< Research >  I am conducting research on computer image processing and recognition. I have studied the problems of motion detection and reconstruction of 3D depth information by matching multiple images, as well as the extraction and clustering of color information using the Fuzzy Hough transform. In recent years, we have been studying image quality improvement processing methods, especially image enhancement and high-resolution processing, from various perspectives, and the image quality evaluation methods before and after processing, which are key to such processing, are also a major theme of our research. In the process of increasing image resolution and improving image quality, the image enlargement and interpolation process, which is called super-resolution image processing, is indispensable for TVs, etc., where high resolution is rapidly advancing. In 2020, we started working on the generation of high-resolution images using machine learning. In particular, as a method to generate a clear high-resolution face image from a very low-resolution face image, we are researching a method to control the generated image by adding so-called attribute information such as gender, age, and facial expression. The advantage of this method is that it is possible to adjust how the attribute information is applied in a way that is close to human sensation. We are also studying a machine learning method for super-resolution processing of moving images. Compared to super-resolution processing from a single image, the use of information in the time axis direction can be expected to achieve higher resolution with greater precision. < Education >  I am in charge of teaching courses on image processing using computers. I educate students on various types of digital image processing backed by theory, referring to analog signal processing and mathematical knowledge. I also teach programming, which is indispensable for digital image processing, and show through exercises that digital images can actually be processed by programming based on various theories and the effects of such programming.

    We propose a technique using geometry buffers for real-time rendering of 3D ink-wash paintings. According to the characteristics of hand-drawn ink-wash paintings, contour lines and coloring area in the ink paintings are stylized by rendering 3D models to 2D texture images. Entire rendering computation is implemented with a GPU for enabling its real-time processing on commercially available computers.

    「補間拡大画像のための画素間差分値の3乗を用いた鮮鋭化」
    画像の高解像度化のためには補間が必要であるが、補間処理は通常標本点間を滑らかに接続することを基本とするため、エッジ等はぼやけてしまうことが多い。従って、単純な補間処理ではなく何らかの鮮鋭化効果を伴うことが望ましい。鮮鋭化の方法としては、一般には、ラプラシアン等の線形フィルタが用いられることが多いが、本研究では、線形フィルタ処理値の3乗ではなく、各画素間の差分の3乗を用いる方法を提案した。この方法によって通常の補間によって得られた画像に対しても効果的な鮮鋭化ができ、目標とする高精細な画像に、より近い画像が得られることを実験で示した。

    We propose a method for non-photorealistic halftoning by mean color-preserving contrast enhancement. The proposed method enhances the contrast between two colors adjacent to each other on an image plane, while keeping the mean color constant. Inspired by ceremonial two-tone paper cords used in Japan, we apply the proposed contrast enhancement method to the generation of weaving patterns on output images. In our experiment, we show non-photorealistically halftoned images with three kinds of weaving patterns: plain, twill and Dutch weavings that are further enhanced by a gamma correction-based method, and demonstrate the coexistence of the weaving patterns and the original appearance of input images on the resultant halftone images.

    We propose a method for non-photorealistic color halftoning by an inverse box filter, that restores box blur in an iterative manner. The inverse box filter is a kind of sharpening filter, the characteristic of which is applicable to non-photorealistic halftoning. Experimental results show that the proposed method generates non-photorealistic halftone patterns on output images, where different patterns and sizes of the filter kernel bring different halftone patterns. Additionally, we present a memory-efficient method for implementing the inverse box filter, and demonstrate that the method is more effective than the original one.

    We propose a method for hierarchical data clustering based on iterative bilateral filter, which is an iterative version of bilateral filter, a nonlinear edge-preserving smoothing filter. Experimental results with a 2D point data demonstrate that the proposed method captures the hierarchical cluster structure in the dataset. We also present a memory-efficient method for implementing the proposed method, and experimentally show that the memory-efficient method converges faster than the original method. The convergence of given dataset to a single point is visually confirmed by applying the proposed method to the task of image segmentation, where any image converges to a uniform image.
