Research: To solve the various problems in local region such as flood, drought, environment pollution etc., I have studied about water environmental issue which include climate change impact assessment and adaptation in river basin by applying laboratory experiment, field observation and numerical computation based on environmental hydraulics and hydrology. Social activities: I have participated in some committee activities in affiliated societies, have given a discourse on my research for citizens and a lecture of basic subject for private company. Since it is necessary that various problems in local region such as climate change adaptation is approached with citizens, I would like to work even more closely with government, private company and citizens, etc.

    Dissolved oxygen (DO) plays a critical role in the marine ecosystem. However, in recent years, there have been reports from around the world of declining levels of DO, primarily occurring in the summer and caused by increased freshwater and nutrient input. Climate change has been causing an increase in both the duration and extent of precipitation, resulting in a substantial influx of effluents that has emerged as a primary contributor to the deterioration of water quality. In this study, A long-term pattern of hypoxia (from 2001 to 2020) in the Ariake Sea is described using a hydrodynamic model and a lower-trophic ecosystem model by Delft3D-Flow module and Delft3D-WAQ module. The freshwater inflow during the rainy season in the early summer is also evaluated to identify its relationship to the development of hypoxia and its effect at the interannual scales. From 2001 to 2020, there has been a significant increase in the area of hypoxia at the bottom sea layer after the summer effluent, indicating an upward trend that is positively correlated with the volume of effluent (R=0.67).

    <p>General Circulation Models (GCMs) used for climate change impact assessment have biases relative to observational data. These biases are corrected by applying long-term observational data (e.g. 20 years). However, there are many data scarce areas, such as developing countries. In these areas, reanalysis data is used instead of observational data. But reanalysis data also have biases since it targets global scale. This study aims to build statistical bias correction method for reanalysis data and verify the past river flow regime in the basin of Tateno dam. Tateno dam is under construction, so long-term pseudo-observational data is essential when we assess the river flow regime. As a result, it is revealed that the statistical correction method can reproduce the river flow regime comparison with observational data. Also, we found the reproducibility of discharge outflow from Tateno dam is almost same relative to observational data.</p>

    Attributing nitrogen export to specific land use within heterogeneous catchments remains a challenge due to the spatio-temporal variability in conditions influencing the mobilization and fate of nitrogen species. This study demonstrates that the measurement of dual stable isotopes of nitrate, taken along with routine tributary measurement of nitrogen in nitrate (NO3−-N) and ammonium (NH4+-N), aids in apportioning sources of the overall nitrogen load during wet periods. An inverse modeling technique was developed to estimate the land use-specific export rates of NO3−-N and NH4+-N from the Caboolture River Catchment in Queensland, Australia. Measurements of nitrogen in streamflow at 51 locations during six sampling campaigns (May 2012 to April 2013) were made along with catchment geospatial data that was used to disaggregate sub-catchments into six land use fractions. A hydrological model was applied to compute the runoff from each fraction and water routing through the stream network. This data was used within a nitrogen mixing model with inclusion δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3. The land uses specific export rate was computed inversely as the posterior of a Bayesian interference applied to the model. During higher rainfall periods when export rates were highest, the main land use exporting nitrogen was wetland (110 g/ha/day NO3−-N, 27 g/ha/day NH4+-N) resulted from mineralization and nitrification of organic N, followed by urban (16 g/ha/day NO3−-N, 2.3 g/ha/day NH4+-N). The advantage of using the dual isotopes in conjunction with the nitrogen concentration data was demonstrated by reduced uncertainty in the computed rates during the higher rainfall periods, relative to calculations without δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3.

    Ripening berries are one of nature's important contributions to people in the Russian Far East. We examined the spatiotemporal variability of people's interests in 12 types of berries and their attributes by accessing Yandex statistics (Yandex) and Google Trends (GT) about these topics in the Russian Far East. On Yandex, time-series data for people's interests in many berries for all target regions showed clear seasonal changes, with an annual peak that occurs at the time of ripening. Interest in berries was observed in many cities and regions in the far east of Russia, where indigenous peoples and Sakha traditionally utilize berries for subsistence. The attributes of accessed terms were closely related to terms about berry varieties and edible berries, berry purchases, photographs, and recipes. These results supported the usability of Yandex and GT data to evaluate the spatiotemporal variability of people's interests in berries. Despite systematic biases, such as in the Internet environment and user characteristics as well as limitations of spatial resolution and access period, the integrated use of Yandex and GT should be developed to evaluate the spatiotemporal variability of people's interests in berries, especially in areas that are difficult to access.

    <p>To evaluate impacts of climate change on water environment and ecosystem services, Global Climate Models (GCMs) are used in the previous studies. However, it is necessary to apply bias correction to GCM with long-term observation data (e.g. over 20 years) to evaluate impacts of climate change since GCMs has biases between the observation data. In generally, reanalysis data has been used in a data scarce area. However, despite reanalysis data has been applied data assimilation method based on observation data, reanalysis data does not match the real weather characteristics (e.g. precipitation) in a local scale since it is targeted at a global scale. In previous studies, statistical correction method for precipitation of reanalysis data has been developed. However, the method has not been developed for hydro-meteorological data except for precipitation (e.g. temperature, air-pressure, windspeed). Therefore, this study aims to develop and apply the statistical correction method for hydro-meteorological data of re-analysis data.</p>
