Profile
I am mainly studying topological data analysis and microlocal sheaf theory. For topological data analysis, I am trying to develop effective methods for combining persistent homology and machine learning, such as filtration learning and optimization of persistence-based loss functions. For microlocal sheaf theory, I am interested in applying sheaf theory to symplectic geometry. I use an interleaving distance between sheaves to study the energy of Hamiltonian systems, and use the completeness of the distances to study C0 symplectic geometry.

    Despite their successful application to a variety of tasks, neural networks
    remain limited, like other machine learning methods, by their sensitivity to
    shifts in the data: their performance can be severely impacted by differences
    in distribution between the data on which they were trained and that on which
    they are deployed. In this article, we propose a new family of representations,
    called MAGDiff, that we extract from any given neural network classifier and
    that allows for efficient covariate data shift detection without the need to
    train a new model dedicated to this task. These representations are computed by
    comparing the activation graphs of the neural network for samples belonging to
    the training distribution and to the target distribution, and yield powerful
    data- and task-adapted statistics for the two-sample tests commonly used for
    data set shift detection. We demonstrate this empirically by measuring the
    statistical powers of two-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) tests on several
    different data sets and shift types, and showing that our novel representations
    induce significant improvements over a state-of-the-art baseline relying on the
    network output.

    This paper proposes a new algorithm for learning accurate tree-based models while ensuring the existence of recourse actions. Algorithmic Recourse (AR) aims to provide a recourse action for altering the undesired prediction result given by a model. Typical AR methods provide a reasonable action by solving an optimization task of minimizing the required effort among executable actions. In practice, however, such actions do not always exist for models optimized only for predictive performance. To alleviate this issue, we formulate the task of learning an accurate classification tree under the constraint of ensuring the existence of reasonable actions for as many instances as possible. Then, we propose an efficient top-down greedy algorithm by leveraging the adversarial training techniques. We also show that our proposed algorithm can be applied to the random forest, which is known as a popular framework for learning tree ensembles. Experimental results demonstrated that our method successfully provided reasonable actions to more instances than the baselines without significantly degrading accuracy and computational efficiency.

    Abstract

    Graph embedding methods are effective techniques for representing nodes and their relations in a continuous space. Specifically, the hyperbolic space is more effective than the Euclidean space for embedding graphs with tree-like structures. Thus, it is critical how to select the best dimensionality for the hyperbolic space in which a graph is embedded. This is because we cannot distinguish nodes well with dimensionality that is considerably low, whereas the embedded relations are affected by irregularities in data with excessively high dimensionality. We consider this problem from the viewpoint of statistical model selection for latent variable models. Thereafter, we propose a novel methodology for dimensionality selection based on the minimum description length principle. We aim to introduce a latent variable modeling of hyperbolic embeddings and apply the decomposed normalized maximum likelihood code-length to latent variable model selection. We empirically demonstrated the effectiveness of our method using both synthetic and real-world datasets.

    We prove that for any element L in the completion of the space of smooth compact exact Lagrangian submanifolds of a cotangent bundle equipped with the spectral distance, the γ-support of L coincides with the reduced micro-support of its sheaf quantization. As an application, we give a characterization of the Vichery subdifferential in terms of γ-support.

    The use of topological descriptors in modern machine learning applications,
    such as Persistence Diagrams (PDs) arising from Topological Data Analysis
    (TDA), has shown great potential in various domains. However, their practical
    use in applications is often hindered by two major limitations: the
    computational complexity required to compute such descriptors exactly, and
    their sensitivity to even low-level proportions of outliers. In this work, we
    propose to bypass these two burdens in a data-driven setting by entrusting the
    estimation of (vectorization of) PDs built on top of point clouds to a neural
    network architecture that we call RipsNet. Once trained on a given data set,
    RipsNet can estimate topological descriptors on test data very efficiently with
    generalization capacity. Furthermore, we prove that RipsNet is robust to input
    perturbations in terms of the 1-Wasserstein distance, a major improvement over
    the standard computation of PDs that only enjoys Hausdorff stability, yielding
    RipsNet to substantially outperform exactly-computed PDs in noisy settings. We
    showcase the use of RipsNet on both synthetic and real-world data. Our
    open-source implementation is publicly available at
    https://github.com/hensel-f/ripsnet and will be included in the Gudhi library.

    Counterfactual Explanation (CE) is a post-hoc explanation method that provides a perturbation for altering the prediction result of a classifier. An individual can interpret the perturbation as an “action” to obtain the desired decision results. Existing CE methods focus on providing an action, which is optimized for a given single instance. However, these CE methods do not address the case where we have to assign actions to multiple instances simultaneously. In such a case, we need a framework of CE that assigns actions to multiple instances in a transparent and consistent way. In this study, we propose Counterfactual Explanation Tree (CET) that assigns effective actions with decision trees. Due to the properties of decision trees, our CET has two advantages: (1) Transparency: the reasons for assigning actions are summarized in an interpretable structure, and (2) Consistency: these reasons do not conflict with each other. We learn a CET in two steps: (i) compute one effective action for multiple instances and (ii) partition the instances to balance the effectiveness and interpretability. Numerical experiments and user studies demonstrated the efficacy of our CET in comparison with existing methods.
