Profile
I work as a faculty coordinator for the JTW (Japan in Today's World) program in the International Student Center, Kyushu University. I received my Ph.D. in Education from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 2017. Some of my recent publications can be found in edited books (Gomes & Chang, 2021; Phan & Doan, 2020) and academic journals (Research in Comparative and International Education, 2020; JALT, 2019) as well as my own book entitled: Transcending Self and Other Through Akogare [Desire]: The English Language and the Internationalization of Higher Education in Japan, published in 2018. I've also served as an invited referee for Current Issues in Language Planning, Nations and Nationalism, Asian Studies Review, etc. My research interests include issues of linguistic, racial, ethnic, national, class, and gender-related identities, particularly in transnational education contexts.

Educational Activities

As liberal arts courses, I teach "Self & Identity in Contemporary Japan," "Education in Japanese Society," "Gender and Sexuality in Today's Japan," and "International and Multicultural Education in Japan." I also teach some graduate-level courses and participate in team-teaching courses throughout the year. Although most courses are designed for English-speaking students, I encourage Japanese-speaking students to register for or audit these courses, in hopes that students of diverse backgrounds share a sense of community and learn from one another. I also develop and conduct international exchange events, offer study abroad/international learning consultations, and orientations for students who serve as tutors/supporters for international students on campus. Given the ongoing global challenges, I've been engaging and collaborating with the wider education community to stay updated on the best practices for online teaching and learning.
