ion source coupled with a quadrupole mass filter, is chopped into sub-megahertz ion bunches using a high-voltage pulser. The quasi-continuous anion beam is introduced into a PEI spectrometer, where the anions are photodetached using a 404 nm (3.07 eV) continuous-wave laser diode. As a demonstration, we acquire photoelectron images for size-selected Ag cluster anions, Ag_N̄ (N = 3, 7, 14), and show that each image can be obtained in a short accumulation time (50 s) with a kinetic energy resolution (ΔE/E) of 4% at E = 1.77 eV. The quasi-continuous PEI technique enables high-count-rate, space-charge-free acquisition of photoelectron spectra and angular distributions not only from size-selected metal cluster anions but also from anions prepared by other continuous ion sources, such as electrospray ionization.

    An assembly of 13 atoms can form highly symmetric architectures like those belonging to D_<3h>, O_h, D_<5h>, and I_h point groups. Here, using photoelectron imaging spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we present a simple yet convincing experimental signature for the selective formation of icosahedral cages of anionic silver clusters encapsulating a dopant atom of group 5 elements: M@Ag_<12>^– (M = V, Nb, and Ta). Their photoelectron images obtained at 4 eV closely resemble one another: only a single ring is observed, which is assignable to photodetachment signals from a 5-fold degenerate superatomic 1D electronic shell in the 1S^21P^61D^<10> configuration of valence electrons. The perfect degeneracy represents an unambiguous fingerprint of an icosahedral symmetry, which would otherwise be lifted in all of the other structural isomers. DFT calculations confirm that I_h forms are the most stable and that D_<5h>, O_h, and D_<3h> structures are not found even in metastable states.

    Valence s electrons in alkali- or coinage-metal clusters are conceived to delocalize over the metal frameworks. The electrons occupy so-called superatomic orbitals (SAOs, i.e., 1S, 1P, 1D, 2S, 1F, ...), which provide an essential picture for understanding the size-dependent, unique properties of these metal clusters. While such electronic shells are unambiguously identified in their photoelectron spectra and supported by electronic structure calculations, characterization of SAOs in heteroatom-doped metal clusters has remained elusive as the doping significantly affects its energy levels and even alters the ordering of SAOs. Here, we present a photoelectron imaging study to explore SAOs formed in Sc-doped and undoped silver cluster anions, Ag_NSc^– (N = 15, 16) and Ag_N^– (N = 18, 19). Photoelectron angular distributions from their outermost SAOs are clearly visualized, whose characters are analyzed with the aid of density functional theory calculations. The present methodology enables us to explore not only the quantized energy levels but also the spatial distributions of SAOs formed in various metal cluster anions.

    A photoexcited molecule undergoes a variety of photophysical and photochemical processes simultaneously or sequentially, and the molecule ultimately relaxes to the ground electronic state (S0) or further undergoes chemical reactions in S0. Time-resolved photoelectron imaging (TRPEI) enables full observation of these photoinduced dynamics, because photoionization can be induced from any part of the potential energy surfaces. However, photoionization from low-lying electronic excited states and S0 requires high probe photon energy in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) wavelength region, and it has been difficult to generate intense femtosecond (fs) VUV laser pulses so far. In this account, we review our effort to obtain a “global reaction map” of photoinduced dynamics of an isolated molecule by TRPEI using fs-VUV pulses. As an example, we present a full observation of cascaded radiationless transitions from the S2(pipi*) state of pyrazine (C4H4N2). Furthermore, we demonstrate that ultrafast photoionization using fs-VUV pulses is a powerful technique to explore configuration interaction of electronic wave functions of an excited electronic state of a molecule. Ultrafast photodynamics of pyrazine in the VUV region is also presented.

    本研究は、真空中の液滴を扱う我々独自の実験手段で、従来困難だった過冷却深部の未踏領域の探索に挑戦する。例えば4℃での密度最大など、水の謎の解明は、物質科学から生命科学にまで波及する重要な課題である。この謎の主要因の一つが過冷却液体の科学の空白地帯にあることから、本手法で可能となる低温領域への新たなアプローチで、過冷却状態の高密度水-低密度水間の相転移など、水の相図問題に挑む。なお、この問題に取り組む戦略として、ポリオール混合溶液、塩添加溶液など水溶液系も対象とし、基本的な諸物性を明らかにする。これらの研究を通して、過冷却液体の科学の深化を図る。

    Toward a metal nanocluster synthesis method using microdroplets and ultrashort laser pulses, it is crucial to elucidate their unique electronic structures due to quantum size effects. In this study, we have developed a novel high-repetition-rate photoelectron imaging (PEI) apparatus for exploring electronic structures of metal cluster anions. The PEI apparatus is capable of simultaneously obtaining photoelectron spectra and angular distributions in only 50 seconds, even for extremely dilute samples. A paper describing the details of this PEI apparatus has been reported in Review of Scientific Instruments published by American Physical Institute. In addition to this paper, we reported one refereed paper, gave an invited lecture, and made ten presentations at related conferences during this research period.
