    While high-directivity terahertz (THz) links offer physical layer security (PLS), widely used intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) systems are highly vulnerable to single-tone jamming. In this paper, we experimentally characterize this vulnerability by evaluating the jamming efficiency across various frequency offsets, data rates, and jamming-to-signal ratios (J/S). Our analysis reveals that the jamming impact is most critical within a narrow frequency window. This vulnerability suggests that frequency hopping (FH) is an effective countermeasure, as it prevents the signal from dwelling in this critical window. The threat from powerful follower jammers, however, necessitates extremely high hopping rates, as the dwell time on any single frequency must be insufficient for the jammer to respond. To this end, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a wideband and ultra-fast THz FH system enabled by an electro-optically wavelength tunable laser. The system achieves a record hopping rate of up to 75 Mhops/s over a wide 40 GHz span. This hopping rate is four orders of magnitude faster than that of conventional thermo-optically tunable laser-based methods. It supports real-time and seamless 6.25 Gb/s communication with a bit error rate (BER) below 6.0 × 10<sup>-4</sup>. Furthermore, our analysis shows that this ultra-fast FH rate markedly limits the physical locations where a follower jammer can be effective. This vulnerable area is reduced by over an order of magnitude, effectively being constrained to a narrow corridor along the line-of-sight (LOS) path. This work demonstrates a significant security enhancement for practical THz wireless links.

    Terahertz (THz) intensity modulation technology is crucial for future low-cost 6G networks but is vulnerable to jamming. While frequency hopping (FH) counters single-tone jamming, our evaluation demonstrates its weakness against modulated jamming. Specifically, we demonstrated that while FH with a 40 GHz carrier separation is effective against single-tone jamming, it fails against modulated jamming. To address the vulnerability, we propose a self-coherent THz system where the transmitter generates both the radio frequency and local oscillator signals. This architecture separates the desired signal from the modulated jamming for secure communication. Moreover, using wavelength-tunable lasers for FH, the system resists both modulated and single-tone jamming. We demonstrate secure 1-Gbit/s transmission at 275 GHz against a 235 GHz modulated jamming signal and the reverse case. This cost-effective scheme improves THz link resilience to multiple jamming types and supports secure THz wireless communications.

    <p>We propose a photonics-based frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) system to enhance the physical layer security of terahertz communication. The system employs an electro-optical wavelength tunable laser to realize nanosecond-scale frequency hopping across eight distinct channels in the 300-GHz-band. Both deterministic step-like and random hopping patterns are experimentally demonstrated, verifying the flexibility of the proposed approach. A uni-traveling carrier photodiode is utilized as the photomixer, enabling efficient terahertz signal generation and stable operation across all channels. Furthermore, wireless transmission of a 1-Gbit/s on-off keying data stream over a 0.5-m free-space link has been successfully achieved, confirming the practical feasibility of the architecture. These results establish a scalable and high-speed platform for secure terahertz wireless communication, paving the way toward resilient implementations in future 6G networks.</p>

    To address eavesdropping risks in terahertz (THz) wireless communications, we developed a photonics-based THz carrier frequency hopping (FH) system. Our system employed an electro-optically wavelength tunable laser (WTL), enabling pseudo-random hopping by photomixing across three carrier frequencies in the 230-310 GHz range with a 40 GHz interval. Leveraging the ultra-fast wavelength tunability of the electro-optically WTL, nanosecond-level carrier frequency transition time is achieved, which is four orders of magnitude faster than conventional thermo-optically WTL-based THz FH systems. The demonstrated hopping rate of 2.5 × 10-7 hops/s is more than 20000 times higher than conventional systems, significantly reducing eavesdropping risks. Moreover, we demonstrated real-time THz de-hopping using a photonics-based local oscillator (LO) at the receiver, where the LO frequency hopped from 228 to 308 GHz with a 40 GHz interval synchronously to RF. The system down-converted THz signals spanning 80 GHz to a constant 2 GHz intermediate frequency within 1 GHz tolerance, reducing the signal processing device's bandwidth by 40-fold at the receiver. Additionally, we demonstrated FH frequency shift keying (FSK) communication at 500 Mbit/s with a bit error rate of 2.5 × 10-3 only driven by the electro-optically WTL without external modulator. Notably, the proposed THz FH/FSK system not only enhanced security against eavesdropping but also minimized the cost of peripheral electronic device, facilitating the practical deployment of THz wireless networks.

    We propose an analog radio-over-fiber (RoF) based photomixing architecture that completely decouples data modulation from optical phase control for THz beam steering. In the proposed system, a digitally modulated RF subcarrier (e.g., 16QAM on 7-GHz subcarrier) drives an intensity modulator to imprint data onto one of two optical carriers, while the relative optical phase between the lasers is independently adjusted to tune the phase of the THz carrier generated by photomixing, thus separating the modulation and beam-steering controls. Experimental results confirmed high-order data transmission of up to 32QAM at a maximum baud rate of 600 MBaud and accurate THz beam steering of up to 20° at the 300 GHz THz carrier. Furthermore, during beam steering with a 100-MBaud 16QAM signal, no constellation distortion was observed, confirming simultaneous data modulation and beam control. These results indicate that the proposed analog RoF approach enables high-order wireless data transmission and stable THz beam control.

    Photonic integrated circuits provide a wide range of capabilities for customizable datacom as well as sensory systems in chemical and biological applications. However, the circuit integration of light sources, particularly lasers, remains challenging and costly. Here, we show how the emission from ink-jet-printed microdisk laser resonators can be coupled to a vertically stacked photonic integrated circuit. We print dye-doped microdisks with a lasing threshold below 100 µJ/mm2 and realize vertical coupling of whispering gallery modes in wedge-shaped resonator geometries to silicon nitride waveguides employing accurate alignment in height and lateral dimensions. The ink-jet-printed disks can be doped with a wide variety of functional materials and allow for circuit reconfiguration, thus providing novel functionalities, including low-cost lasers, on a compact and stable chip platform for a wide range of applications.

    We propose an all-optical terahertz (THz) multi-beam generation method that forms multiple spatially independent beams by optically multiplexing distinct wavelength pairs in a photomixer array. In this approach, wavelength-dependent delays induced by fiber chromatic dispersion impose precise phase gradients across array elements, enabling all-optical beam steering and multi-beam formation without any electronic phase shifters. In proof-of-concept experiments, two 300-GHz beams were simultaneously generated at -29° and +17°, in close agreement with the designed -30° and +20°. The identical beam directions observed in both single- and dual-beam operations confirm that each wavelength pair independently controls its corresponding THz beam. This concept demonstrates a compact, passive, and energy-efficient platform for wavelength-domain multi-beam control using standard fiber components.

    We developed a high-speed terahertz beam steering system using a fast wavelength-tunable laser, chromatic dispersion of optical fibers, and an arrayed photomixer. Using this system, we successfully achieved nanosecond-order high-speed beam steering of terahertz waves toward two directions separated by 45°.

    We propose and construct a 6-channel THz-FDM system (5 Gbit/s per channel) that simultaneously generates THz beat signals using a single UTC-PD and achieves frequency separation in the optical domain.     This study presents a seamless optical-to-THz wireless communication system leveraging cross-gain modulation (XGM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The proposed system enables efficient multi-level modulation without requiring external modulators, simplifying the architecture while enhancing modulation flexibility. We demonstrate 10 Gbit/s on-off keying (OOK) and multi-level modulation (QPSK, 16QAM) through XGM-based photomixing. Experimental results confirm the feasibility of high-speed THz transmission with a carrier frequency of 260–320 GHz. Although QPSK and 16QAM have been demonstrated in previous THz systems based on coherent modulation, those approaches typically require precise wavelength tuning of the optical carriers and coherent detection at the receiver. Our system overcomes this limitation by utilizing SOA-based XGM, enabling modulation-format-independent optical-to-THz conversion. Furthermore, we demonstrate the applicability of radio-over-fiber (RoF) subcarrier modulation to achieve multi-level modulation (QPSK and 16QAM) via XGM-based photomixing.

    Terahertz (THz) communication above 100 GHz is widely recognized as a key enabler for sixth-generation (6G) networks because of its ultra-broad bandwidth and strong directionality. Meanwhile, the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence has considerably weakened conventional cryptographic methods at the network layer, making THz physical layer security increasingly critical. THz links are inherently susceptible to jamming and eavesdropping, which calls for dedicated security mechanisms that integrate physical structures with advanced signal processing. This review summarizes recent advances in two complementary directions. The first addresses signal domain strategies, including frequency hopping spread spectrum techniques, channel modeling, and artificial noise injection, to strengthen confidentiality and robustness against intentional interference. The second focuses on spatial domain strategies, where intelligent reflecting surfaces and beam steering architectures leverage topological diversity to reduce interception risks. This review also discusses the practical challenges these techniques may face in future 6G scenarios and identifies potential directions for further research.

    Advanced two-dimensional (2D) beam steering is essential for unlocking the full potential of terahertz (THz) systems in future 6G communications and high-resolution imaging. However, achieving wide-angle, high-speed, and high-precision 2D beam control within a compact THz platform remains a significant challenge. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate an optoelectronic (Formula presented.) THz antenna array that enables flexible 2D beam steering, beam hopping, and beam scanning around the 300 GHz band. This work employs a (Formula presented.) microstrip patch antenna (MPA) array directly driven by InGaAs/InP UTC-PDs on a silicon carbide (SiC) substrate. The relative phases of the four radiating elements are precisely programmed using an optical phased array (OPA), which provides fully decoupled and low-latency phase control in the optical domain. Experimentally, we demonstrate 2D beam steering and 2D beam hopping among three representative directions at a polar angle of (Formula presented.) and azimuth angles of (Formula presented.), (Formula presented.), and (Formula presented.). Furthermore, continuous 2D beam scanning at a fixed polar angle of (Formula presented.) is achieved, enabling a full (Formula presented.) azimuth sweep within 0.43 s while maintaining high beam quality. These results confirm that the proposed UTC-PD based (Formula presented.) MPA array provides a practical and robust approach for 2D THz beam manipulation, and offers strong potential for future 6G wireless links and THz imaging applications.

    In future 6G systems, terahertz (THz) waves are expected to be essential for enabling extremely high-capacity wireless communication. For such systems, efficient separation of multiple THz waves is required. A diffraction grating enables simple direct detection. Therefore, we designed a blazed grating optimized for THz beam separation. The grating was fabricated using a low-cost 3D printing process with a conductive coating, resulting in a simple structure that enables effective beam separation. Experimental results confirmed high-efficiency beam separation in the 300 GHz band, and 15 Gbit/s wireless communication was successfully demonstrated under these conditions. These results indicate that the proposed blazed grating provides a promising solution as a practical approach for THz wave receivers in future 6G wireless communication networks.

    We propose a cost-effective and hardware simplified photonics-based terahertz (THz) linear frequency modulated (LFM) signal generation system. The system utilizes only a single ultra-fast wavelength tunable laser leveraging electro-optic effect combined with commercial fiber self-delay. A crossed-dual-chirp, which consists of simultaneous up-chirp and down-chirp THz LFM signals within the same 400 ns period was generated with a bandwidth of 14.6 GHz and center frequency of 284 GHz. A high chirp rate of 0.0365 GHz/ns was achieved using only a low-cost voltage controller operating at MHz frequency. This cost-effective yet high-performance solution generates crossed-dual-chirp waveforms that are expected to mitigate the Doppler error, making it suitable for high-speed target detection. The proposed system demonstrates significant advantages in practical applications, as it successfully balances performance requirements with implementation complexity.

    While photonic phased array antennas (PAAs) show promise in addressing terahertz (THz) path loss challenges, their inherent frequency dependence limits wideband THz wireless communications and sensing (e.g., frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) for THz radar systems and frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) for THz secure communications) by causing beam distortion during frequency changes. To overcome this, we propose and demonstrate a novel photonic beam steering technique that achieves frequency-independent operation using a pre-calibrated, feed-forward compensation scheme. The system independently adjusts array element phases using an OPA and photomixers to maintain stable beam direction during both frequency hopping and sweeping operations. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in beam intensity stability compared to conventional systems across different operating modes. During carrier frequency hopping between 290 GHz and 305 GHz, the system achieves a 1.29 dB enhancement in beam intensity stability and a 1.62 dB increase in minimum received signal strength compared to systems without phase control. During continuous frequency sweeping operations, our approach reduces beam pointing directivity variation by 76.51% and beam width variation by 67.65% across the entire bandwidth. Additionally, our technology enables synchronized beam-direction switching with frequency changes, allowing for custom beam direction settings based on frequency. This approach paves the way for next-generation THz systems in high-security communications, high-resolution radar, advanced sensing, and other emerging fields that demand frequency changing within PAAs.

    In future 6G systems, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in the terahertz (THz) band are emerging as a key technology. Photomixing-based approaches offer advantages for the generation and control of THz waves due to their wide bandwidth and frequency tunability. This paper proposes and experimentally demonstrates a THz-band ISAC system that employs high-speed wavelength tunable lasers. Leveraging the rapid wavelength tunability of the laser, the system simultaneously generates a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar signal and a frequency-shift keying (FSK) communication signal. Experimental results show successful ranging with a centimeter-level distance measurement error using a 7.9 GHz sweep-bandwidth THz-FMCW signal. The system achieves a short repetition period of 800 ns, significantly enhancing real-time performance in dynamic environments. Moreover, 2FSK communication at 2 Gbit/s was demonstrated without the use of an external modulator, achieving a BER below the HD-FEC threshold. These results confirm that radar and communication functionalities can be integrated into a single transmitter. The proposed system contributes to reducing system complexity and cost and offers a promising solution for 6G applications.

    This paper proposes and experimentally demonstrates a novel physical-layer encryption scheme for terahertz (THz) wireless communication based on a logical AND operation between dual THz beams transmitted from spatially separated sources. Unlike previous studies, confined to chip-scale or waveguide configurations, our approach validates the concept under free-space transmission, thereby highlighting its applicability to real wireless environments. The system utilizes uni-traveling carrier photodiodes (UTC-PDs) to generate independent THz carriers, and coherent detection combined with envelope extraction enables analog-domain realization of the AND operation. Experimental results confirm successful decryption at data rates up to 1.5 Gbit/s, achieving bit error rates (BERs) below the forward error correction threshold (e.g., 3.13 × 10<sup>−10</sup> at 500 Mbit/s). Furthermore, spatial mapping and simulation show strong agreement with measurements, yielding a predictive accuracy of approximately 84% and validating spatial selectivity as a security feature. These findings establish the novelty of applying dual-beam logical operations for secure THz transmission and provide a foundation for scalable, low-complexity physical-layer security in next-generation wireless networks.

    Dynamic and large-scale user access through frequency switching in the terahertz (THz) band is highly anticipated. Previously, we demonstrated multi-level frequency modulation using THz frequency switching via photomixing with a tunable laser diode (TLD) and a fixed-frequency laser. Additionally, we proposed a compact THz generation method using a single TLD. In this study, we integrated these methods and demonstrated, for the first time, THz frequency switching in the J-band (220-330 GHz) using a single TLD. In the experiment, successful switching among three frequencies within the J-band was achieved using a high-speed TLD.

    A photomixing-based frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) system is effective for future secure terahertz (THz) wireless communications. Conventional photomixing systems are typically composed of two lasers, which result in an increased system size and power consumption. To address this issue, we applied our proposed THz wave generation method, using a single wavelength-tunable laser, to the FHSS system. In the experiments, we successfully demonstrated a J-band (220–330 GHz) FHSS system with a frequency-hopped interval of 400 ns.

    A terahertz (THz) wave generator for multiplying the output power from arrayed photomixers is developed. The generator is composed of two uni-traveling carrier photodiodes (UTC-PDs) as the photomixers, a 2 × 1 T-junction power combiner and a microstrip rectangular patch antenna on a silicon carbide (SiC) substrate in which photocurrents of 300 GHz from the UTC-PDs are combined to be fed to the antenna. Experimental results show that the output power is multiplied by 5.8 dB (approximately fourfold) compared to that of a single UTC-PD. This advancement has the potential for further multiplication of THz power by cascaded combining of a larger number of UTC-PDs.

    Whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators, renowned for their high Q-factors and narrow line widths, are widely utilized in integrated photonics. Integrating diffraction gratings onto WGM cavities has gained significant attention because these gratings function as azimuthal refractive index modulators, enabling single-mode WGM emissions and supporting beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM). The introduction of curved grating structures facilitates guided mode resonances by coupling high-order diffracted waves with leaking modes from the waveguide. These gratings act as wavelength-selective mirrors and support concentric circular radial-guided modes. This study investigates the coexistence and interaction between OAM-carrying WGMs and radial-guided modes with Bessel beam characteristics in an active cladding grating-integrated microring laser. These phenomena are examined through both three-dimensional simulations and experiments. The active layer enhances the radial-guided modes at the microring’s center, where cylindrical waves from the active cladding produce strong guided mode resonance at specific wavelengths corresponding to radial modes. Additionally, general WGMs are formed and confined within the microring. The effects of grating depth and microring size on radial-guided mode resonance are evaluated through two-dimensional simulations and experiments. These insights pave the way for integrating functional lasers into photonic circuits and advancing technologies for topological optical vortex emission and manipulation.

    We incorporate a passive wedge-shaped organic microdisk supporting spatially separated whispering gallery modes into an SU-8 photonic integrated circuit (PIC) by using direct inkjet printing. This innovative method allows the mixing of multiple organic materials, enabling tunability of the refractive index of microdisks, thereby overcoming limitations of single-material resonators from conventional lithography. In this study, the microdisk resonator, with a refractive index matching that of SU-8 by mixing hyperbranched polymers, is mounted horizontally to an optical waveguide, achieving directional coupling between the microdisk and PIC at a wavelength of 1550 nm. Geometrical conditions for successful coupling were obtained by measuring the cross-sectional profile of the fabricated structure's surface via atomic force microscopy, determining ways to adjust the coupling efficiency.

    A high-power UTC-PD on a SiC substrate has achieved 5 mW output power and 87 GHz bandwidth in the 300-GHz band. This breakthrough was accomplished using a compact WR3.4 waveguide module and Y-junction power combiner.

    本研究開発は、日本が得意とする超高速フォトニクスデバイス、電子顕微鏡、GaN系の異分野技術融合により、光電子が空間走行する真空マイクロフォトニクスデバイスを創成し、ハイパワーテラヘルツ波発生器実現を目指している。基盤技術として、光電効果のための半導体フォトカソードとフォトダイオードの材料技術の融合、半導体内空間形成技術を確立する。これにより、300GHz帯電波の100倍以上の出力、100 Gbit/s以上のスループットが実現される。これら研究開発とともに、社会実装へ向けた想定ユーザとの共同研究・技術協力関係の推進、標準化活動によりBeyond 5Gの社会実装が加速される。
