Brief description of the research, teaching and direct contribution to the society: Research:The field of research is dynamical-systemic approach with topological methods to problems in applied analysis. This topological and geometric point of view sheds new light on subjects which usually studied by analytical methods. Teaching:There are two kinds of courses in terms of the objectives. Classes in the first category are tought at the faculty of mathematics in the department of science, and the graduate school of mathematics. Their aim is to provide discipline for experts of mathematics. Those in the second one are tought in the department of engineering in order to offer basic mathematical knowledge and advanced tools for applications in technology. Direct contribution to the society:A lecture in the community courses of the faculty of mathematics in Kyushu University in 2003.

    We propose a rigorous computational method for verifying the isolated eigenvalues of one-dimensional Schrödinger operator containing a periodic potential and a perturbation which decays exponentially at ±∞. We show how the original eigenvalue problem can be reformulated as the problem of finding a connecting orbit in a Lagrangian-Grassmanian. Based on the idea of the Maslov theory for Hamiltonian systems, we set up an integer-valued topological measurement, the rotation number of the orbit in the resulting one-dimensional projective space. Combining the interval arithmetic method for dynamical systems, we demonstrate a computer-assisted proof for the existence of isolated eigenvalues within the first spectral gap.

Educational Activities

  • Commitments to education:

    My teaching duty consists of four kinds of courses:

    1.Lectures and exercise courses for freshmen in the faculty of mathematics:
    Teaching foundation of mathematical way of thinking, and attitude and the
    methods of study to the students who will study mathematics as an academic.

    2.Lectures for seniors and graduate students in the faculty of mathematics:
    Introducing advanced topics from specific areas in order to provide
    good perspectives of the academic to students who finished standard course
    of mathematics.

    3.Lectures and exercise courses for freshmen and sophomores in the department
    of engineering e.t.c.:
    Teaching basic knowledge of mathematics such as calculus and liner algebra
    to students who will use mathematics as a tool.

    4.Lectures for juniors and seniors in the department of engineering:
    Providing mathematical tools used in engineering e.t.c. such as differential
    equations, Fourier analysis and so on to students who need theses tools.
