Food cellars, otherwise referred to as ice or meat cellars, (lednik in Russian, k'aetyran in Chukchi, si????uaq in Inupiaq, and siqlugaq in Yupik) are a natural form of refrigeration in permafrost or seasonally frozen ground used to preserve, age, and ferment foods harvested for subsistence, including marine mammals, birds, fish, and plants. Indigenous peoples throughout the Arctic have constructed cellars in frozen ground for millennia. This paper focuses on cellars in Russian and American coastal and island communities of the Bering Strait, the region otherwise known as Beringia. This area has a unique, culturally rich, and politically dynamic history. Many traditions associated with cellars are threatened in Chukchi communities in Russia because of the impacts of climate change, relocation, dietary changes, and industrial development. However, even with warmer temperatures, cellars still provide a means to age and ferment food stuffs following traditional methods. In cooperation with local stakeholders, we measured internal temperatures of 18 cellars in 13 communities throughout the Bering Strait region and northern Alaska. Though cellars are widely used in permafrost regions, their structure, usage, and maintenance methods differ and exhibit influences of local climates, traditions, and economic activities. Monitoring internal temperatures and recording structural descriptions of cellars is important in the face of climate change to better understand the variety and resilience of living adaptations in different cold regions.

This book explores indigenous dances and social relationships surrounding the dance activities among Yupik on St. Lawrence Island and Iñupiat in Utqiag?vik, Northern Alaska. Yupik and Iñupiat proudly distinguish their indigenous styles of dance, locally called 'Eskimo dance', from Western styles of dance, such as ballroom, disco or ballet. Based on two years of intensive fieldwork and 18 years of experience living in Alaska, Ikuta sets out to understand how Yupik and Iñupiaq dances are at the centre of social relationships with the environment, among humans, between humans and animals, and between Native and the Euro-American societies. It also examines how the nature and structure of dance are connected to cultural politics, wrought by political, economic and historical events.

In 2018, the United Nations declared the rights of Indigenous Peoples Initiatives to secure economic and subsistence activities. Today, Native leaders in the Arctic consider food sovereignty as one of the highest priorities in the era of climate change. Subsistence fishing and hunting are important for both economies and cultures in Alaska. According to our research in over 90 rural Alaskan communities, an estimated 20,596 ton of wild foods are harvested annually for subsistence use, and approximately 30% of the households accounts for 70% of subsistence harvests in a community. In other words, the majority of households heavily depend on wildfood shared by high harvesters. Meanwhile, 20-30 % of households report that when considering both subsistence and store-bought resources together, their food do not last and they cannot get more. This presentation will explore how food security among Alaska Natives is related to structures, flows, and dynamics of food sharing. By doing so, it presents vulnerability and resilience of subsistence-cash economies today.

Subsistence fishing and hunting are a principal characteristic of the rural Alaskan economy. In the Alaskan Arctic, over 4,657 ton of wild food is harvested annually, which is considered to be over US$82 million of “replacement monetary value.” In 2012-2015, as one of the principle investigators at the Alaska State Government research institution, I participated in comprehensive subsistence surveys in five out of the six bowhead whaling communities on the Alaskan North Slope. The project collected information about their harvest, sharing, and use of more than 100 species of fish, land and marine mammals, birds, and wild plants, as well as food security, food networks, and mapping areas used by community residents for subsistence fishing and hunting. By focusing on Barrow, the largest whaling community in Alaska where approximately 25 edible ton of bowhead whale has been consumed annually, this presentation explores the role and importance of bowhead whaling in the Alaskan Arctic subsistence economy.

In this project, we investigated colonization, resource development, climate change, and other impacts of disasters on Indigenous communities in Alaska and the Northwest Coast region of North America spanning over 150 years. We focused on art production, subsistence and commercial fishing, and traditional tangible and intangible culture to elucidate Indigenous responses. The research findings were disseminated through international symposiums, exhibitions, and publications. Moreover, recognizing the necessity of collaborative research with local Indigenous peoples and researchers both domestically and internationally to build resilient and sustainable Indigenous societies and cultures in the future, we established networks for research cooperation between Indigenous source communities and domestic and international researchers and research institutions in this project.

This study ethnographically investigated efforts toward building a sustainable society, focusing on large scale natural resource development projects in southwest Alaska, USA. It examined the Donlin gold mining project, located on land owned by Indigenous people, and subsistence fishing targeting salmon, analyzing the strategies of local residents, governments, and development companies. By organizing their relationships and tracing shifts in their perspectives, it comprehensively explored the multifaceted vision of a sustainable society that people aim for amidst the preservation of ecology, culture, and livelihoods, and the pursuit of economic development.
