To achieve a sustainable society that is environmentally friendly, the long-term and cyclical use of wood is crucial. This entails the stable production of wood materials from trees as a resource and the maintenance of secure and safe wooden housing for extended periods. In our research laboratory, a wide range of studies, from fundamental to applied, is conducted using physical and engineering methods to non-destructively evaluate various properties of wood and wood-based materials. We also explore the potential utilization of fast growing trees both domestically and internationally.

    There is a strong interest in developing and using acoustic technology to evaluate the mechanical properties of wood in situations where a static bending test is not feasible to undertake. In this study, the mechanical properties of Acacia mangium (black wattle) wood were predicted by using stress wave and ultrasonic wave methods. The values of dynamic modulus of elasticity based on stress wave and ultrasonic wave were 9,29 % and 4,75 % higher than those obtained from static modulus of elasticity, respectively. There was no statistically significant correlation between acoustic velocity and mechanical properties measured by destructive tests. The strong experimental correlation coefficients were found between stress wave and modulus of elasticity (r = 0,94; P &lt; 0,001), and ultrasonic wave and modulus of elasticity (r = 0,83; P &lt; 0,001). This result indicates that stress wave and ultrasonic wave techniques are suitable for predicting the static modulus of elasticity of Acacia mangium (black wattle) wood if the density of the measured elements is known. There was no dependence of wood density and acoustic propagation velocity measured in this study, whereas statistically significant correlations were found between the fiber length with stress wave velocity (r = 0,44; P &lt; 0,05) and ultrasonic velocity (r = 0,48; P &lt; 0,05).

    This study focuses on the effects of chemical treatment using polyethylene glycol (PEG) and physical treatment via steam explosion and microwave, with a comprehensive analysis using ATR-FTIR, X-ray diffraction, Keyence VR 6000 optical profilometer, and SEM. The aim is to elucidate alterations in bamboo cell walls following these treatments compared to untreated bamboo. The results reveal significant modifications in the chemical composition and crystalline structure of bamboo cell walls post-treatment. ATR-FTIR analysis indicates changes in functional groups, suggesting chemical interactions and modifications in the molecular arrangement of cell wall components. XRD analysis further corroborates these findings by revealing shifts in crystallinity and peak intensities, signifying structural rearrangements, as evidenced by optical images and SEM micrographs.

    The fire performance of fire retardant-treated wood can be evaluated based on how much of the chemical retardant is used. Therefore, methods for identifying chemical content in wood are needed. Stereo images of wood samples before and after the fire retardant treatment were captured using micro-focus X-ray computed tomography. Image brightness values, indicating concentration, were calculated using binarized images sliced from the X-ray images. Changes in integrated brightness values before and after treatment showed a strong positive correlation with chemical content at a 1% significance level. The chemical content of the retardant-treated wood was predicted based on the relationship between the two. The predicted values were in agreement with the values measured using the leaching method. Fire performance tests of the fire retardant-treated wood were conducted using a cone calorimeter. The treated wood was classified as fire-retardant and non-combustible wood. In addition, the fire performance predicted by the relationship between changes in integrated brightness values and chemical content agreed with the classification by the fire performance test. These findings suggest that X-ray computed tomography can be potentially used to predict the chemical content of fire retardant-treated wood.

    本研究の概要は、所定の防火性能を満たす安心・安全な防火木材を開発・製造して、木造建築物の火災の被害を最小限に抑えて人々を守るために、防火木材の防火性能の新しい非接触・非破壊評価法を確立することである。そのために非接触・非破壊ツールとして知られている空中超音波を利用して難燃処理木材の防火性能を推定し、発熱性試験の結果と比較することで、空中超音波の有用性の実証を行う研究である。
