    Sediment temperature characteristics and their relation to distribution patterns of two sentinel crab species in intertidal flats in western Japan
    Abstract

    In the context of global climate change, monitoring focused on temperature and benthic animals in intertidal flats and the development of metrics to assess climate change and ecosystem responses are essential for a sustainable society. However, few studies have assessed the relationship between intertidal sediment temperature and the distribution of benthic animals. To address this gap, in the present study, intertidal sediment temperatures were observed in 12 intertidal flats in 11 survey areas over 335 days, from October 2, 2019, to August 31, 2020, using water temperature data loggers. The characteristics of intertidal sediment temperatures were variable among the survey areas, and a correlation analysis suggested that such characteristics are possibly influenced by various spatial-scale factors, such as geographical, basin, and habitat scales. Furthermore, two sentinel crab species, Macrophthalmus japonicus and Macrophthalmus banzai were collected, and the number of wintering individuals of each species was estimated based on their carapace width to analyze the changes in abundances of the two species in each survey area. The results show that the number of days with daily minimum temperature ≥ 19 °C was the factor that influenced the abundance rate, suggesting that M. japonicus and M. banzai populations may decrease and increase, respectively, according to future climate change in Japan. Our findings emphasize the importance of long-term monitoring of sediment temperatures and benthic animals in intertidal flats to evaluate the influence of future climate change.

    Spawning habitat suitability maps for the conservation of the tri‐spine horseshoe crab <scp>Tachypleus tridentatus</scp> in Tsuyazaki Cove, Fukuoka, Japan
    Abstract

    The suitable spawning habitat of Tachypleus tridentatus was estimated and mapped for the first time using scientific modelling in Tsuyazaki, Fukuoka, Japan. A total of 43 nests were found at five sites from 2018 to 2019. Of these 43 nests, the location information of nine nests at one of the sites was used as ‘Training data’ for constructing the models.

    A series of procedures was employed to determine the relationship between the biological data and their physical parameters to estimate the suitable spawning habitat. First, the contribution rates of the physical parameters (beach elevation, slope and sediment) to nest locations were evaluated. Second, physical parameters that showed significant contribution rates were chosen to estimate suitable spawning habitats.

    It was found that the beach elevation was the most significant parameter for estimating suitable spawning habitats. Mean high water neap to mean higher high water was estimated as suitable spawning habitat, and 74% of the nests were fitted in an area assessed as suitable. The result was consistent with previous studies.

    The area of suitable spawning habitat was estimated to be only 476 m2 out of 1943 m2, comprising 24% of the sandy beach in the study site. Therefore, it was concluded that the conservation and restoration of spawning grounds is a high‐priority and urgent issue at the site.

    It is proposed that scientific modelling of nest/egg occurrence and beach elevation can effectively determine suitable spawning habitats. Thus, it is possible to quickly establish the habitat most suitable for spawning in coastal environments and help plan conservation strategies for this globally endangered species.

    First record and habitat of Bembidion nakamurai (Morita, 2008) (Coleoptera: Carabidae) from the Kuma River, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan
    The second location where Bembidion nakamurai was discovered and recorded in Kumamoto Prefecture. B. nakamurai had previously been known from only one location in Kagoshima Prefecture.     DEVELOPMENT OF A SEDIMENT PARTICLE SIZE PREDICTION METHOD FOR TIDAL FLAT BASED ON IMAGE ANALYSIS USING DEEP LEARNING
    Our study aimed to develop a simple particle size estimation method for tidal flats and to verify its applicability for sediment classification of tidal flats. We conducted 1) the survey of the particle size distribution of tidal flats and photographing of the surface layer at 51 points located at the mouth of the Saba River in Yamaguchi Prefecture and 2) the estimation of the particle size by image analysis using machine learning from the surface photographs. The results showed that the tidal flat surfaces with mud content of less than 20&#37; and those with mud content of 20&#37; or greater could be discriminated from the images with an accuracy of approximately 73&#37;. Next, tidal flat images were classified into four categories of mud contents using machine learning; less than 15&#37;, 15&#37; to 25&#37;, 25&#37; to 35&#37;, and 35&#37; or more. The percentages of correct images in each category were 72&#37;, 48&#37;, 45&#37;, and 75&#37;, respectively. These results suggest that the machine learning image analysis used in this study can improve the accuracy of the discrimination when the partition of the mud content is set to be coarser.

    Electronic decision-support tools are becoming an essential component of government strategies to tackle non-native species invasions. This study describes the development and application of a multilingual electronic decision-support tool for screening terrestrial animals under current and future climate conditions: the Terrestrial Animal Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (TAS-ISK). As an adaptation of the widely employed Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), the TAS-ISK question template inherits from the original Weed Risk Assessment (WRA) and related WRA-type toolkits and complies with the ‘minimum requirements’ for use with the recent European Regulation on invasive alien species of concern. The TAS-ISK consists of 49 basic questions on the species’ biogeographical/historical traits and its biological/ecological interactions, and of 6 additional questions to predict how climate change is likely to influence the risks of introduction, establishment, dispersal and impact of the screened species. Following a description of the main features of this decision-support tool as a turnkey software application and of its graphical user interface with support for 32 languages, sample screenings are provided in different risk assessment areas for one representative species of each of the main taxonomic groups of terrestrial animals supported by the toolkit: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, annelids, insects, molluscs, nematodes, and platyhelminths. The highest-scoring species were the red earthworm Lumbricus rubellus for the Aegean region of Turkey and the New Zealand flatworm Arthurdendyus triangulatus for Croatia. It is anticipated that adoption of this toolkit will mirror that of the worldwide employed AS-ISK, hence allowing to share information and inform decisions for the prevention of entry and/or dispersal of (high-risk) non-native terrestrial animal species – a crucial step to implement early-stage control and eradication measures as part of rapid-response strategies to counteract biological invasions.

    Temporal changes in benthos at intertidal zones' communities in the Kuma River system: ecological monitoring before, during, and after the Arase dam removal
    Few studies have investigated the response of estuarine ecosystems to high dam removal with embankment heights exceeding 15 m. Focusing on the Arase dam removal project in the Kuma River system, we surveyed the intertidal zones in the Kuma and Mae River estuaries between 2011 (before the removal) and 2018 (after the removal) to assess the changes in sediment conditions and benthic fauna. A total of 14 surveys were conducted in the fall and spring, with a total of 178 sites, of which 138 sites were used for the analysis. Coarse-graining was observed in the spring of 2012 and 2014, which may have been associated with the permanent gate opening of the Arase Dam in 2010 and the flush in 2011. The results of the benthos community analysis indicated that the changes in the fauna at each site were not based on the specific survey period or season. Therefore, it is possible that the dam removal had no significant impact on the estuarine benthic community. However, the number of infaunal species in both estuaries increased from the fall of 2012 to approximately 2014. During the same period, the occurrence of the mud and ghost shrimps increased, as were the number of symbiotic species that inhabit these shrimp burrows. The coarse-graining of the sediment in the intertidal zones may have expanded the habitat of these species, which are commonly found at sand and sandy mud flats. Since the relationship between the observed changes in the benthos community and the Arase Dam removal has not been fully verified, the dynamics of sediment transportation during the removal should be further evaluated.

    Habitat suitability maps for juvenile tri-spine horseshoe crabs in Japanese intertidal zones: A model approach using unmanned aerial vehicles and the Structure from Motion technique
    The tri-spine horseshoe crab, <italic>Tachypleus tridentatus</italic>, is a threatened species that inhabits coastal areas from South to East Asia. A Conservation management system is urgently required for managing its nursery habitats, i.e., intertidal flats, especially in Japan. Habitat suitability maps are useful in drafting conservation plans; however, they have rarely been prepared for juvenile <italic>T</italic>. <italic>tridentatus</italic>. In this study, we examined the possibility of constructing robust habitat suitability models (HSMs) for juveniles based on topographical data acquired using unmanned aerial vehicles and the Structure from Motion (UAV-SfM) technique. The distribution data of the juveniles in the Tsuyazaki and Imazu intertidal flats from 2017 to 2019 were determined. The data were divided into a training dataset for HSM construction and three test datasets for model evaluation. High accuracy digital surface models were built for each region using the UAV-SfM technique. Normalized elevation was assessed by converting the topographical models that consider the tidal range in each region, and the slope was calculated based on these models. Using the training data, HSMs of the juveniles were constructed with normalized elevation and slope as the predictor variables. The HSMs were evaluated using the test data. The results showed that HSMs exhibited acceptable discrimination performance for each region. Habitat suitability maps were built for the juveniles in each region, and the suitable areas were estimated to be approximately 6.1 ha of the total 19.5 ha in Tuyazaki, and 3.7 ha of the total 7.9 ha area in Imazu. In conclusion, our findings support the usefulness of the UAV-SfM technique in constructing HSMs for juvenile <italic>T</italic>. <italic>tridentatus</italic>. The monitoring of suitable habitat areas for the juveniles using the UAV-SfM technique is expected to reduce survey costs, as it can be conducted with fewer investigators over vast intertidal zones within a short period of time.

    徳島県の一級河川那賀川の河口部は,2012 年から地震津波対策事業により堤防がかさ上げされることになり,約 28,000 m2 の汽水環境のうち,約 24%が改変された.この堤防のかさ上げ工事の環境保全対策として,希少底生生物の生息場の保全を目的としたミティゲーションが行われ,2 ヶ所の代償地が造成された.本研究では,対象地に 9 ヶ所の調査地点を設置し,2013 年から 2017 年の間に実施された 10 回のモニタリングによって得られた情報を解析した.まず,4 年間の調査によって,カニ類 33 種,ハゼ類 27 種が確認された.調査期間における希少種の出現パターンから,少なくとも両分類群において,堤防のかさ上げ工事によって生息地が消失した種はいないと推察される.2014 年冬季に多くの調査地点で平均泥分含有率の減少が確認されたが,これは 2014 年 8 月の大規模の出水により泥分が流出,あるいは砂礫が堆積したことに起因すると考えられる.一方,順応的管理の一環として代償地にシルト質の浚渫土を投入したことによって,大規模出水以降に代償地とその付近の調査地点では平均泥分含有率が増加した.9 ヶ所の調査地点は地盤の高い区画(4 地点)と低い区画(5 地点)に分けて解析を行った.地盤の高い区画について解析した結果,2 ヶ所の造成地は,堤防のかさ上げ工事,あるいは大規模出水の影響を受けながらも,遅くとも約 2 年半程度の期間を経て,対照地に類似した生物相が形成されたことが示唆された.地盤の低い区画の場合, 多くの地点で 2014 年 8 月の大規模出水の影響を強く受けて底質環境と生物相が変遷したことが示唆される結果が得られた.また,順応的管理の一環として行 った代償地へのシルトの投入,およびシルトを詰めた土嚢の設置が,潮間帯下部の泥質環境の形成,維持に寄与し,結果として代償地付近では工事前と類似した生物相が形成された.

    The invasion of the Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea (O.F. Müller, 1774), has caused serious ecological and economic problems worldwide. In the Japanese archipelago, C. fluminea has been identified using morphological characteristics in most distribution surveys. However, a recent study has shown that morphology alone cannot be used to identify C. fluminea due to its superficial similarity to the related native species C. leana Prime, 1867. Consequently, the present distribution of C. fluminea is still poorly understood. We surveyed the distribution of C. fluminea on Kyushu Island, Japan, by sequencing the cytochrome b region of the mitochondrial DNA, a region that can be used to distinguish the two clam species, and found that C. fluminea was already established throughout the entire island, except at a single site where Corbicula clams comprised solely of C. leana. In response to this serious situation, we suggest using PCR-RFLP method, which was employed here, to distinguish the two clam species for more effective and rapid surveys.

    本課題では福岡県の河口部を対象として,日本の環境保全・再生の観点から見逃されがちな「高層塩性湿地」に着眼した野外調査を展開する.まず,高層塩性湿地が存在する場と欠落している場の種多様性を比較し,本湿地景観がエコトーンとして機能していることを検証する.次に,塩性湿地の生物情報,および物理化学情報に基づき湿地を類型化することで,湿地タイプごとの特性を把握する.塩性湿地は多面的な生態系サービスを備えながら,近年の豪雨災害への対策のため,掘削による流下能力の確保が求められている.よって本課題は,優れた生態系サービスの譲受と,豪雨災害の回避・被害低減を両立するための重要な一手として期待される.

    First, we explicitly identified stable salinity conditions of buffer waters in shallow underground areas at the boundary between land and sea. In both locations where the backlands were mountain forests and where the backlands were plains, the salinity of surface water fluctuated with the ebb and flow of the tide, whereas the pore water was stable at low salinity. Surface water salinity was influenced by tides and precipitation, while pore water salinity was not influenced by tides and was stable. Porewater on the mountain side was unaffected by not only tide bute also precipitation.
    The benthic fauna of the tidal flats differed between the mountain side and the plain side, with reeds growing on the mountain side, and the benthic species diversity was high. The low salinity of the pore water supports the growth of reeds, and as a result, it can be inferred that the species diversity is high due to the presence of organisms that depend on the reed zone.
