As ecological and societal crises intensify, a shift in design philosophy is urgently needed—one that moves beyond anthropocentrism and embraces relational, multispecies perspectives. This paper introduces Co-becoming as a relational design framework grounded in Chinese and Japanese ontologies. Rather than viewing design as the imposition of form upon passive matter, Co-becoming reframes design as an attunement to the evolving relational fields of human and more-than-human life. Drawing on East Asian philosophical traditions, the paper outlines a cosmological foundation for rethinking design as a participatory, process-oriented, and ethical practice. In addition, the paper argues for the central role of narrative in paradigm shift. Through worldmaking practice, designing for Co-becoming enables designers to cultivate humility, resonance, and care, engaging multiple species in the co-creation of ethical futures. By integrating East Asian relational worldviews with contemporary design discourse, this study contributes to the development of a pluriversal design ethic.

This paper introduces More-Than-Death as a critical design futures concept that reconsiders the taboo of death beyond humancentered life exceptionalism. Building on More-Than-Human and Post-humanist discourse, it frames death not as failure or
absence, but as a relational and generative condition integral to ecological and multispecies futures. The paper reviews the
cultural sequestration of death in Western societies and its limited treatment in design studies, where it is often reduced to objectoriented interventions. In response, it highlights speculative design as a method to problematize conventional end-of-life
practices and to envision alternative futures; ranging from ecological death rituals to digital memorialization and interspecies mourning. By conceptualizing More-Than-Death, the paper argues for incorporating death discourse into design practice and
education as a catalyst for rethinking sustainability, mortality, and coexistence in the Post-Anthropocene.

    ABSTRACT:

The intersection of design and narrative plays a crucial role in shaping meaningful experiences. While narrative experience has been explored in product design, its role in service design remains underdeveloped. This study introduces a narrative-driven service design approach, integrating narrative to enhance user experiences. Using a Research through Design methodology, ten digital service prototypes were developed, embedding “stories of moments of joy” as a design foundation. Findings suggest that starting with narratives fosters deeper emotional engagement and enhances service interactions. Participant feedback highlights how this approach provides an alternative to traditional problem-solving models, emphasizing narrative-driven innovation in service design. By positioning narrative as a central design element, this study contributes to advancing service design methodologies.

In an era of growing uncertainty, the significance of narratives in design and innovation has gained widespread recognition. While Design-Driven Innovation (DDI) has highlighted the potential of language-based approaches, the mechanisms through which Design Narratives (DNs) foster innovation remain insufficiently understood. This paper explores the fundamental characteristics and roles of Design Narratives, as identified through recent research. By introducing a Narrative- Driven perspective on design activities, the author proposes a novel paradigm of “Design Narratives as Worldmaking.” This perspective underscores the potential of design to address an increasingly complex and sophisticated range of challenges by uncovering new dimensions of narrative in design.

    Abstract
Narratives have become increasingly prominent in both design and innovation management. As a fundamental aspect of human cognition and a mode of communication, the role of narrative in design and innovation processes has been emphasized. Human beings have been acknowledged as “homo narrans”, who, in and through stories, learn about, make sense of, and act in and on the world. They perceive, think, imagine and make ethical choices through narrative structures. Despite recent studies exploring the roles and characteristics of narratives and storytelling in design and innovation, there remains a gap in understanding how design narratives can influence innovation processes. This doctoral research aims to investigate the fundamental characteristics of design narratives in the design innovation process. By addressing the knowledge gap between design studies and innovation management studies, identified through both academic and practical reviews, this study seeks to establish a theoretical foundation for Design Narratives in innovation. Initially, the study constructs a conceptual framework to address the central issue. Through interdisciplinary conceptualization among design studies, innovation management, and narrative studies, following a contextual review, key premises and assumptions are woven together. Specifically, “Design Narratives as Worldmaking” can facilitate and coordinate the co-evolution of problem and solution spaces in the design innovation process. Subsequently, three dimensions of narratives—typologies, functions, and elements—are constructed to explore different aspects of narrative characteristics, which are fundamental facets argued in narratology. This research employs qualitative and exploratory research methods, grounded in a social constructivist worldview. Methodologically, it adopts a mixed method design, utilizing two qualitative methods: protocol analysis as the core component and a multiple-case study as a supplementary component. Following the initial research phase, which includes a contextual review, a systematic literature review, and expert interviews, the main research activity is defined as a mixed method design of the “QUAL+qual” model. The outcomes of this study have made significant contributions to both academia and practical applications in design community. It has generated valuable academic insights by enhancing our understanding of how design narratives impact the innovation process and by developing a conceptual framework based on existing theoretical and empirical knowledge. Moreover, this research promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue among various fields, including design studies, innovation management, and narrative studies. In terms of practical implications, this study offers actionable guidance for companies, innovation practitioners, and design professionals aiming to utilize design as a catalyst for innovation. It introduces a fresh perspective on design, framing it as a practice of worldmaking through narrative and discourse. Additionally, the findings shed new light on how design practitioners can effectively serve as agents of narrative worldmaking. Finally, this PhD research holds broader societal implications. Given the multitude of complex challenges facing the world, this study underscores the crucial role of design narratives in harnessing interdisciplinary expertise to address these challenges confidently. Particularly for wicked problems characterized by hyper-complexity and ambiguity, the theoretical framework of “Design Narrative Worldmaking (DNW)” emerges as vital practices for creating and implementing innovative solutions. By illuminating new dimensions of narrative in design, design has the potential to emerge as a central solution to a wide array of increasingly intricate and sophisticated problems.

In our progressively digitalized society, a burgeoning interest surrounds the realm of digital-related wellbeing. Often interchangeably termed as digital wellness, this phenomenon encapsulates the multifaceted impact of digital technology and the Internet on an individual's overarching health and contentment. It delves into the intricate interplay of digital devices, social media, and online platforms, examining their influence on physical and mental wellbeing, social connections, and the overall quality of life. The preceding study defines digital wellbeing as a subjective individual experience, representing an optimal balance between the benefits and drawbacks derived from mobile connectivity. While it is a well-established fact that digital technologies can have adverse effects on wellbeing, such as increased screen time and strained personal and social relations, it is crucial to recognize their potential for positive impact. Beyond mitigating the negative consequences, it is equally important to propose novel solutions that leverage digital technologies positively. This chapter introduces case studies illustrating the design of digital wellbeing experiences, moving beyond the conventional notion of digital wellbeing as a mere balance between the benefits and drawbacks. It underscores “a better digital wellbeing” as a concept for more meaningful interactions, aiming to enhance individuals' overall experience. Furthermore, the chapter outlines potential directions for future research, educational initiatives, and practical applications in this evolving domain.

  • Narrative Worlding Tracing Personal Journeys That Bridge Past, Present, and Future Through Strategic Service Design

Shuji Bue Yoheisuleyman Kilinc Katsuyuki Matsui Noritaka Minematsu Kosuke Sakamoto, Yasuyuki Hayama

    2026.4

     More details

Narrative Worlding is a collection presenting projects rooted in students’ personal histories and responses to contemporary dissonances. It emerges from a shift away from solving predefined social issues, instead beginning with the individual to explore lived experiences and inner curiosities. Through strategic service design as a tool for “Worlding,” the projects unearth hidden relationality between self and world, weaving disparate timelines into narratives of “Co-becoming” that envision a future embracing deep interdependence.

Outline of Social Contribution and International Cooperation activities

  • [Summary of Social Contribution Activities]
Through collaboration with local communities and industries, I have actively engaged in returning the knowledge of design and service innovation to society. These efforts include co-creative projects with local governments and companies, workshops for the general public and high school students, and contributions to media outlets. By disseminating research and educational outcomes beyond the university, I aim to contribute to social problem-solving and value creation.

    [Summary of International Collaboration Activities]
I have actively participated in joint research and educational programs with universities and research institutions across Europe, the United States, and Asia. In addition to presenting at and organizing international conferences, I have collaborated on design projects with overseas institutions and supervised international students. These initiatives have helped to build a global academic network and promote the internationalization of education and research.
