(5)Algal Growth Inhibition Allelochemical released from Aquatic Macrophytes: In eutrophicated semi-closed water areas, extraordinary growth of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) has been an increasing serious problem. Many papers have been published on the biosynthesis of liver toxin, microcystin, by cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa, and on the occurrence of taste and odor due to 2-MIB or geosmin released by Oscillatria agardhii, a dominant species of water-blooms. To purify eutrophicated waters, some aquatic macrophytes have been accepted to absorb nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus. All plants release some biochemical substances, so-called Allelochemical, into ambient environment, and these substances will affect other plants, insects and bacteria as an inhibitor or promoter. These phenomena are called Allelopathy. In addition to the nutrients removal, if aquatic macrophytes show allelopathic inhibition effects on cyanobacteria, it can be a useful method of controlling the eutrophication. The purpose of this paper is to examine allelopathic effects of aquatic macrophytes, Eichhornia crassipes and Cyperus alternifolius L., on cyanobacterium growth inhibition, and to identify algicidal allelochemical. Research results are as follows: 1) Two living macrophytes, E.crassipes and C.alternifolius L completely lysed the cells of M.aeruginosa within a few days after the coexistence. The supernatant after cultivation of the macrophytes showed also strong inhibition on the growth. These results were obtained under no limitation of nutrients as well as light irradiation. This means E.crassipes and C.alternifolius L. released algicidal allelochemical into ambient environment. 2) The algicidal allelochemical isolated from water-extracts of E.crassipes was a kind of Condensed Tannin. Polyphenols, like Tannin, are reported as a typical algicidal allelochemical. It was suggested Tannin released from these macrophytes inhibited the growth of M.aeruginosa. (6)Isolation of the Denitrifying Phosphate-Accumulating Organisms Utilize Acetate as a Sole Carbon Source: A screening work using new screening equipment was carried out to isolate the denitrifying phosphate-accumulating organisms under alternating anaerobic-anoxic conditions. Acetate as a sole organic matter and nitrate as a final electron acceptor were added in the medium for the anaerobic and the anoxic phase, respectively. Since the inside of equipment was washed with distilled water at the shifting phase from each condition to the other condition, acetate and nitrate did not exist simultaneously during the work. As a result of an screening-isolation work using activated sludge in a municipal waste water treatment plant, three kinds of pure cultures were obtained. By microscopy with staining methods, it was proved that all of isolated bacteria had the activities of polyphosphate and PHB accumulation under the alternating anaerobic-anoxic conditions. It is suggested qualitatively that all of isolated organisms posesses characteristics representative of the behaviour of phosphate-accumulating organisms in activated sludge. (7)Some Aspects on Pollutant Load to the River Basins in the Itoshima Area: The New Campus of Kyushu University is under construction in the Itoshima area which has four municipalities; Maebaru City, Nijo Town, Shima Town and western part of Fukuoka City. Although a part of wastewater in the area is treated in the Seibu sewage treatment plant at present, which is located out of the area, a new sewage treatment plant, which will discharge the treated wastewater to the semi-closed bay at the north-eastern Itoshima area, the Imazu Bay, is also planed. In future, pollutant load discharged into the bay may increase by the construction of the new campus and regional development. The retarding function, in addition, will deteriorate with the construction and the regional development. These will significantly affect ecosystems, especially in the Imazu bay and the Kahuri bay locating at the estuaries of the Zuibaiji river and the Raizan river, respectively. The objectives of the present work are to create a database on the unit of pollution load and various kinds of statistical data, and to examine the point/non-point pollutant loads to each river basin in the area, by using GIS. Research results indicate that the pollutant loads to the Zuibaiji river basin and the Raizan river basin are more than those in the other basins, and pollutant load from live-stock waste/waste water is the largest in almost all river basins. In order to conserve aquatic environment in the Imazu bay and the Kahuri bay, it will be necessary to control and maintain sewer, to make further improvement for advanced treatment, to convert the Jokaso (septic tank for night soil) into other types of highly efficient sewage treatment systems, and to reduce pollutant lord from live-stock waste/waste water with appropriate treatment. Added to these, it will be extremely important to reduce pollutant lord from the non-point sources. (8)The influence of starvation phase on the properties and the development of aerobic granules: The current study was to evaluate the influence of starvation phase on surface negative charge, relative hydrophobicity, extra-cellular polymer substances (EPS) and the formation mechanism of aerobic granules. Granules with encouraging settling properties occurred in the reactor about 7 days after the inoculation. The surface negative charge decreased from 0.203 to 0.023 meq g VSS−1 and the relative hydrophobicity increased from 28.8 to 60.3% during the granulation period. Concentrations of protein and carbohydrate decreased from 18.0 to 7.1 and 7.0 to 2.9 mg g VSS−1, respectively in the first period. And from day 13, those values were observed in the range of 5.8–8.6 and 2.9–5.6 mg g VSS−1, respectively. The EPS especially protein concentrations well correlated with surface charge and relatively hydrophobicity. It was concluded that a reasonable amount of EPS should be controlled to form and maintain aerobic granules. It was proposed that aerobic granulation was initiated by starvation phase and then enhanced by anaerobic metabolism. (11) “Highly dissolved oxygen water system” will be applied for the prevention of oxygen-depleted water occurrence. There are two purposes for the utilization of this kind of system or technique supplying the highly dissolved oxygen water to the bottom layer. The first purpose is to reproduce the barrier oxidative layer at the bottom, in order to control the elution of nutrients from the anaerobic sediment. Another one is to stimulate aerobic microorganisms such as zooplankton and the aerobic bacteria, in order to restructure the aquatic ecosystem, which leading to sustainable water environment. Water quality measurement and biota investigation were conducted in several important water areas of the Lake Taihu, i.e., the East Lake Taihu area and the Meiliang Bay area. Temporal and spatial variation trends of the water quality and biota in these areas of the Lake Taihu were clarified in the 2010 and 2011. The results of identification and quantification showed that there were many species of aquatic macrophytes in the East Lake Taihu, while they were seldom distributed in the Meiliang Bay. In the East Lake Taihu, pen culture covers a large part of the lake surface, which leads to an increase of the organics and nutrients loading. Eutrophication phenomena characterized with cyanobacteria water-bloom are becoming seriously, especially in the Meiliang Bay. According to these results, an aquatic environmental improvement strategy was proposed. "Ecological Dam” (Eco-engineering Dam Barrier Structure, EDBS) based on the biomanipulation techniques, seems to be available from the ecological engineering point of view. (12) In order to recover the energy from the sewage, how to advancely treat the secondary effluent is investigated.     Title: Effective removal of cesium from aqueous solution by modified sewage sludge molten slag as a low-cost adsorbent
    In this study, the effective cesium adsorption from aqueous solution was experimented onto the sewage sludge molten (SSM) slag, modified by alkaline (NaOH) hydrothermal treatment. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of contact time, solution pH, adsorbent dose, different initial cesium ions concentrations, temperature and the effect of competitive ions on cesium adsorption. The adsorption isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies were also evaluated following the experimental results to explore the equilibrium conditions and the mechanism of cesium adsorption. A higher cesium removal efficiency of almost 100% (for 20-100 mg/L of initial cesium ions concentration) was achieved by the modified slag and the maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 52.36 mg/g compared with the raw slag. The higher adsorption performance of the modified slag may be due to the formation of artificial zeolites on its surface during the hydrothermal treatment process. In the competitive ions effect on cesium adsorption, the modified slag effectively captured the cesium ions in the presence of Na+ and K+, especially at their lower molar concentrations (1:10). Kinetic parameters were fitted by pseudo-second order model. The adsorption isotherms data of modified slag were well fitted to the Langmuir (R2=0.989) and Freundlich isotherms model (R2=0.988). The thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption process by the modified slag was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. Moreover, the modified slag was reused several cycles (adsorption-elution-adsorption) without deterioration of its original adsorption performance. Therefore, it is expected that the SSM modified slag could be effectively used as cost-effective and a potential adsorbent for cesium adsorption from wastewater.

    1.ケイ酸栄養塩の連続供給により、珪藻及び珪酸要求の緑藻類の増殖が促進され、その結果として、アオコが抑制された。
    2.珪藻生育担体の設置により、アオコColonyに直接作用する珪藻が増殖され、アオコが抑制された。 
     今後、ケイ酸栄養塩供給及び珪藻生育担体設置による両手法とも、省エネルギーで、持続性のある生態工学的アオコ抑制対策として実用化を目指す。来年度より、アオコが発生するダム湖水域で効果の検証を試みる計画である。

    Wastewater irrigation for vegetable cultivation is greatly concerned about the presence of toxic metals in irrigated soil and vegetables which causes possible threats to human health. This study aimed to ascertain the accumulation of heavy metals (HMs) in edible parts of vegetables irrigated with different stages of textile dyeing wastewater (TDW). Bio-concentration factor (BCF), Estimated daily intake (EDI), and target hazard quotient (THQ) were computed to estimate human health risks and speculate the hazard index (HI) of adults and children with the consumption of HMs contaminated vegetables at recommended doses. Five vegetables (red amaranth, Indian spinach, cauliflower, tomato, and radish) in a pot experiment were irrigated with groundwater (T1) and seven stages of TDW (T2∼T8) following a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Among the TDW stages, T8, T7, T4, and T5 exhibited elevated BCF, EDI, THQ, and HI due to a rising trend in the accumulation of Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ni heavy metals in the edible portion of the red amaranth, followed by radish, Indian spinach, cauliflower, and tomato. The general patterns of heavy metal (HM) accumulation, regarded as vital nutrients for plants, were detected in the following sequence: Zn > Mn/Cu > Fe. Conversely, toxic metals were found to be Cd/Cr > Ni > Pb, regardless of the type of vegetables. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified T8, T7, and T4 of TDW as the primary contributors to the accumulation of heavy metals in the vegetables examined. Furthermore, the analysis of the heavy metals revealed that the BCF, THQ, and HI values for all studied metals were below 1, except for Pb. This suggests that the present consumption rates of different leafy and non-leafy vegetables, whether consumed individually or together, provide a low risk in terms of heavy metal exposure. Nevertheless, the consumption of T8, T7, and T4 irrigated vegetables, specifically Indian spinach alone or in combination with red amaranth and radish, by both adults and children, at the recommended rate, was found to pose potential health risks. On the other hand, T2, T3, and T6 irrigated vegetables were deemed safe for consumption. These findings indicated that the practice of irrigating the vegetables with T8, T7, and T4 stages of TDW has resulted in a significant buildup of heavy metals in the soils and edible parts of vegetables which are posing health risks to adults and children. Hence, it is imperative to discharge the T8, T7, and T4 stages of TDW after ETP to prevent the contamination of vegetables and mitigate potential health risks.

    A huge amount of jute caddies is generated as a by-product in jute spinning industries solid waste is generally disposed of either in landfilling or burned as boiler fuel triggers environmental pollution. Owing to their higher fibre length and moderate single fibre tensile properties, the waste fibres in jute caddies can be transformed into dry fibre preform which in turn could be used in the production of composites. In this work, jute caddies were cleaned by compressed air before being pressed into dry fibre preform in order to increase the fibre packing capacity in the composites. Thermoplastic composites were manufactured by combining 40 % fibre with 60 % polypropylene (PP) matrix (by weight) using a hot press machine. The effect of chemical treatments (alkali and benzoyl chloride) on jute fibre was characterized by FTIR, TGA, and SEM. Tensile and flexural properties were evaluated to see the performance of composites. The findings of this study demonstrated that this newly developed dry short fibre jute caddies-based thermoplastic composites possess improved flexural properties by ⁓42.75 % if they are chemically modified with binders. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) can react with the functional groups of jute fibre to form strong hydrogen bonding that may result in enhanced bending properties of the composites. Therefore, the proposed composite made from jute caddies waste could be ideally used in semi-structural composite applications leading to a sustainable approach to disposing of jute industry solid waste through a circular economy.

    Diatoms play the main role as primary producer, in tidal flat ecosystems, which have high biological production. Diatoms requires silicon as essential nutrient. Since diatoms in tidal flats mainly obtain dissolved silicon (DSi) loading from a river, it is important to accumurate information about DSi dynamics. In this study, we conducted fieldworks on the basin of Zuibaiji river and evaluated the DSi supply into Imazu tital flat(S0), DSi traping or supply by a reservoir and a sewage treatment plant(T1, S1, respectively). S0 and T1 were estimated as 10.4 ton, and 0.57 ton in December 2022, respectively. It is considered that diatom production and sedimentation to bottom layer in the reservoir was main factor for DSi traping. S1 was also estimated that 2.7 ton of DSi were supplied in December 2022. It is indicated that the reservoirs and the sewage treatment plants have non-regligible influence to DSi supply into tital flats.

    A huge amount of jute caddies is generated as a by-product in jute spinning industries being considered solid waste are generally disposed of either in landfilling or burned as boiler fuel that triggers environmental pollution. Owing to their higher fibre length and moderate single fibre tensile properties, the waste fibres in jute caddies can be transformed into dry fibre preform which in turn could be used in the production of composites. In this work, jute caddies were cleaned by compressed air prior to being pressed into dry fibre preform in order to increase the fibre packing capacity in the composites. Thermoplastic composites were manufactured by combining 40% fiber with 60% polypropylene matrix (by weight) using a hot press machine. The effect of chemical treatments (alkali and benzoyl chloride) on jute fibre was characterized by FTIR, TGA, and SEM. Tensile and flexural properties were evaluated to see the performance of composites. The findings of this study demonstrated that this newly developed dry short fibre jute caddies-based thermoplastic composites possess improved flexural properties by ⁓42.75 % if they are chemically modified with binders. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) can react with the functional groups of jute fibre to form strong hydrogen bonding that may result in enhanced bending properties of the composites. Therefore, composite made from jute caddies waste could be ideally used in semi-structural composite applications leading to a sustainable approach to disposing of jute industry solid waste through a circular economy.

    This study is investigated to the competition between cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa and diatom Nitzschia palea that can increase their cell number in a favorable environment for the occurrence of water bloom. We particularly focused on the temperature and pH effects on the inhibition effects of M. aeruginosa by N. palea. The maximum cell yield of M. aeruginosa reduced by approximately 50 % in the co-culture with N. palea at 15–30 ℃ as compared to that in the monoculture. N. palea also reduced the maximum cell yield of M. aeruginosa by 33, 54 and 66 % at pH 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0, respectively. N. palea reduced M. aeruginosa growth in the culture condition where water bloom is likely to occur. However, M. aeruginosa remained the dominant species in co-culture at 20–30 ℃ or pH 7.0–8.0. It is necessary to artificially increase the relative abundance of N. palea for enhancing the inhibition effect of M. aeruginosa.

    This chapter introduces Fukuoka Prefecture as an example of measures taken by an administrative body toward preservation of the aquatic environment.     Diatoms play the main role as primary producer, in tidal flat ecosystems, which have high biological production. Diatoms requires silicon as essential nutrient. Since diatoms in tidal flats mainly obtain dissolved silicon (DSi) loading from a river, it is important to accumurate information about DSi dynamics. In this study, we conducted fieldworks on the basin of Zuibaiji river and evaluated the DSi supply into Imazu tital flat(S0), DSi traping or supply by a reservoir and a sewage treatment plant(T1, S1, respectively). S0 and T1 were estimated as 10.4 ton, and 0.57 ton in December 2022, respectively. It is considered that diatom production and sedimentation to bottom layer in the reservoir was main factor for DSi traping. S1 was also estimated that 2.7 ton of DSi were supplied in December 2022. It is indicated that the reservoirs and the sewage treatment plants have non-regligible influence to DSi supply into tital flats.

    本研究は、プラズマ処理のような新たな賦活化手法を検討すると同時に、Cs+を吸着除去した賦活化竹炭・木炭を焼却処理することで、最終処分される放射性廃棄物の減容化を目指すものである。また、ゼオライトを表面に形成させることで、Cs+吸着能の高い下水汚泥溶融スラグを開発するものである。ここでは、以下の3つの成果について紹介する。
    (1) 大気圧非平衡プラズマ処理が竹炭および活性炭のCs⁺吸着能に及ぼす影響
    (2) 賦活化木炭のCs⁺吸着能とその焼却時の減容化率及びCs⁺回収率について

    本研究では、下水汚泥溶融スラグに対して熱アルカリ処理を施すことで、Cs+吸着能が向上するメカニズムを明らかにした。
    1) 熱アルカリ処理により、賦活化スラグの表面に細孔構造が形成され、同時に、比表面積が増加する。また、ゼオライト相 (X型ゼオライト、Y型ゼオライト、ソーダライトなど) が形成されることを明らかにした。
    2) 初期濃度が10~100 mg-Cs+/lの範囲では、賦活化スラグの吸着率の低下はほとんど観察されず、98%程度であった。最大Langmuir吸着容量は52 mg-Cs+/g-slag程度であり、未処理スラグの3~4倍程度に向上した。pHが4以上の条件下では、5分程度で吸着平衡に達した。
    3) 汚泥溶融スラグは、ゼオライト形成のための安価なSi源、Al源となり得る。天然の粘土系およびゼオライト系の吸着材の持つCs+吸着能に匹敵する人工ゼオライトを形成し得る可能性が示された。

    本研究では、下水汚泥溶融スラグの成分および磁性分離能、賦活化処理の際の条件、共存イオンがCs+吸着能に及ぼす影響を実験的に検討した。
    1) 成分の異なる5種類の下水汚泥溶融スラグを用いてCs+吸着実験を行うことで、スラグ成分の違いによるCs+吸着能への影響について検討した。その結果、成分の異なるスラグを同じ条件下で賦活化処理を施すことで、全てのスラグの単位質量当たりのCs+吸着量が大幅に増加した。これは、スラグ表面を熱アルカリ処理することで、その表面の一部にゼオライトが形成されるためである。しかしながら、スラグ中のSiとAlの比率、また、SiとAlに対するCaの含有量が、形成されるゼオライトの量や質に影響を及ぼし、吸着量に差が生じた。
       スラグ中に含まれるFe2O3の含有量が同程度であったとしも、その種類により磁石での分離率が異なる。α- Fe2O3を多く含むスラグは磁石での分離率が低いものと思われる。Cs+吸着後に磁石でスラグを回収することが困難なものもあった。一歩、γ- Fe2O3多く含むと考えられるスラグではCs+吸着能も高く、かつ、磁性分離も可能であった。
    2) スラグAを用いて、様々な条件下で熱アルカリ処理を施した後にCs+吸着実験を行い、スラグの表面処理条件がCs+吸着能に及ぼす影響について検討した。その結果、スラグAに熱アルカリ処理を施すことで、単位質量あたりCs+吸着量は大幅に増加し、最大のもので吸着量が約18 [mg/g] に達した。この増加の要因は、熱アルカリ処理によってスラグ表面にゼオライトが生成されたためであると推察された。また、スラグAについては、熱アルカリ処理の際にSiO2添加量を変化させても、Cs+吸着量への影響は小さった。しかしながら、NaOH濃度を増加させると、Cs+吸着量は増加し、NaOH濃度が1 [mol/L] の時に吸着量が大幅に増加した。加熱温度120℃と80℃で熱アルカリ処理を施したスラグのCs+吸着量を比較すると、120℃で処理したスラグの吸着量が相対的に大きかった。スラグAについては、加熱温度120℃、NaOH濃度1 [mol/L] の条件下で賦活化処理を施すことで、約18 [mg/g] のCs+吸着能が得られた。
    3) Cs+溶液中 (初期Cs+濃度10 mg/L、0.075 mmol/L) に陽イオンを共存させた条件下で吸着実験を行い、共存する陽イオンがCs+吸着に及ぼす影響について検討した。その結果、他の陽イオンがモル濃度比で110倍程度添加された場合、Cs+吸着率は90%以上となった。しかしながら、モル濃度比で100倍となるように過剰に陽イオンを添加した場合、Cs+吸着は阻害された。特に、K+による阻害で吸着率は約50%に、NH4+による阻害で吸着率が約59%に低下した。実際の廃水や水環境中の陽イオンの種や存在量によっては、Cs+吸着能の低下を考慮する必要がある。

    活性汚泥から抽出したPoly-PにMAP 法を適用した場合のMAP 形成能を実験的に検討し、以下の結論を得た。
    1) 薬剤添加によって白いフロック状の沈殿物が生じた。沈殿物を光学顕微鏡で観察したところ、多数の結晶物が確認された。また、MAP 形成後に加熱処理水に残留するT-P、NH4+-N、Mg 濃度を測定した結果、顕著な減少が全ての成分で生じていたため、結晶物はMAP であると判断した。そのMAP がポリリン酸から形成されたものであるかを調べるため、各溶液に残留するPi、 Poly-P 濃度を測定し、MAP 形成前の濃度と比較した結果、Poly-P の大幅な減少が確認された。そのため、Poly-PからのMAP 形成が可能であることが明らかとなった。
    2) Poly-PのMAP 形成能を評価するため、Piの割合が多い溶液とPoly-Pの割合が多い溶液のT-P 回収率、Mg 回収量を比較したところ、Poly-Pの割合が多い溶液の方がT-P 回収率が約7% 高く、Mg 回収量が1/ 2 程度少ない結果となった。したがって、活性汚泥からPoly-Pを抽出することは、リン回収率を向上させ、同時に、マグネシウム薬剤の添加量削減に有効である。
