Profile
Research and Practice in Educational Technology For over 20 years, I have been engaged in research and practice in the field of Educational Technology, as well as in the education of students. My primary objective is to explore the nature of intelligent information environments that facilitate the transmission, awareness, and creation of knowledge. To this end, I have conducted research on educational and learning support using ICT. In my research, I place strong emphasis not only on the design, development, and evaluation of systems, but also on their implementation in real educational settings. By scientifically analyzing and addressing educational and learning challenges, I aim to make tangible contributions to actual classroom environments. With the advancement of foundational information technologies—such as mobile learning, social learning, text mining, educational big data, and artificial intelligence—I have continued to promote research that addresses the ever-emerging challenges in the field. Major Research Themes Generation of Personalized Learning Materials I have developed a system that dynamically generates and recommends optimal learning materials tailored to individual learners by leveraging generative AI based on learner characteristics and learning histories. Development of a Personalized Learning Material Recommendation System By analyzing learners’ behavioral patterns and VARK learning styles, I have developed a system that provides timely and individualized material recommendations. Pattern Mining for Instructional Material Improvement I applied pattern mining techniques to viewing logs of self-developed teaching materials, identifying areas for improvement and validating methods for enhancement. Cluster Analysis Using Educational Big Data By clustering learning behaviors based on eBook learning logs, I analyzed characteristics of various learning styles. The analysis revealed that students who frequently revisit materials tend to learn more efficiently. Learning Support through Research Trend Analysis I developed a search engine for analyzing research trends using text mining techniques. An evaluation conducted with university students in Taiwan confirmed that it yielded better learning outcomes than general-purpose search engines. Support for Social Learning I created a language learning support system that utilizes social networking services (SNS). The system proposes suitable learning partners and appropriate request routes to facilitate collaborative learning among students. Development of Mobile and Ubiquitous Learning Environments To support the acquisition of Japanese honorific expressions, I developed a ubiquitous learning support system that presents appropriate expressions based on the surrounding learners' context. This system assisted international students in their language learning process.

The low selt-efficacy has been an important issue in the design ot instructional methods, and its negative ettects are mainly shown by the reduced willingness to leam and the high dropout and failure rates. Game-based learning has received attention In the design of t instructional methods because of the combination of learning content and games. In this study, we use addressing modes learning in operation system course as a case object to explore the potential of improving the low self-efficacy by game-based learning. To this end, a side-scrolling video game was designed to complete the case study task to examine the effect of game-based learning on solving the low self-efficacy issue. According to the experimental results, there was no difference in learning achievement between the experimental group students who used game-based learning, and the control group students who used traditional learning methods. However, with similar scores in teaming achievement, the experimental group students showed higher self-efficacy than the control group students. In addition, it was shown that the game-based learning approach did not Impose additional cognitive load.

The purpose of this study is to explore students’ backtracking patterns in using a digital textbook, reveal the relationship between backtracking behaviors and academic performance as well as learning styles. This study was carried out for 2 semesters on 102 university students and they are required to use a digital textbook system called DITeL to review courseware. Students’ backtracking behaviors are characterized by seven backtracking features extracted from interaction log data and their learning styles are measured by Felder–Silverman learning style model. The results of this study reveal that there is a subgroup of students called backtracker who backtrack more frequently and performed better than the average students. Furthermore, the causal inference analysis reveals that a higher initial ability can directly cause a higher frequency of backtracking, thus affecting the final test score. In addition, the significance analysis reveals no significant correlation between backtracking behavior and learning style. Building upon these experimental findings, we offer several suggestions for the future advancement of digital teaching materials development.

The e-book systems have been widely used in educational activities, such as college studies. At the same time, a huge amount of data regarding the learning history are collected by using the E-book system. Data mining and machine learning method have been used for analyzing these educational data in order to study the learning behaviors of students. Most rereading behaviors to study relevant contents on other pages again are inefficient due to that students are difficult to accurately navigate to the desired page with just a one-time page transition on the e-book system. In this study, we develop a hybrid recommendation model, which can recommend students to find the desired pages when rereading. The developed model is combining a content-based method (TF-IDF model) and a data-driven method (Page jumping model) linearly. By optimizing its parameters with the collected learning data, the developed model can generate ranking lists of relevant pages for students. Finally, the performance of the developed model is evaluated by two metrics: precision and recall.

     More details

The purpose of this study is to explore students' backtracking patterns in
using a digital textbook and reveal the relationship between backtracking
behaviors and academic performance as well as learning styles. The study was
carried out for two semesters on 102 university students and they are required
to use a digital textbook system called DITeL to review courseware. Students'
backtracking behaviors are characterized by seven backtracking features
extracted from interaction log data and their learning styles are measured by
Felder-Silverman learning style model. The results of the study reveal that
there is a subgroup of students called backtrackers who backtrack more
frequently and performed better than the average students. Furthermore, the
causal inference analysis reveals that a higher initial ability can directly
cause a higher frequency of backtracking, thus affecting the final test score.
In addition, most backtrackers are reflective and visual learners, and the
seven backtracking features are good predictors in automatically identifying
learning styles. Based on the results of qualitative data analysis,
recommendations were made on how to provide prompt backtracking assistants and
automatically detect learning styles in digital textbooks.
