    I01B-1827 - (Poster Award - 1st Place) Liquid Water Permeability in a Hydrophobic Microporous Layer for the Anode Interdigitated Flow Field of a Gas-Liquid Separating Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Water Electrolyzer

    A novel interdigitated flow field for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers (polymer electrolyte electrolysis cells) composed of oxygen exhaust channels apart from liquid water feed channels has been developed for ground and space applications 1, 2). This design can separate oxygen gas and liquid water between the flow channels without buoyancy, so that it dispenses with water circulators for bubble removal in electrolyzers and external separators by natural or centrifugal buoyancy.
    In this electrolyzer, pressurized liquid water is injected in the in-plane direction from the water channels to the catalyst layer through a hydrophobic microporous layer (MPL) applied to the anode porous transport layer (PTL) 2). Produced oxygen gas is discharged in the through-plane direction of the MPL to the oxygen channels, taking advantage of the capillary pressure in the hydrophobic MPL 2),3). Extreme leakage of the liquid water to the oxygen channels has not been found.

    This study conducted liquid water permeability tests for an MPL (SIGRACET 29BC, SGL Carbon Inc.) with pressurized liquid water by weighing liquid water penetrated through the MPL-coated PTL to the PTL surface under ambient air pressure. We find gradual permeability decreases with time for different liquid water pressures 4). This permeability is a useful parameter for optimal structure designs of this electrolyzer. Similar tendencies were also observed for a hydrophobic PTL without MPL (SIGRACET 29BA, SGL Carbon Inc., substrate of the MPL-coated PTL). The same test on the hydrophobic MPL dried after the test revealed that the permeability partially recovered. The liquid water networks inside the MPL and the PTL substrate possibly lead to decreases in the permeability. This phenomenon is a critical issue for this electrolytic cell as well as PEM fuel cells, and thus discussed further.

    <p>Ni/ZnO nanowire (NW) catalysts for ammonia cracking are prepared and evaluated for hydrogen production for applications such as fuel cells. NW catalysts are expected to be more durable than conventional nanoparticle catalysts because of their three-dimensional structure that prevents agglomeration. In this study, we introduce a hierarchical structure to the NWs to increase the active surface area. The NW catalysts are prepared by hydrothermally synthesizing ZnO NWs and coating them with Ni.</p>

    <p>Direct local current and temperature measurements were performed in a planar solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) by segmenting the anode (oxygen electrode) to measure the actual spatial current and temperature distributions for high temperature steam electrolysis along the cathode (hydrogen electrode) flow channels. Under voltage control, the currents and temperatures in the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments along the reactant vapor flow were successfully measured.</p>

    <p>The analysis of the three-dimensional current density, concentration, and temperature distribution in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cells and stacks has conventionally required high computational cost. In this study, we measure the current distributions in a planar test cell with segmented electrodes, which are used to construct and verify a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model. A surrogate model is generated with machine learning using current densities for the cell voltages, gas concentrations, and temperatures as training data predicted from the FE model, which is expected to reduce the computational cost.</p>

    <p>Tokyo Gas is working on the social implementation of methanation, which can achieve carbon neutrality of gaseous energy while effectively utilizing existing city gas infrastructure, with the aim at realizing a carbon neutral society by 2050.     High pressure PEECs (Polymer Electrolyte Electrolysis Cells) possibly suffer from hydrogen gas crossover driven by the large pressure difference between cathode and anode, and the crossover decreases the current efficiency. As a countermeasure of the crossover, controlling wettability of cathode porous current supplier is proposed here. Higher wettability may promote detachment of bubbles from the supplier, and reduce the retention time of the bubbles there, resulting in less crossover. This study evaluates this wettability effect on the crossover experimentally. Experiments with changing the wettability of the supplier revealed that higher wettability reduces the crossover and increases the current efficiency. However, under high pressure condition, the wettability effect does not appear clearly. In the experiments, accuracy in hydrogen crossover measurement value is important. This issue is addressed with the new measurement device which measures hydrogen concentration in oxygen evolution side.

    To achieve the high performance of PEFC, understanding generated water phase (liquid and gas) in it is an important issue. In this study, we try to clarify the phase through open circuit voltages (OCVs) for a cell. We experimentally investigated the OCVs under the pressure of 1 atm and temperature of 40℃, with changing the humidity of supplied gases and compared theoretical potentials estimated by the Nernst equation, with considering hydrogen crossover and cathode Pt oxidation. The measured OCVs decreased with increasing the relative humidity. This characteristic corresponded to the prediction by the theory. However, the quantitative agreement between them was not obtained. This considered to be caused by the dynamic change of OCVs.

    One of the technical problems for the commercialization of FCV is a sub-zero performance improvement. During 0℃ to -30℃, generation water in channel and GDL freezes. Therefore, gas supply is obstructed and diffusion overvoltage increases. The solution has been solved by the optimization of the purge condition and the improvement of the heater. On the other hand, under the extremely low temperature less than -30℃, the water even in polymer electrolyte membrane freeze, the conductivity of the proton decreases and the operation of PEFC cannot start. This problem does not have a solution. The key to the solution is to make clear the drop mechanism of the proton conductivity due to the solidification of the generation water. This paper investigates the transport property of the proton under sub-zero degree.

    An anode-supported honeycomb SOFC can achieve high power density and improve thermo-mechanical durability at high temperatures. We have fabricated the honeycomb cell with an electrolyte layer of 8YSZ on an anode honeycomb substrate of Ni/8YSZ. The cathode layer is LSM-YSZ composite. Current-voltage and current-power density characteristics of the cells having different anode and cathode flow channel configurations are measured under different hydrogen flow rates and partial pressures. We also evaluate the hydrogen mole fraction distributions in the honeycomb cell using finite element method, and discuss appropriate anode and cathode flow channel configurations.

    Liquid water accumulated in the catalyst layer and gas diffusion layer (GDL) of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC, PEMFC) results in performance deterioration due to inhibition of transport of the reactant oxygen in the cathode (Flooding). To enhance the drainage in the GDL, the application of a microporous layer (MPL) is effective to the catalyst layer side of the GDL substrate. To elucidate the effects of two-phase flow on the oxygen transport in an MPL for its optimized designs, we model three-dimensional porous structures of in-house MPLs with pore network model (PNM) for convective air permeation and oxygen diffusion. Pore diameter distribution derived by a focused ion beam scanning electron microscope is employed in the PNM. Air permeation measurements combined with oxygen diffusion measurements with changing liquid saturation by using gas chromatography validate the model.

  • 固体高分子形燃料電池,固体酸化物形燃料電池の運転状態診断法および性能向上のための物質輸送,熱解析,ならびにリチウムイオン二次電池の評価・解析法に関して,民間企業と共同研究を実施している.
    国際会議を通して,海外の研究者と交流を図っている.
    地球規模課題対応国際科学技術協力プログラム(SATREPS) 「高効率燃料電池と再生バイオガスを融合させた地域内エネルギー循環システムの構築」に分担研究者として参加し,ベトナム国家大学ホーチミン市校ナノテク研究所、カントー大学、ホーチミン市工科大学との連携研究開発を進めている.
