The purpose of this study is to explore students’ backtracking patterns in using a digital textbook, reveal the relationship between backtracking behaviors and academic performance as well as learning styles. This study was carried out for 2 semesters on 102 university students and they are required to use a digital textbook system called DITeL to review courseware. Students’ backtracking behaviors are characterized by seven backtracking features extracted from interaction log data and their learning styles are measured by Felder–Silverman learning style model. The results of this study reveal that there is a subgroup of students called backtracker who backtrack more frequently and performed better than the average students. Furthermore, the causal inference analysis reveals that a higher initial ability can directly cause a higher frequency of backtracking, thus affecting the final test score. In addition, the significance analysis reveals no significant correlation between backtracking behavior and learning style. Building upon these experimental findings, we offer several suggestions for the future advancement of digital teaching materials development.

We design a generative adversarial network (GAN)-based pencil drawing learning system for art education on large image datasets to help students study how to draw pencil drawings for images and scenes. The system generates a pencil drawing result for a natural image based on GAN. The GAN network is trained on pencil drawing big datasets containing image pairs of natural images and their corresponding pencil drawings. Using the pencil drawing learning system, students can paint pencil drawings whenever they want and for whatever they like by uploading an image of the content they want to draw and getting a pencil drawing example of the uploaded image from the system. With the returned pencil drawing, students will see the pencil drawing effect of natural scenes clearly and realize how to draw the pencil drawing for the natural scene. Besides, with students using the pencil drawing learning system, it will be convenient for teachers assigning homework to students. Teachers can know the learning demands of students by evaluating the hand-in homework and update the content correspondingly. We have conducted two user studies for evaluating the practicality of the system, and the result of the two user studies demonstrated the applicability and practicality of the system.

Big data in education promotes access to the analysis of learning behavior, yielding many valuable analysis results. However, with obscure and insufficient guidelines commonly followed when applying the analysis results, it is difficult to translate information knowledge into actionable strategies for educational practices. This study aimed to solve this problem by utilizing the learning analytics (LA) framework. We proposed a learning analytics framework based on human-centered Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emphasized its analysis result application step, highlighting the function of this step to transform the analysis results into the most suitable application strategy. To this end, we first integrated evidence-driven education for precise AI analytics and application, which is one of the core ideas of human-centered AI (HAI), into the framework design for its analysis result application step. In addition, a cognitive load test was included in the design. Second, to verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework and application strategy, two independent experiments were carried out, while machine learning and statistical data analysis tools were used to analyze the emerging data. Finally, the results of the first experiment revealed a learning strategy that best matched the analysis results through the application step in the framework. Further, we conclude that students who applied the learning strategy achieved better learning results in the second experiment. Specifically, the second experimental results also show that there was no burden on cognitive load for the students who applied the learning strategy, in comparison with those who did not.

This review study investigates the appropriation of sensing technology in context-aware ubiquitous learning (CAUL) in the fields of sciences, engineering, and humanities. 40 empirical studies with concrete learning outcomes across mandatory and higher education have been systematically reviewed and thematically analyzed with an outcomes-based teaching and learning approach. Four derived themes have been found to describe the design and implementation of CAUL, including learner-centeredness, technological facilitation, learning ecology, and research evaluation. The learning processes enabled by context-aware sensing technology have been explicated, revealing specific ways to apply new technologies in formal and informal environments. The analysis based on intended learning outcomes suggest that more efforts should be directed to fostering competence in analyzing and creating in mandatory education, and to creating in tertiary settings. Finally, unequal distribution of CAUL implementation across world regions calls for more technological appropriation in Southeast Asia and Africa. Specific suggestions on how to improve CAUL are also provided to better prepare learners in the twenty-first century.

Educational data mining for discovering hidden browsing patterns using non-negative matrix factorization
This paper describes a method to collect data of which section of pages learners were browsing in digital textbooks without eye-tracking technologies. In previous researches on digital textbook systems, it was difficult to collect such data without using eye-tackers. However, eye-trackers cost a massive budget. Our proposed system automatically hides the texts in the digital textbooks with mask processing before the learners browse the texts in the digital textbooks. If they click the hidden texts, the system gets rid of the masks and the texts appear letter by letter. We used NMF to discover learners’ browsing patterns from the collected logs. Evaluation experiments were conducted to examine the effectiveness of our system in terms of fascination, understandableness and enhancement of thinking and to discover learners’ browsing patterns. It was found that our method could enhance thinking skills. A browsing pattern of diligent learners with high learning achievements was also found.

An automatic quiz generation system utilizing digital textbook logs
This paper describes an automatic quiz generation system designed to support language learning that utilizes digital textbook logs. Learners often memorize words in digital textbooks while preparing for an examination, and they often use the highlight function for the words. Previous studies regarding annotations and highlights have shown that learning only by using the highlight function on important content in textbooks did not affect learning achievements. Therefore, in this study, we developed a system that can support the repeated learning by analyzing digital textbook logs and providing appropriate quizzes. An evaluation experiment involving 31 international students was conducted to assess whether the quizzes provided by our proposed system are able to enhance the learning achievements as compared to teacher-created quizzes. The results show that the quizzes by our proposed system and the teacher-created quizzes were both equally effective. A correlation analysis was conducted to identify the correlation among the learning achievements, the number of quizzes, and each variable in questionnaires. We found that there is a positive correlation between the number of quizzes and the students’ learning achievements.

A Result Confirmation-based Learning Behavior Analysis Framework for Exploring the Hidden Reasons behind Patterns and Strategies
Educational data mining and learning analytics have become a very important topic in the field of education technology. Many frameworks have been proposed for learning analytics which make it possible to identify learning behavior patterns or strategies. However, it is difficult to understand the reason why behavior patterns occur and why certain strategies are used. In other words, all of the existing frameworks lack an important step, that is, result confirmation. In this paper, we propose a Result Confirmation-based Learning Behavior Analysis (ReCoLBA) framework, which adds a result confirmation step for exploring the hidden reasons underlying the learning patterns and strategies. Using this ReCoLBA framework, a case study was conducted which analyzed e-book reading data. In the case study, we found that the students had a tendency to delete markers after adding them. Through an investigation, we found that the students did this because they could not grasp the learning emphasis. To apply this finding, we proposed a learning strategy whereby the teacher highlights the learning emphasis before students read the learning materials. An experiment was conducted to examine the effectiveness of this strategy, and we found that it could indeed help students achieve better results, reduce repetitive behaviors and save time. The framework was therefore shown to be effective.

Exploring the Relationships between Reading Behavior Patterns and Learning Outcomes Based on Log Data from E-Books: A Human Factor Approach
Online learning environments presently accumulate large amounts of log data. Analysis of learning behaviors from these log data is expected to benefit instructors and learners. This study was intended to identify effective measures from e-book materials used at Kyushu University and to employ these measures for analyzing learning behavioral patterns. In an evaluation, students were grouped into four clusters using k-means clustering, and their learning behavioral patterns were analyzed. We examined whether the learning behavioral patterns exhibited relations with the learning outcomes. The results reveal that the learning behavior of “backtrack” style reading exerts a significant positive influence on learning effectiveness, which can aid students to learn more efficiently.

Analyzing learning patterns based on log data from digital textbooks
The analysis of learning behaviors from the log data of digital textbooks is beneficial for improving education systems. The focus of discussion in any analysis of learning behaviors is often on discovering the relationships between learning behavior and learning performance. However, little attention has been paid to investigating and analyzing learning patterns or rules among learning style of index (LSI), cognitive style of index (CSI), and the logs of digital textbooks. In this study, the authors proposed a method to analyze learning patterns or rules of reading digital textbooks. The analysis method used association analysis with the Apriori algorithm. The analysis was conducted using logs of digital textbooks and questionnaires to investigate students' learning and cognitive styles. From the detected meaningful association rules, this study found three student types: poorly motivated, efficient, and diligent. The authors believe that consideration of these student types can contribute to the improvement of learning and teaching.

Roles and strategies of learning analytics in the e-publication era
E-books have been introduced to educational institutions in many countries. The use of e-books in traditional classrooms enables the recording of learning logs. Recently, researchers have begun to carry out learning analytics on the learning logs of e-books. However, there has been limited attention devoted to understanding the types of learning strategies that students employ when they read e-books. In this paper, using e-book learning logs, we examine the learning strategies that students employed when reading e-books. In this paper, we will introduce how to identify learning strategies from e-book learning logs with two case studies. One is "Identifying Learning Strategies Using Clustering" and the other is "Examining Learning Strategies Using Sequential Analysis.".

An SNS-based model for finding collaborative partners
This paper proposes a model, Recommendation of Appropriate Partners (RAP), used on a Social Networking Service (SNS) for locating appropriate “helpers” for users based on individual users’ Chain of Friends (CoF) relationships. Using the RAP model, individual users can participate in a collaborative online community in remote locations, whereby helpers are willing to help other users solve their tasks/problems, and it is intended that both the users and helpers gain knowledge from these interactive online sessions. An example of the RAP-based system was implemented to invite Program Committee members to an international conference. The system was evaluated and the experimental results show that our model is very effective for discovering collaboration partners and finding users with similar interests in order to create communities for providing future and longer-term helping exchange.

With the popularity of the Internet, online searching is becoming an important part of learning. In this paper, based on the “Learning by Searching” theory, a learning environment is developed, which includes a search engine to assist students in recognizing the progression of trends and keyword transitions for specific domains. To efficiently support research trend surveys, an automatic data accumulation and classification approach is proposed to construct the database excerpts instead of manual keyword registration or any other heuristic preprocesses. With an associative search module, the search engine dynamically searches for relevant words that are frequently used in the targeted academic field, and provides learners with effective visualizations to understand the trend transitions. An experiment has been conducted on a college information management course to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The experiment results show that the students who learned with the new approach had significantly better learning performance in terms of recognizing the trend transitions of the targeted issues than those who learned with conventional search engines.

This paper proposes a conceptual framework – SPSML (Scaffolding Participatory Simulation for Mobile Learning), used on mobile devices for helping students learn conceptual knowledge in the classroom. The framework adopts an experiential learning model as the pedagogical design which consists of five sequential but cyclic steps: the initial stage, concrete experience, observe and reflect, abstract conceptualization and testing in new situations. Goal-based and scaffolding approaches to participatory simulations are integrated into the design to enhance students’ experiential learning. Using the SPSML framework, the students can experience : 1) learning in augmented reality by playing different participatory roles in mobile simulations in the micro-world on the mobile device, and 2) interacting with people in the real world to enhance understandings of conceptual knowledge. An instance of the SPSML-based system was implemented and evaluated. The experimental results show that the system was conducive to the students’ experiential learning and motivation; moreover, the students who learned with the proposed approach gained significantly higher accuracy rates in performing the more complicated sorting algorithm.

In order to help researchers in building a knowledge foundation of their research fields which could be a time-consuming process, we have developed a Cross Tabulation Search Engine (CTSE). Its purpose is to assist researchers in 1) conducting research surveys, 2) efficiently and effectively retrieving information (such as important researchers, research groups, keywords), and also 3) providing analytical information relating to past and current research trends in a particular field. Our CTSE system employs data-processing technologies and emphasizes the use of a "Learn by Searching" learning strategy to support students to analyze such research trends. To show the effectiveness of CTSE, a pilot experiment has been conducted, where participants were assigned to do research survey tasks and then answer a questionnaire regarding the effectiveness and usability of the system. The results showed that the system has been helpful to students in conducting research surveys, and the research trend transitions that our system presented were effective for producing research trend surveys. Moreover, the results showed that most students had favorable attitudes toward the usage and usability of the system, and those students were satisfied in gaining more know ledge in a particular research field in a short period of time.

Online learning has become a part of daily life. However, it has fostered a tendency to shallow reading. Notably, little attention has been paid to precisely identifying shallow reading behaviors using quantified education big data in favor of methods such as conceptual descriptions, opinions, and questionnaires, resulting in an imprecise analysis of its impact on learning and a lack of strategies to mitigate its causative factors. This study addresses the issue by introducing a behavior-identifying model grounded in measurable data to precisely identify shallow reading behaviors. Initially, three key dimensions of shallow reading behaviors were proposed, along with corresponding mathematical indicators. Subsequently, the k-means algorithm and Pearson correlation coefficient were employed to evaluate the relationship between shallow reading and learning performance, underscoring its significance. The analysis showed that shallow reading behaviors are highly associated with poor learning performance, thus hindering critical reading. These findings further validate the predominant influence of reading speed on learning performance. Consequently, a strategy was developed to intentionally decrease reading speed. Following that, an experiment was conducted to assess the effectiveness of this strategy in mitigating shallow reading. The results revealed improved learning performance and a significant reduction in shallow reading behaviors without increasing cognitive load.

This study reports the results on the relationship between cognitive style and learning style to understand the reading behavior of undergraduate students using an e-book system from the standpoint of a learning analytics view. Data are recorded from 102 undergraduate students at a university in China for over 4 months. The obtained results indicate that students with an analytical cognitive style achieve the highest performance compared with the other cognitive style groups (quasi-intuitive, adaptive, and quasi-analytic) and better fit the global learning style. Further, their reading behavior is different from that of the other three cognitive style groups (quasi-intuitive, adaptive, and quasi-analytic) as they re-read the first half to better understand the complete picture, following which, they continue their reading smoothly. Personalized learning is being adopted by rapidly growing educational institutions worldwide. The results provide tangible evidence for teachers to better consider the characteristics of students to design classrooms and students to better design learning plans according to their characteristics.

Information avoidance has been studied in medicine, economics, and psychology, and has recently been discussed in educational technology. In this study, the authors developed a grouping method to reduce students’ information avoidance in reading through group work. This two-step group method includes the k-means and genetic algorithm to explore the grouping method based on students’ marking tendencies. To examine the effect of this method, an experiment was conducted in a web-system development course with 33 graduate students. The results showed that information avoidance occurred less in the experimental group than in the control group. The students of the two-step grouping method evaluated group work as more helpful for their study than the students who attended the usual group work.

The e-book systems have been widely used in educational activities, such as college studies. At the same time, a huge amount of data regarding the learning history are collected by using the E-book system. Data mining and machine learning method have been used for analyzing these educational data in order to study the learning behaviors of students. Most rereading behaviors to study relevant contents on other pages again are inefficient due to that students are difficult to accurately navigate to the desired page with just a one-time page transition on the e-book system. In this study, we develop a hybrid recommendation model, which can recommend students to find the desired pages when rereading. The developed model is combining a content-based method (TF-IDF model) and a data-driven method (Page jumping model) linearly. By optimizing its parameters with the collected learning data, the developed model can generate ranking lists of relevant pages for students. Finally, the performance of the developed model is evaluated by two metrics: precision and recall.

How to accurately define and identify learning behaviors is a prerequisite for analyzing behaviors, mining relationships, and developing strategies. To this end, social psychological methods such as questionnaires, individual interviews, and behavioral observations have been attempted to provide an accurate understanding of accurate behavior identification. However, inconsistencies in the measurement criteria for behavioral identification have led to identification errors. A new perspective on behavior identification is provided along with the rapid development of education dig data. Based on the data collection method by learning systems, with the help of recorded objective behavioral data, this study designs a behavior identifying model for online reading behavior and analyzed its behavioral characteristics. In this way, it will provide an evidence base for learning processes, interactions, and policy development.

In recent decades, more and more research about game-based learning has proved it powerful in improving stu-dents' concentration and motivation and causing a considerable effect on diverse learning content. Focusing on virtual memory in the Operating Systems, we try to employ game-based learning in transforming complex and abstract learning content into easy-to-understand game missions. In the game, students can manipulate a character, explore 3 maps of a 3D world equivalent to locations of data, and conduct missions presenting the process of addressing and are provided with guidance for scaffolding. In this study, we elaborate on the design in detail and demonstrate the effect of a gamification prototype.

A system based on the concept of utilizing such relationships between knowledge was developed. This system aims to identify the lack of knowledge of learners by systematizing the relationships between quizzes and replacing complex problems with a set of simple questions. The educational effectiveness of the system was measured by tests, which showed a higher increase in scores than when the system was not used. The questionnaire also showed that users of the system had positive impressions of the system, such as being able to save the learning time.

Commonly, learners need to find one other page that they read exploring those that correlated with this page in terms of potential interest or knowledge. However, it is hard to do with online learning materials. In that case, automatic page-turning navigation can recommend learning with pages by algorithms designed to calculate the relevance between pages. However, currently, when performing automatic page-turning navigation, it is mainly calculated by the click-through rate of page kin as well, and does not take into account the knowledge content on the page. In this study, a natural language analysis method based on morphological analysis is designed to detect the accuracy of the current automatic page-turning navigation by calculating the relevance of the knowledge contained within a page.

Reading rate is the number of words a user reads per unit of time, also known as reading speed. As online learning has been continuously growing, research on tracking learning behavior is undertaken, and the reading rate was beginning to be applied to measure the learning process. However, current calculating methods are based on the traditional learning environment of a paper-based course, and further research is needed to determine whether they can be used to track students' learning in an online learning environment and integrate with their online reading habits. To this end, this study proposed a new method based on online learning used to calculate reading rate as a measure to track students' learning status, after analyzing students' reading behavior in the e-book learning system. This method not only can identify students with learning difficulties through reading rate outliers, but also provide urgent feedback to students on their reading status.

Learning Support for Career Related Terms with SCROLL and InCircle
In this paper, we describe the support system for job-hunting students to learn job-hunting related terms by using an eBook and a chat system. Job-hunting process is very unique and complicated in Japan. Job-hunting students face difficulties in many phases. Many job-hunting related terms are not used in daily conversation and very new to them. Therefore, it is necessary to support them to learn them. The objectives of this study are (1) to clarify whether there is a positive correlation between active involvement of eBook learning and test performance and (2) to clarify whether the use of our chat system was effective in learning job-hunting related terms. The result of the evaluation showed that as for (1), there was no statistically significant correlation between the two factors. However when focusing on the international students, the correlation coefficient increased. It was aligned with the fact that this system was originally designed to support international students. As for (2), when the comparison was made between with and without InCircle delivery, there was no statistically significant difference between them in terms of Pre- and Post-test improvement. However the students gave the high score when they were asked its helpfulness. The score implies that the students were satisfied with its helpfulness.

In this paper, we developed a digital textbook content improvement system, which can help teachers to find and improve the relevant content of digital textbook objectively based on the contents of quizzes. Based on the DITeL system, we have designed two modules of the system configuration. The first part includes the functions such as registration, modifications and deletions of the contents of questions, optional items and students’ answers, and the calculation and display of average grades ratio about questions which have been answered by students. The second part is based on the question and the correct answer, automatically to search relevant page about the digital textbook. We aim to use the system that students can take quizzes in every lesson to test the level of mastery of their knowledge. And teachers can find which questions that students got lower scores, and which the contents of relevant page about the digital textbook need to be improved.

Seamless collaborative learning method to learn business Japanese with eBook and chat system
The breakthrough of information technology has accelerated the evolutionary change in teaching and learning methodologies. In particular, pervasion of high-efficiency smartphones has raised the potential to generate a new learning environment called seamless learning, which has been drawing much attentions from researchers in pedagogy of any domains. The Japanese government, in 2016, declared “Japan Revitalization Strategy 2016”. It includes the increasing of the number of foreign workers who gain employment in Japan after graduation. They set the goal from 30% to 50% of the international job hunting students find jobs in Japan. Therefore, career education for international students has become an urgent issue to tackle with in Japan. In fact, many universities in Japan have started providing international students with career education such as business Japanese, business communication and career design. Since Japanese job hunting process is very unique, most foreign students have anxieties about it. The objective of this study is to propose an effective business Japanese learning support system. Our ultimate goal is to contribute to the enhancement of their employment rate in Japan.

Since various features have different degrees of association with learning outcome, it is necessary to evaluate each feature by giving a reasonable weight. In this paper, we propose a different weighting of the features, weighting the features is different from other researches, when we carry out Correlation Analysis between these features and grade achieved (in the end of the semester). By using this weighting of the features and the students’ grade achieved, we grouped students into five clusters and analyzed their learning behavioral patterns. We found some interesting patterns, such as the students who always use the MEMO or MAKERS function, always get better grade achieved.

Redesign of a Data Collection in Digital Textbook Systems
This paper describes redesign of data collection in digital textbook systems. Previous studies in the digital textbook systems allow us to collect the data which pages learners were browsing in the digital textbooks. However, it is difficult to collect the data which positions of the pages learners were browsing in the digital textbooks unless using eye-tracking technologies. This study developed a digital textbook system called SEA (Smart E-textbook Application) to collect the data which positions of the pages the learners were browsing in the digital textbooks without eye-tracking technologies. The system automatically hides the texts in the digital textbook system with mask processing. An evaluation experiment was conducted to evaluate the user acceptance regarding our developed system.

This paper describes the development and evaluation of a chat system called InCircle. The importance of cultural understanding in the development of intercultural competence in foreign language learning has been pointed out for a long time. Besides, one of the trends in a pedagogical field is the shift from teacher-centerd to student-centered learning. Recent advancement of IT technology has accelerated its trend. With the spreads of educational application of SNS (social network services), it has enabled us to share information and knowledge in real time. In order to promote student-centered learning, it is necessary to facilitate interaction among students. For these purposes, InCircle was introduced in a language and culture class at university in Japan. The objectives of our research study is to examine whether InCircle contributes to the enhancement of mutual cross-cultural understanding and the facilitation of interaction among students. The number of the students’ posting dramatically increased after it was introduced compared with the blog comment function. The result of the questionnaire endorsed its usability and effectiveness as a communication tool.

© Copyright 2016 for this paper by its authors. The purpose of this paper is to mine or detect meaningful learning patterns for profiling high-achieving students using e-book-based activity logs and questionnaire. The analysis of this study uses association analysis with Apriori algorithm. Logs for this analysis were collected from 99 first-year students who use a document viewer system called BookLooper, questionnaires and Moodle in an information science course at Kyushu University. From the results of the association analysis, we found that high-achieving students and BookLooer have significant relationships in terms of preparation and review time. This paper believes that the profiling and analysis can be used to predict their final grades and to detect effective learning patterns.

Smart phone based data collecting system for analyzing learning behaviors
Nowadays, it is a hot topic to analyze the huge amount of data in the world. This issue also exists in the learning during students' life. The learning data are collected only to record students' learning status. As a result, most learning data are not used to improve the quality of learning for students. In this paper, we propose an order made education system, which can recommend students to select the courses they want to learn. In order to analyze students' learning behaviors, we collect students' learning data by using mobile devices.

The one-way information provision can not impress the listeners well. As an efficient way, Question & Answer can
help information provider understand the response of listeners. However, it is not easy for everyone to set a suitable question.
In this paper, we propose an automatic quiz generation system using tourism blogs. The system can generate the quiz by
extracting feature words of the topic keyword from the blogs. Our purpose is to help the tourism information providers to
advertise their tourism events in an interactive way, in order to impress the tourists. By comparing with other method of quiz
generation, we demonstrate that our method is more suitable for information provision.

With the rapid development of information technology, information retrieval has become a natural way of learning
behaviors and problem-solving. The capability of individual network information retrieval will definitely affect the efficiency of an
individual using the network and gaining access to knowledge. Therefore, in the information age, the capability has become a basic
quality that people should have. But in reality, most people have the poor capabilities of network information retrieval and also lack
effective search strategies, which gives rise to psychological anxiety and fatigue. The capabilities of individual network information
retrieval are influenced by some factors, such as their psychological characteristics, existing knowledge and experience, task
characteristics and optional network system. During network information retrieval process, the individual can adopt cooperative
strategy, learning or observing strategy, supporting strategy, retrieval reflection strategy and anxiety weakening strategies, to solve the
problem or task by "socialized - explicit - integrated - implicit" process, and to reach the goal of knowledge growth.

Focused search using community search logs
© 2013 SDIWC. Search engines have become an increasingly important educational tool. Finding information has become an easy exercise by just typing a few keywords into a search engine text-box. However, some people may not use a search engine effectively. Students may not know how to choose proper keywords. They may have difficulty in selecting the relevant information from millions of search results. In this paper, we propose a search engine system which shares search queries and browsing history among students. We call the search queries and browsing history "community search logs". This system analyzes the community search logs, and shares students' knowledge and experience to each other. Our purpose is with help students, especially those who are not good at searching, to improve their searching efficiency.

An SNS-based literature review system for conducting a research survey
It is necessary to perform a literature review before starting a new research project. However, many students do not know the procedures of performing a literature review. In this paper, based on the professional experiences and opinions of expert researchers, we describe an SNS-based literature review system to help students conduct research surveys. This system includes two search engines, one is an article search engine, which can help students conduct research surveys, and the other is a logging search engine, which allows students to learn from each other via their logs and share experience with other students. User models of the system as well as its functions are presented.

  • Exploring students' backtracking behaviors in digital textbooks and its relationship to learning styles

Bo Jiang, Meijun Gu, Chengjiu Yin

    2022.5

     More details

The purpose of this study is to explore students' backtracking patterns in
using a digital textbook and reveal the relationship between backtracking
behaviors and academic performance as well as learning styles. The study was
carried out for two semesters on 102 university students and they are required
to use a digital textbook system called DITeL to review courseware. Students'
backtracking behaviors are characterized by seven backtracking features
extracted from interaction log data and their learning styles are measured by
Felder-Silverman learning style model. The results of the study reveal that
there is a subgroup of students called backtrackers who backtrack more
frequently and performed better than the average students. Furthermore, the
causal inference analysis reveals that a higher initial ability can directly
cause a higher frequency of backtracking, thus affecting the final test score.
In addition, most backtrackers are reflective and visual learners, and the
seven backtracking features are good predictors in automatically identifying
learning styles. Based on the results of qualitative data analysis,
recommendations were made on how to provide prompt backtracking assistants and
automatically detect learning styles in digital textbooks.

An important issue in education systems is the ability to determine the characteristics of a learner and then to provide suitable guidance in response. In this paper a system was built to classify a learner's errors into categories (Kroll 1990, Weltig 2004) with the purpose of identifying the error characteristics of a learner studying English composition. More specifically, machine learning was undertaken on the writings of learners on the Lang-8 foreign language learning community site.

Since evaluation of food is subjective and the feeling is expressed in Japanese, onomatopoeia is used in many cases. In cooking and sweets, the onomatopoeia used is different. In order to grasp the meaning of onomatopoeia, we need to read and compare the situation where each onomatopoeia is used. In this report, the "Double Rank" method which the first author proposed is applied to Blog documents to compare and to analyze Blogs.set of all words gains the best performance if 90% of the data are used as a training data. However, the set of a small number of words with positive scores outperforms other feature sets, if the training data is only 10%. In such a realistic situation, the feature words are effective in improving discernment.

Extraction of subjective context-sensitive evaluation of Japanese onomatopoeic expressions and its applications
Onomatopoeic expressions are frequently used in Japanese but, as well as other types of subjective adjectival and adverbial expressions, their Kansei evaluative value, or their Kansei polarity, depends on genre and context and is difficult to describe, let alone their exact meaning. In this study, an automatic extraction method of Kansei polarities of Japanese onomatopoeic expressions according to genre and context is proposed. It uses the contrastive use of pair expressions with seemingly opposite Kansei polarities in different genres and contexts, and the results of our experiments indicate that our method is effective for better descriptions of onomatopoeic expressions. © 2011 ISSN 1881-803X.
