Invasive insects have recently caused significant damage to agricultural and horticultural plants in Japan. In 2017, Thecobathra lambda (Moriuti, 1963) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) was first confirmed in Kyushu, Japan, as an invasive micromoth pest damaging American sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.). This study documented occurrence data for this moth at four sites in Hyogo Prefecture on Honshu and 12 sites in Ehime, Kagawa, and Tokushima on Shikoku, with confirmed occurrence at high density at one site per prefecture. The larvae were first observed in Japan feeding on leaves of Liquidambar formosana Hance in Tokushima. Genetic analyses based on partial nucleotide sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO1) in T. lambda identified seven haplotypes, including two unique ones in the Hyogo and Kagoshima populations, suggesting multiple invasion events or a single invasion event involving large numbers of individuals. Additionally, five parasitoid wasps associated with the larval stage of T. lambda were identified: Diadegma armillatum (Gravenhorst, 1829) (Ichneumonidae; new to Japan), Goniozus japonicus (Ashmead, 1904) (Bethylidae), and Eulophidae gen. sp. 1–3. These wasps emerged from over half of the T. lambda individuals, suggesting their potential as important biocontrol agents in Japan. Notably, genetic analyses of D. armillatum revealed that a haplotype from Hyogo was identical to one from Europe. Given this finding and the broad host range of D. armillatum, it is likely that trans-Eurasian introduction events have occurred, potentially facilitated by human-mediated transportation of agricultural and horticultural plants.

This study reviewed the genus Erechthias Meyrick, 1880 on the Ogasawara Islands, Japan with regards to eight recognized species, two of which were known (E. itoi Moriuti &amp; Kadohara, 1994 and E. zebrina (Butler, 1881)), two of which are newly recorded (E. minuscula (Walsingham, 1897) and E. atririvis (Meyrick, 1931)), and four of which are new species (E. mirabilissp. nov., E. oculussp. nov., E. flavimaculasp. nov., and E. nidumicolasp. nov.). Photographs of adult specimens and of their genitalia as well as illustrations of wing venation are provided. A preliminary phylogenetic tree based on mitochondrial DNA (the partial COI region, DNA barcode region) includes seven Erechthias species. Furthermore, haplotype networks were also constructed using DNA barcode regions for three species distributed across three or more island groups (Mukojima Islands, Chichijima Islands, Hahajima Islands, and other Islands). All examined E. flavimaculasp. nov. and E. nidumicolasp. nov. had unique haplotypes and were divided into three units corresponding to the group of islands.

Japan, an island nation comprising both continental and oceanic islands, is regarded as a biodiversity hotspot with a large number of endemic insect species. Among these, two spilomeline moth species – Duponchelia naitoi Sasaki, 2008, endemic to mainland Japan, and Metasia bilineatella Inoue, 1996, endemic to the Ogasawara Islands – have attracted our attention due to their uncertain generic placements and limited available information. In this study, we investigate the morphology and phylogenetic position of these two species, and accordingly establish a new genus, Micrometasiagen. nov., to accommodate them, providing redescriptions including the first description of the female of M. bilineatella. Additionally, two new congeners are described: Micrometasia ryukyuensissp. nov. from the Ryukyu Islands, and Micrometasia melanatellasp. nov. from the Ogasawara Islands, Japan. Photographs of the adults and genitalia, along with an identification key, are provided. Maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenetic analysis using one mitochondrial (COI) and three nuclear (CAD, EF1α and RpS5) genes places this genus within Steniini – a predominantly detritivorous tribe – yet specifically within a clade whose larval stages remain almost entirely unknown. In addition, intraspecific COI genetic distances and branching order in a neighbour-joining (NJ) tree, together with the distributional patterns of each species raise several biogeographic and evolutionary implications: (1) a case of small-scale radiation accompanied by remarkable morphological divergence on oceanic islands; and (2) at least two possible colonisation routes into the Japanese archipelago, along with the potential presence of undescribed diversity of this genus beyond Japan.

Homalernis fluctuosa Suzuki &amp; Jinbo, sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Tsushima Island, Amamiooshima Island, and Okinawajima Island, Japan. This is not only the first record of the genus Homalernis but also of the tribe Schoenotenini from warm temperate zones in the Palaearctic region. The association of males and females of the new species was confirmed based on the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase submit 1 (COI). We discuss the taxonomic positions of two alleged Homalernis species from Malaysia and the taxonomic position of Homalernis within Schoenotenini.

<p>We discovered an egg batch of a moth species laid on the leaves of <i>Ficus microcarpa</i>(L.f)(Rosales: Moraceae)at Kyushu University. The larvae hatched from the eggs were fed on both <i>F. microcarpa</i> and <i>Morus alba</i>(L.)(Rosales: Moraceae). Mulberry latex is known to be toxic to most lepidopteran larvae, with the exception of a few, such as <i>Bombyx mori</i>(Linnaeus)(Lepidoptera: Bombycidae). However, to our surprise, the larvae developed normally, pupated, and emerged as fertile moths. We also investigated whether the larvae of the species fed on <i>M. alba</i> leaves and developed normally throughout the larval stage. Finally, we identified the species as <i>Spodoptera litura</i>(Fabricius)(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)through observation of the external morphology of the moths and sequencing of the cytochrome oxidase I(COI)gene.</p>

A new species of Caloptilia, C. rhynchosiae n. sp. is described, based on 16 specimens from Japan and Korea. The species is characterized by the presence of the saccular process in the male genitalia. A fabaceous vine, Rhynchosia tomentosa (L.) Hook. &amp; Arn. is reported as the larval host of C. rhynchosiae n. sp. Larval feeding preference, biology and pupation process are described for the species. The species turned out to be host-specific. Two sets of COI barcodes were generated for C. rhynchosiae n. sp. The genetic distances of COI barcodes between the new species and other congeners in the public databases are compared. The conclusion was made that C. rhynchosiae n. sp. was misidentified as C. soyella in the BOLD and GenBank DNA barcode depositories.

<i>Eretmocera artemisiae</i> Li, 2019 (Lepidoptera: Scythrididae) has been reported in China, Korea, and Japan, and its larvae are known to feed on <i>Chenopodium album </i>(Amaranthaceae) in Korea. In this study, a comparison of the male and female genitalia and DNA barcode regions with <i>E. artemisiae </i>collected in Japan, China, and Korea revealed that the genetic distances between the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean populations were small. In addition, new host plants of this species have been identified, suggesting that this species can feed on various plant genera in the family Amaranthaceae.

The genus Palumbina Rondani, 1876 belongs to the family Gelechiidae, which was until recently believed to comprise 26 species worldwide and mainly occurring in the Oriental region. Previously, only P. pylartis (Meyrick, 1908) had been recorded from this genus in Japan. In this study, five other species were identified. Four species were recorded for the first time in Japan, and another was newly described: P. acerosa Lee &amp; Li, 2018; P. grandiunca Lee &amp; Li, 2018; P. macrodelta (Meyrick, 1918), P. operaria (Meyrick, 1918) and P. muraseae Kyaw &amp; Yagi, sp. nov. The host plant and larval feeding habits of P. pylartis, P. acerosa, P. grandiunca, and P. muraseae Kyaw &amp; Yagi, sp. nov. were revealed. The immature stages of P. grandiunca, P. pylartis, and P. muraseae Kyaw &amp; Yagi, sp. nov., including larval and pupal morphology, were first documented for the genus in which the larval chaetotaxy of P. pylartis and P. grandiunca is well observed. In their larval chaetotaxy, the details of their interspecific variation in the relative position and length of some setae are described. The pupal morphology of the species examined in this study is almost identical to the genus Thiotricha except for different traits on the abdominal segments A7 and A10. The traits of larval chaetotaxy and pupal morphology are also discussed for the subfamily. Photographs of the adult, male and female genitalia, and information on their biology and immature stages are provided.

    Abstract

As one of the largest single-radiation sources of phytophagous insects, the higher level phylogeny of lepidopteran lineages has been debated for decades, especially the early divergences of nonditrysia. Here, we use 74 mitochondrial genomes representing seven nonditrysian superfamilies, including the newly sequenced mitochondrial genomes of eight families and 30 species. Four datasets were constructed and used for a phylogenetic analysis based on maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) methods. The results reveal that (1) nonditrysian lineages presented typically nested relationships with the family Micropterigidae as the sister-group to the remaining Lepidoptera, (2) monophyly of major clades in Lepidoptera, including Glossata, Heteroneura, Eulepidoptera and Ditrysia, was strongly supported, and (3) Neopseustoidea formed the sister of the remaining Glossata. Divergence-time analysis estimated that Lepidoptera originated c. 222 Mya during the Middle Triassic and that most superfamilies/families of nonditrysia originated from the Early Cretaceous to the Early Palaeogene, which largely coincided with the radiation of angiosperms. Additionally, three novel gene rearrangements in the gene cluster ‘MIQ’ and ‘TP’ were found in nonditrysian groups. Further mitochondrial genome data will help us to better understand the evolution of early nonditrysian lineages.

In this study, we corrected the misidentified insect pests on yam (Discorea polystachya), based on morphological characters and molecular analysis, and also firstly recorded the species in Korea. The species is a yam borer, Digitivalva hemiglypha Diakonoff & Arita. To accurate pest identification in future utility, genetic divergence within the genus Digitivalva including 43 individuals was calculated by adding samples from Korea and Japan. The intraspecific and interspecific genetic divergences in cytochrome oxidase subunit I, when calculated separately from D. hemiglypha I and D. hemiglypha II, had each constant average values along with other congeneric species: average 0.1% of intraspecific genetic divergence with ranges 0.0–0.7%; average 10.1% of interspecific genetic divergence with ranges 4.0–12.9%. Additionally, Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery results also recognized that two clades of D. hemiglypha were different molecular operational taxonomic units in the substitution models. Consequently, our results indicate that D. hemiglypha I is a correct D. hemiglypha in the cytochrome oxidase subunit I and it also supported by morphological comparison with the holotype of that. All sequences of D. hemiglypha I were nested in the same haplotype, with indicating the rapid dispersal. In further study, D. hemiglypha II will be re-checked as a distinct species of Digitivalva or other genus after examination of their specimens.

Anatrachyntis lunulifera (Meyrick, 1935) (Lepidoptera: Cosmopterigidae) is distributed in the Pacific region, for example, in Fiji and the Marquesas Islands, and larvae of this species feed on the male inflorescence of Pandanus species. In our study, A. lunulifera was collected from Pandanus odorifer (Forssk.) Kuntze in Amami oshima Island, Okinawa-jima Island, and Miyako-jima Island, the Ryukyus, Japan. This article is the first report of A. lunulifera from Japan, North Pacific. In this study, we have redescribed and illustrated the adult, male and female genitalia of A. lunulifera, and illustrated those of A. incertulella (Walker, 1864), another Pandanus feeder occurring together with A. lunulifera in the Ryukyus, for comparison.

The taxonomy and biology of the immature stages of two gelechiid species of Thiotricha Meyrick, 1886, found in the southeastern part of the Sino-Japanese region is presented. Thiotricha lumnitzeriella Kyaw, Ueda & Hirowatari sp. nov., from islands in southwestern Japan is described. The larva of this species feeds as a portable case maker on Lumnitzera racemosa Willd. (Combretaceae). Thiotricha gemmulans Meyrick, 1931 originally described from India is newly recorded from Japan, mainland China, and Thailand. This species feeds as a portable case maker on Glochidion zeylanicum var. lanceolatum (Hayata) and G. zeylanicum var. zeylanicum (Gaertn.) A. Juss (Phyllanthaceae). Thiotricha acrophantis Meyrick, 1936 is newly synonymized with T. gemmulans.                Images of the adults of Thiotricha lumnitzeriella sp. nov. and T. gemmulans including genitalia, and images and illustrations of the larval chaetotaxy and pupa for both species are provided. Larval feeding habits are described in detail.

Asian species of the genus Vespina Davis, 1972 (Lepidoptera, Incurvariidae) are mainly reviewed. Vespina meridiana Hirowatari & Yagi sp. nov. from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, and Vespina sichuana Hirowatari, Huang & Wang sp. nov. from Sichuan, China, are described. The previously known Vespina species are associated with plants from the Fagaceae family on the western coast of the USA and East Asia and with Sapindaceae (Aceraceae) in eastern Europe. The two new species described here are associated with Fagaceae and Myricaceae, respectively, in warm temperate areas in Asia. Vespina nielseni Kozlov, 1987, which was only known from East Asia, is newly recorded from South China. A checklist for the genus is provided herein. Morphological information of the immature stages of the two new species is partially provided. The absence or reduction of a female frenulum and presence of approximately 20 thin pseudofrenular bristles, the dorsoventrally flattened pupa, and the minute tergal spines scattered on abdominal segments 3–8 are considered as possible autapomorphies of Vespina.

A part of Japanese species of the genus Thiotricha Meyrick, 1886 are reviewed. Three species described by Omelko (1984) in the genus Cnaphostola Meyrick, 1918 are placed in combination with Thiotricha; Thiotricha biformis, T. angustella comb. nov. and T. venustalis comb. nov. These species are redescribed, and two new species, T. elaeocarpiella Kyaw, Yagi & Hirowatari, sp. nov. and T. flavitermina Kyaw, Yagi & Hirowatari, sp. nov. are described based on external morphological characters of adults and genitalia of males and females. Thiotricha chujaensis (Park, 2016), comb. nov. described in Cnaphostola from Korea, is newly recorded in Japan feeding on Mallotus japonica (Euphorbiaccae). One of the new species, T. elaeocatpiella sp. nov. has been associated with two different plants, Elaeocarpus zollingeri (Elaeocarpaceae) and Rhaphiolepis indica (Rosaceae). This paper presents the first comprehensive description of the morphology, pupal morphology and biology of species previously treated in the genus Cnaphostola and their relatives in Japan.

Diagnoses and notes on biology and distribution of Japanese species of the suberis and angulifasciella groups of the genus Ectoedemia Busck, 1907 are given. Two species, E. chasanella Puplesis, 1984 and E. ortiva Rociene & Stonis, 2013, are reported for the first time from Japan and their morphology is redescribed. In addition, we provide molecular identification of the two species and their relatives based on COI barcode sequences and the nuclear gene (EF1-alpha) sequences. The female of E. chasanella is described for the first time. We confirm that E. chasanella utilizes Quercus species (Fagaceae) as its hostplant: Q. dentata, Q. serrata, Q. crispula, and Q. acutissima. Ectoedemia ortiva was formerly placed in the suberis group, and its host plant was unknown. We move this species to the angulifasciella group and provide evidence that it utilizes Ulmus sp. (Ulmaceae) as its host plant.

<p><i>Stigmella fumida</i> Kemperman & Wilkinson, 1985 (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) is a common species in Japan with a black frontal tuft at the vertex. During the survey, one specimen with a yellowish-orange frontal tuft was collected. Based on morphological comparison and DNA barcoding, this specimen was <i>S. fumida</i>, and thus, it was revealed that this species has a color variation in the frontal tuft. We also collected <i>S. fumida</i> from <i>Quercus variabilis</i>, a new host plant.</p>

Leaf-mining microlepidoptera are a major group of basal moth lineages. This study focused on closely related species of leaf-mining moths that feed on the same or closely related host plants but which differ in terms of their mine shape and feeding plant parts. The aim was to assess whether these ecological differences contribute to speciation and continued existence of a species. Among various ecological factors, with a forcus on the interaction with parasitoid wasps and symbiotic microorganisms. For symbiotic microorganisms, multiple strains of an unknown Wolbachia were identified, but they were not species-specific or geographically separated. Several species of parasitoid wasp that attacked to multiple moth species with different mining habits on the same plant were discovered, suggesting that various mining habits may contribute to the inhibition of parasitoid wasps learning.
