Sediment control dams are installed in some mountain regions to prevent streambed erosion and excessive sediment runoff, yet their effects on stream function are not well understood. In this study, we examined the effects of a sediment control dam on organic matter decomposition in a mountain stream by comparing upstream and downstream reaches in benthic and hyporheic zones over 5 seasons using the cotton-strip assay. Total decomposition rates, incorporating both macroinvertebrate-mediated and microbial-mediated decomposition, were lower downstream in the benthic zone in the fall and in the hyporheic zone in the summer and fall. Thus, sediment control dams appeared to alter organic matter decomposition rates downstream in some seasons. Environmental factors measured, such as temperature, NO3-N concentrations, and contribution of macroinvertebrates, influenced decomposition rates, but no single factor was sufficient to explain the effects of the dam and its seasonality in this study. Sediment control dams are smaller in size compared to water storage dams but widely distributed in mountain regions of Japan, and their cumulative effects on stream ecosystem function should be evaluated further for the management of mountain streams.

To clarify the relationship between the distribution of vascular plants on the forest floor and topographical factors such as slope aspect and inclination, a survey was conducted in the Ashoro Research Forest (ARF) of the Kyushu University, located in eastern Hokkaido. Nine watersheds in ARF which has north and south facing slope were chosen, and 5 plots (2 m x 4 m) were randomly set at three topographic locations (ridge, mid-slope, and valley floor) to record vascular plant composition of forest floor in natural broadleaved forests. In addition, plot location, slope aspect, slope inclination, and elevation were recorded as topographic factors. As a result, a total of 343 vascular plant species (excluding unidentifiable species) were identified in 270 plots and surroundings at 54 locations. Here we report on the species composition of the plot surveys.

Limited information is available on the particulate forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in runoff from forests. Nonetheless, assessment of particulate content may be crucial for accurately quantifying nitrogen and phosphorus runoff from forested areas. In this study, we examined turbidity, major ionic constituents, and particulate nitrogen and phosphorus in two adjacent streams with different turbidity levels within the Ashoro Research Forest and assessed how turbidity influences particulate nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. To investigate seasonal variations, samples were collected at different times of the year. The results showed that in low turbidity stream water (mean turbidity 0.11 FTU), the proportions of particulate nitrogen and phosphorus relative to total nitrogen and phosphorus were low (2.4% and 1.9%, respectively), whereas in high turbidity stream water (mean turbidity 6.3 FTU), these proportions were substantially higher (28% and 68%, respectively). Concentrations of particulate nitrogen and phosphorus were positively associated with turbidity levels. Temporal variability was more pronounced for the suspended component than for the dissolved component. These results suggest that the need to measure particulate nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations is influenced by river water turbidity, and that a higher frequency of water sampling may be required to estimate particulate matter discharge compared to that required for dissolved matter discharge.

To investigate the effects of cutting on forest dynamics in the management of a Satoyama forest, we established 30 plots in a secondary broadleaved forest in the Kasuya Research Forest, Kyushu University, in 2013. The same year, girth of breast height and tree height for growing trees whose girth at breast height is larger than 15cm were measured. In January 2014, the entire study area, including plots, was clear-cut and the branches were removed from the forest. In 2023, 10 years after the establishment of the plots, we measured the girth or diameter of breast height of trees over 2 m tall growing in the plots. In this report, we present the results of the tree census in 2013 and 2023.

High levels of atmospheric deposition degrade forest ecosystems and cause ecological problems in streams. The amount of atmospheric deposition in Japan has decreased in recent years, but limited information on how stream water chemistry responds to this change is available. We analyzed historical atmospheric sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) deposition data for Fukuoka City in western Japan from 1992 to 2021 and compared long-term (1986–2023) changes in stream water chemistry at 11 sampling points to evaluate stream water chemistry responses to atmospheric S and N deposition changes. Atmospheric S and N deposition in Fukuoka City increased from the 1990s to the mid-2000s and then decreased to the same as in the 1990s. The sulfate concentration in stream water was significantly lower in 2023 (105 μmol L−1) than 1986 (131 μmol L−1), reflecting changes in atmospheric S deposition. In contrast, the nitrate (NO3−) concentration in stream water was significantly higher in 2023 (107 μmol L−1) than in 1986 (83 μmol L−1) despite atmospheric N deposition decreasing. The calcium counterion concentration was also higher in 2023 (345 μmol L−1) than in 1986 (297 μmol L−1). Partial least squares regression analysis suggested that the NO3− concentration was related to the high percentage of area covered by Japanese cedar trees, which promote calcium leaching. We conclude that large areas of Japanese cedar plantations could attenuate the response of stream NO3− concentrations to the decreased atmospheric N deposition.

The tree species composition has a significant impact on the biogeochemical cycle of forest ecosystems, which in turn affects nutrient leaching and stream water quality. We have formulated a hypothesis that nutrient leaching varies depending on the tree species composition owing to the properties of surface soil chemistry characterized by the tree species composition. To test this hypothesis, we have collected soil water samples below the root zone in Japanese cedar plantations (CF) and natural forests (NF) and compared nutrient leaching. We analyzed major ion chemical characteristics, net N mineralization, and net nitrification in the surface soil (A layer) to determine possible causes for differences in nutrient leaching. Our results revealed that calcium (Ca2+) and nitrate (NO3−) concentrations in soil water below the root zone were significantly higher in CF than in NF. Additionally, the Ca2+ and NO3− contents in surface soil were higher in CF than in NF, which may explain the higher concentrations of Ca2+ and NO3− in soil water in CF. In contrast, there was no significant difference in soil net nitrification rates between CF and NF. Correlations between NO3− and Ca2+ concentrations in soil solution suggest that the higher availability of Ca2+ from surface soils in CF could partially account for the higher NO3− leaching from CF. Our study suggests that the properties of surface soil chemistry characterized by the tree species composition are responsible for causing the differences in nutrient leaching.

Understanding the variability in nitrogen (N) leaching from forested ecosystems and its susceptibility to elevated atmospheric N deposition is essential for assessing the impact of atmospheric N deposition on forested ecosystems. This study explored the site variability in nitrate (NO3−) leaching from forested areas and its susceptibility to elevated atmospheric N deposition from five sites in broadleaved forests grown on Andosols and Cambisols from northern to southern Japan. Site variability of NO3− leaching and its possible contributing factors, including soil parent material and net nitrification rate, were evaluated using a generalized linear model with Akaike’s Information Criterion used for model selection. Three-year experimental N fertilization (50 kg N ha−1 yr−1 as ammonium nitrate) experiments were conducted at each site to evaluate the susceptibility of NO3− leaching to elevated atmospheric N deposition. Soil solution NO3− concentration below the rooting zone (50 cm below the ground surface) was variable among the five sites and was the highest in Shibecha, one of the Andosols sites in northern Japan where soil net nitrification tended to be higher than elsewhere. In model selection for NO3− leaching, the soil parent material was not selected but soil net nitrification was selected, indicating that soil net nitrification could explain the variability of NO3− leaching. A significant increase in NO3– leaching after the 3-year N fertilization experiment was observed at the site with the highest levels of NO3– leaching (Shibecha), indicating that the susceptibility of NO3– leaching is high in locations where N leaching was originally high.

Aims: Nitrate (NO3−) leaching from forest ecosystems can differ depending on the plant species because of differences in nitrogen (N) retention capacities. Moso bamboo, a fast-growth species, expands into adjacent forests worldwide, potentially leading to increased N retention and subsequently reduced NO3− leaching. Accordingly, this study aims to compare NO3− leaching and potential factors between Moso bamboo and neighboring forest. Methods: We measured NO3− concentrations in soil solutions at a Moso bamboo site (BF) and an adjacent Japanese cedar plantation (CF). We also evaluated soil nitrification and plant N uptake by the in situ depletion method. Results: The NO3− concentration in the soil solution below the root zone (50 cm) was lower in BF (48 ± 8 µmol L−1) than in CF (305 ± 16 µmol L−1). The NO3− concentration in the soil solution was significantly higher for surface soil (0–5 cm) (111 ± 11 µmol L−1) than for soil below the root zone in BF, but not significantly different between these two layers in CF (357 ± 25 µmol L−1), indicating high N retention in BF. The net nitrification rates and root NO3− uptake rates were higher in BF than in CF, indicating that plant N uptake could be the main contributors to the low NO3− leaching. Conclusions: Bamboo invasion has the potential to mitigate forest NO3− leaching due to its high N uptake. Our findings highlight the importance of vegetation with higher N uptake in enhancing N retention under elevated atmospheric N deposition.

Owing to the elevated loading of nitrogen through atmospheric deposition, some forested ecosystems become nitrogen saturated, from which elevated levels of nitrate are exported. The average concentration of stream nitrate eluted from upstream and downstream of the Kasuya Research forested catchments (FK1 and FK2 catchments) in Japan were more than 90 μM, implying that these forested catchments were under nitrogen saturation. To verify that these forested catchments were under the nitrogen saturation, we determined the export flux of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate relative to the entire deposition flux (Matm/Datm ratio) in these catchments; because the Matm/Datm ratio has recently been proposed as a reliable index to evaluate nitrogen saturation in forested catchments. Specifically, we determined the temporal variation in the concentrations and stable isotopic compositions, including δ17O, of stream nitrate in the FK catchments for more than 2 years. In addition, for comparison, the same parameters were also monitored in the Shiiba Research forested catchment (MY catchment) in Japan during the same period, where the average stream nitrate concentration was low, less than 10 μM. While showing the average nitrate concentrations of 109.5, 90.9, and 7.3 μM in FK1, FK2, and MY, respectively, the catchments showed average δ17O values of +2.6 ‰, +1.5 ‰, and +0.6 ‰ in FK1, FK2, and MY, respectively. Thus, the average concentration of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate ([NO3-atm]) was estimated to be 10.8, 5.1, and 0.2 μM in FK1, FK2, and MY, respectively, and the Matm/Datm ratio was estimated to be 14.1 %, 6.6 %, and 1.3 % in FK1, FK2, and MY, respectively. The estimated Matm/Datm ratio in FK1 (14.1 %) was the highest ever reported from temperate forested catchments monitored for more than 1 year. Thus, we concluded that nitrogen saturation was responsible for the enrichment of stream nitrate in the FK catchments, together with the elevated NO3-atm leaching from the catchments. While the stream nitrate concentration ([NO3-]) can be affected by the amount of precipitation, the Matm/Datm ratio is independent of the amount of precipitation; thus, the Matm/Datm ratio can be used as a robust index for evaluating nitrogen saturation in forested catchments.

Plants respond to environmental stressors, such as an oligotrophic environments, by altering the morphological and physiological functions of their leaves. Sex affects these functions because of the asymmetric cost of reproduction in dioecious plants. We compared the leaf mass per leaf area (LMA), ratio of intercellular air space in leaf mesophyll tissue (mesophyll porosity), palisade thickness, and carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) of leaves of the dioecious shrub Myrica gale based on sex and gradients of soil water chemistry across habitats in the field. The PCA showed that the first three principal components accounted for 84.5% of the variation. PC1 to PC3 were associated with the origin of soil water, nitrogen status of habitats, and sea-salt contributions, respectively. LMA varied from 5.22 to 7.13 μg/cm2, and it was positively related to PC2 and negatively related to PC3, but not to PC1 or sex, suggesting that LMA was low under poor nitrogen conditions and varied with salinity. Mesophyll porosity values were over 50% for all habitats. Mesophyll porosity was positively affected by PC3 and smaller in females than in males. This suggests that M. gale exhibits differences in mesophyll anatomy according to sex. Palisade thickness ranged from 0.466 to 0.559 mm/ mm. The leaves of females had thinner palisade layers per mesophyll layer than those of males; however, the habitat did not affect the thickness of the palisade layer per mesophyll layer. The δ13C values of leaves varied from -32.14 to -30.51 . We found that δ13C values were positively related to PC2 but not to PC1, PC3, and sex. Under poor nitrogen conditions, the δ13C of M. gale leaves decreased, suggesting that nutrient deficiency would decrease more under the long-term averaged ratio of photosynthesis than stomatal conductance, leading to low water use efficiency.

Allochthonous organic matter that supports aquatic organisms is retained in the benthic and hyporheic zones in headwater mountain streams. In this study, we examined relative importance of the hyporheic zone as the zone of decomposition over 5 seasons (winter, spring, rainy season, summer and fall) and contribution of macroinvertebrate to organic matter decomposition. Cotton-strip assay and tensile strength loss were used to measure organic matter decomposition rates, and relative contribution of macroinvertebrate was estimated using the differences in tensile strength loss of cotton strips in 0.1 mm and 5 mm mesh-opening bags. Both benthic and hyporheic zone showed seasonality, where lowest decomposition rate observed in winter and highest in summer. The relationship between organic matter decomposition rate and water temperature suggested that water temperature was a primary factor resulting in seasonal variation. The decomposition rates in the hyporheic zone were similar to the benthic zone in fall and winter, but from spring to summer, the rates were significantly lower. Thus, as the zone of decomposition, the relative importance of the hyporheic zone differ depending on seasons. Contribution of macroinvertebrate to decomposition was significant in all seasons but winter in benthic zone and was significant only in summer and fall in the hyporheic zone. Thus, macroinvertebrate plays important role even in the hyporheic zone in some seasons.

Although Chamaecyparis obtusa reduces soil pH and cation levels, limited information is available regarding their alterations after clear-cutting. We examined the soil pH and base cations on the upslopes and downslopes of individual trees and stumps of C. obtusa at two distances (0.5 m and 1.0 m) and three depths (0–5, 5–10, and 10–30 cm) in intact- and cut-tree plots. The soil pH was higher in the cut-tree plot than in the intact-tree plot, indicating the recovery of soil pH after clear-cutting. The recovery was more evident in the surface soils (0–5 cm) of downslope areas (0.5 m) than in other soil depths, which implies that the recovery of soil pH was caused by the lack of H+ supply from stumps after clear-cutting. The results of H+ (in H2O: water-soluble and KCl: exchangeable) suggested a lack of soluble H+ in the cut-tree plot. Soil Ca2+ and Mg2+ levels in the surface soil (0–5 cm) were 1.86-fold and 1.93-fold higher in the cut-tree plot than in the intact-tree plot, respectively, implying that the recovery of divalent cations after clear-cutting was caused by a reduction in cation loss through cation exchange with H+ derived from the stemflow. Collectively, soil pH and divalent cations were recovered after clear-cutting because the stemflow had ceased.

Increased atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition, caused by anthropogenic activities, has various effects on forest ecosystems. Some reports have investigated the responses in tree transpiration to N addition, but few studies have measured the short-term response of mature tree transpiration to N fertilization. This study aimed to clarify the short-term transpiration response in 27-year-old deciduous hardwood trees to an increase in N availability. We established two plot types (control and N-fertilized plots) in Quercus crispula plantation stands in Hokkaido, Northern Japan. We measured sap flow density (SFD; cm3 m−2 s−1) using a thermal dissipation method for three months during the growing season. In the N-fertilized plot, we added 50 kg N ha−1 yr−1 of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) to the forest floor in the middle of the measurement periods. For daily mean SFD, we did not find a significant difference between the control and the N-fertilized plots. Leaf N contents did not differ between treatments, implying a negligible difference in physiological responses and transpiration rates. The slight difference between treatments could be because the trees had already foliated before applying the N fertilizer to our deciduous hardwood trees. The present results indicate that the potential increase in N deposition during the growing season does not immediately alter tree transpiration.

The responses of forest production and nitrogen (N) utilization to belowground resource availability may be stronger in Moso bamboo forests than in woody forests because the former have higher N and water demands than the latter. The aim of this study was to clarify the different effects of mountain slope-induced belowground resource limitation on forest production between a Moso bamboo forest and a Japanese cedar forest. We compared the changes in biomass, net primary production, net primary production allocation, N utilization, N content per organ, and N use efficiency in response to soil resource availability at five different slope positions in each forest type. In the bamboo forest, the aboveground net primary production decreased upslope and the belowground net primary production allocation increased with decreasing upslope soil water availability. In contrast, leaf N content of the bamboo forest increased upslope, and N use efficiency decreased upslope with an increasing upslope soil N mineralization rate. Although a greater N use efficiency has often been reported at higher slope positions due to lower N availability, this phenomenon was observed at lower slope position in the bamboo forest. The soil N supply might exceed the soil N demand at higher slope positions, resulting in lower N use efficiency. The responses observed in the bamboo forest were absent in the Japanese cedar forest. The higher demand for belowground resources and environmental plasticity explained the higher productivity of the bamboo forest.

In recent years, the population of Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon) has been increasing rapidly. This study focused on the fact that herbivore, including deer, are prone to sodium deficiency, and hypothesized that water in livestock manure (hereafter referred to as "manure water") and snow on roads sprayed with road salt (hereafter referred to as "road water") may contain high concentrations of sodium and serve as a source of sodium for deer. The sodium concentration in the manure water was 5 mM, about 100 times higher than that in nearby forest soil water. In addition, the sodium concentration in the road water was about 100 mM, which is on the same order of magnitude as the reported sodium concentrations in the water at natural mineral-licks. These results indicate that manure water and road water have high enough concentrations to be a source of sodium for deer.
