    A review. Direct CO2 capture from the air, so-​called direct air capture (DAC)​, has become inevitable to reduce the concn. of CO2 in the atm. Current DAC technologies consider only sorbent-​based systems. Recently, there were reports that show ultrahigh CO2 permeances in gas sepn. membranes and thus membrane sepn. could be a potential new technol. for DAC in addn. to sorbent-​based CO2 capture. The simulation of chem. processes was well established and is commonly used for the development and performance assessment of industrial chem. processes. These simulations offer a credible assessment of the feasibility of membrane-​based DAC (m-​DAC)​. In this paper, we discuss the potential of m-​DAC considering the state-​of-​the-​art performance of org. polymer membranes. The multistage membrane sepn. process was employed in process simulation to est. the energy requirements for m-​DAC. Based on the anal., we propose the target membrane sepn. performance required for m-​DAC with competitive energy expenses. Finally, we discuss the direction of future membrane development for DAC.

    In this work, we deposited a CO2-​selective block copolymer, Pebax-​1657, as a selective layer with a thickness of 2-​20 nm on the oxygen plasma-​activated surface of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) used as a gutter layer (thickness ~ 400 nm)​. This double-​layered structure was subsequently transferred onto the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) microporous support and studied for CO2/N2 sepn. The effect of interfacial mol. arrangements between the selective and gutter layers on CO2 permeance and selectivity has been investigated. We have revealed that the gas permeance and selectivity do not follow the conventional theor. predictions for the multilayer membrane (resistance in series transport model)​; specifically, more selective CO2/N2 sepn. membranes were achieved with ultrathin selective layers. Detailed characterization of the chem. structure of the outermost membrane surface suggests that nanoscale blending of the ultrathin Pebax-​1657 layer with O2 plasma-​activated PDMS chains on the surface takes place. This nanoblending at the interface between the selective and gutter layers played a crit. role in enhancing the CO2/N2 selectivity. CO2 permeance in the developed thin-​film composite membranes (TFCM) were between 1200 and 3500 gas permeance units (GPU) and the resp. CO2/N2 selectivities were between 72 and 23, providing the gas sepn. performance suitable for CO2 capture in postcombustion processes. This interpenetrating polymer interface enhanced the overall selectivity of the membrane significantly, exceeding the sepn. ability of the pristine Pebax-​1657 polymer.

    The effect of thickness in multilayer thin-film composite membranes on gas permeation has received little attention to date, and the gas permeances of the organic polymer membranes are believed to increase by membrane thinning. Moreover, the performance of defect-free layers with known gas permeability can be effectively described using the classical resistance in series models to predict both permeance and selectivity of the composite membrane. In this work, we have investigated the Pebax®-MH1657/PDMS double layer membrane as a selective/gutter layer combination that has the potential to achieve sufficient CO2/N2 selectivity and permeance for efficient CO2 and N2 separation. CO2 and N2 transport through membranes with different thicknesses of two layers has been investigated both experimentally and with the utilization of resistance in series models. Model prediction for permeance/selectivity corresponded perfectly with experimental data for the thicker membranes. Surprisingly, a significant decrease from model predictions was observed when the thickness of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) (gutter layer) became relatively small (below 2 µm thickness). Material properties changed at low thicknesses-surface treatments and influence of porous support are discussed as possible reasons for observed deviations.

    Porous polymers offer great advantages compared to other microporous materials in terms of solubility and processability. However, the design of porous polymers has suffered from the limited availability of suitable building blocks. Here we propose a conceptually new strategy for the design of porous polymers, which involves the transformation of a rigid linear polymer into a rigid zigzag polymer with a large free volume around the polymer backbone. This strategy relies on a boron-mediated alkyne benzannulation reaction, which was recently developed by our group. When the benzannulation reaction was applied to poly(phenylene ethynylene) (PPE) derivatives, a linear-to-zigzag structural transformation successfully occurred to give the corresponding p-conjugated polymers with a diarylphenanthrene unit in the main chain. As revealed by N2 adsorption experiments, while the parent PPEs were non-porous, the zigzag polymers in the solid state possessed porosity with a specific surface area of up to 366 m2 g1, where the surface area largely depended on the steric bulkiness of the substituents on the polymer. Considering the fact that a wide variety of PPE derivatives have so far been synthesized, the present strategy may open a new avenue for the development of functional porous polymers.

    A family of chiral perylene diimides (PDIs) was newly developed as excellent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials. They are asymmetrically derivatized with a double-alkyl-chained L- or D-glutamate unit and a linear or branched alkyl chain. When water is added to the tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution of glutamate-PDI-linear-alkyl chain compounds, kinetically formed H-aggregates are formed in globular nanoparticles (NPs). These NPs undergo spontaneous transformation into thermodynamically stable nanotubes via helical nanostructures, which showed structured broad spectra originating from the strong coupling of delocalized Frenkel excitations (FE) and charge transfer excitations (CTE). Significant enhancement of circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence quantum yield, and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) are observed during the transformation of NPs to the FE/CTE-coupled helical and tubular structures. This transformation process is significantly accelerated by applying physical stimuli, i.e., ultrasonication or adding helical aggregates as seed crystals, a feature unique to living supramolecular polymerization. Meanwhile, the branched chain-containing PDIs only form H-aggregates and did not show FE/CTE hybrid exciton states with living supramolecular polymerization properties. This study unveils that suitably designed chiral PDI derivatives show FE/CTE coupling accompanied by high fluorescence quantum yields, enhanced chiroptical properties, and supramolecular living polymerization characteristics.

    CO2 capture technology is important as a solution to global warming and climate change. This technology is needed not only for CO2 emission reduction, but also for more aggressive capture, i.e., direct capture of CO2 from the atmosphere. In recent years, several approaches have been reported for anthropogenic direct CO2 capture technology referred to as Direct Air Capture (DAC). Although membrane separation is a low–cost and space–saving CO2 capture technology, the conventional separation membranes do not have sufficient CO2 permeability, and membrane separation for DAC has been considered impossible. Considering the ubiquitous nature of atmospheric air, membrane separation is advantageous compared to other CO2 capture technologies because of its simplicity, small footprint, no installation restrictions, and environmental friendliness. This review summarizes current DAC technologies and the challenges of using CO2 separation membranes for DAC and recent related research and discusses the future potential of membrane DAC.

    Direct CO2 capture from the air by membranes (membrane-based DAC, m-DAC) is a promising new technique to achieve CO2 net zero emissions. In addition, a continuous system for CO2 capture and its reduction by hydrogen using coupled reactors has scarcely been investigated. In this study, a new continuous system consisting of an m-DAC and a methanation process (m-DAC-M) was developed. For methanation, Ni nanoparticles supported on Ca-loaded Al2O3 (Ni-Ca/Al2O3; 10 wt% Ni and 6 wt% CaO) were utilized as a dual functional material (DFM). The Ni-Ca/Al2O3 exhibited high CH4 productivity and selectivity, good stability over 100 h, and high humidity resistance properties at a low reaction temperature of 350 °C. The catalytic properties of Ni-Ca/Al2O3 were elucidated using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The characterization results indicated that the CaO species not only served as CO2 adsorption sites to trap concentrated CO2 from the m-DAC system but also improved the reducibility of oxidized Ni species in the hydrogenation period, thereby promoting the reduction of surface carbonate species to CH4.

    In this study, we investigated the effect of morphology on the gas-transport properties of a poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBA) multiblock copolymer. We annealed the copolymer samples and varied the annealing temperature to evaluate the influence of changes in the microstructure on the gas transport properties of PEBA. In addition, we used time-resolved attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to evaluate the diffusion coefficient of CO2 in PEBA based on the Fickian model. The effect of the annealing temperature on the microphase-separated structure of the multiblock copolymer is discussed in detail. Furthermore, the gas diffusivity was significantly affected by the purity of the soft domains. The annealed sample demonstrated a 38% increase in CO2 permeability while maintaining a high CO2/N2 permselectivity of approximately 53. The findings of this study provide valuable insight into the design and optimization of PEBA membranes for gas separation applications.

    In this study we employ density functional theory to investigate the binding interaction between polydimethylsiloxane and CO2 for application in gas separation membranes. The binding strength has been studied systematically as a function of the monomer conformational rotations in the polymer chain. Our work identified major differences between the CO2 interaction with the helical conformation and the linear conformation of polydimethylsiloxane polymer chains. We have further estimated dependence between the CO2 binding strength and the polydimethylsiloxane polymer chain curvature by systematically evaluating the CO2 binding to cyclic polydimethylsiloxane oligomers. The enhanced CO2 interaction with helical chains and cyclic oligomers was attributed to cooperative, confinement effects, and local electron density distribution at the Si–O–Si fragments. The binding modes were identified using vibration frequency analysis.

    The development of CO2 capture technology is essential as a global warming mitigation technology that will lead to the suppression of climate change. Gas separation membranes have great potential for direct air capture (DAC), which captures CO2 directly from the atmosphere, as well as from large CO2 emission sources, due to their low energy consumption and small footprint. However, membrane–based DAC has never been considered because of its low CO2 permeance. Recently, there have been report of high CO2 permeance membranes which would be promising candidate for DAC process. In this review paper, the recent studies of membranes with high CO2 permeance are summarized and discuss with molecular design of membranes in addition to our recent efforts to improve CO2 selectivity of nanometer–thick freestanding membranes by chemical modification of the membrane surface.

    Current greenhouse gas emissions suggest that keeping global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees, as espoused in the Paris Agreements will be challenging, and to do so, the achievement of carbon neutrality is of utmost importance. It is also clear that no single solution can meet the carbon neutral challenge, so it is essential for scientific research to cover a broad range of technologies and initiatives which will enable the realization of a carbon free energy system. This study details the broad, yet targeted research themes being pioneered within the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER). These approaches include hydrogen materials, bio-mimetic catalysts, electrochemistry, thermal energy and absorption, carbon capture, storage and management and refrigerants. Here we outline the state of the art for this suite of technologies and detail how their deployment, alongside prudent energy policy implementation can engender a carbon neutral Japan by 2050. Recognizing that just as no single technological solution will engender carbon neutrality, no single nation can expect to achieve this goal alone. This study represents a recognition of conducive international policy agendas and is representative of interdisciplinary, international collaboration.

    Carbon capture and storage has been considered as a realistic approach to reducing atm. CO2 concns. However, the cost of capturing high-​purity CO2 typically used for geol. storage (e.g., 98​%) is high. Direct air capture (DAC)​, a technol. that exts. CO2 of relatively low-​purity from the ambient atm., has been recently proposed as a means to achieve neg. CO2 emissions when the product is sequestered underground. Although the CO2 produced by DAC is of low-​purity, the other gaseous components (mainly nitrogen and oxygen) are not hazardous materials like NOx and SOx that must be typically dealt with by conventional projects in coal-​burning plants. Here, we evaluate geol. storage of the low-​purity CO2 captured via advanced membrane-​based DAC technol. The ubiquity of ambient air is important in reducing transport costs and ensuring social acceptance as the CO2 product can be both produced and stored at sites in remote areas, such as deserts and offshore platforms. We calcd. the d. of CO2-​N2-​O2 mixts. via mol. dynamics simulation and evaluated the cost of the low-​purity CO2 storage. Our evaluation suggests that the storage of low-​purity CO2 in geol. formations is environmentally acceptable and economically viable.

    Climate change caused by emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is a most important issue for our society. The anthropogenic nature of climate change necessitates development of novel technological solutions in order to reverse the current carbon dioxide (CO2) trajectory. Direct CO2 capture from the air (direct air capture, DAC) is one among a variety of negative emission technologies that are expected to keep global warming below 1.5 °C, as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC). CO2 capture by permselective membranes is advantageous because of its smaller and simpler set-up. We have developed highly CO2 permeable nanomembrane which could separate CO2 from N2 stream with 1000 ppm of CO2 at the ambient condition. In addition, CO2 capture by membrane separation has no restrictions on the point of installation when implemented in society, so CO2 can be captured anywhere by membrane technology. This ubiquity of CO2 capture is an advantage of membrane separation, given that air can be found anywhere on the earth. Here, the potential of membrane separation for DAC is discussed and the perspective of membrane-based DAC and subsequent CO2 conversion technologies being developed in Kyushu University will be described.

    地球温暖化対策として、CO2を大気から直接回収する技術(Direct Air Capture, DAC)が求められている。CO2主要排出国であるG20メンバー国の主要都市域では大気CO2濃度が高く1、都市部などでのCO2回収は重要となる。また大気は地球上に遍く存在するため、場所を選ばず分散配置可能なCO2回収(ユビキタスCO2回収)は必須技術となろう。分離膜を用いるCO2回収は、一般的に回収エネルギーが低く、また省スペースでの回収が可能である。また分離膜ユニットの組み合わせによって、回収スケールが調整可能であるため、分離膜を用いるDACは有効な技術の一つである。
    これに対し我々は、独自のナノ膜技術によって、従来のCO2透過度世界最高値の約20倍という、圧倒的に高いCO2透過度を持ちつつも、選択的なCO2透過をする、CO2分離ナノ膜(厚さ:約30 nm)の開発に成功した。2さらにこの分離ナノ膜は、大気レベルに匹敵する濃度しかないCO2/N2混合ガス([CO2]=1,000 ppm)でも、約30%のCO2量の分離をすることに成功している。さらに分離プロセスシミュレーションによって、低エネルギーかつ多段分離で、大気からCO2を40%以上に濃縮可能であること示唆された。3 つまり膜を用いたDAC (membrane-based DAC, m-DAC)は次世代DAC技術として有望である。  
    開発している分離ナノ膜は、自立性をもつため、「同じ分離ナノ膜」を使って、その表裏での分離挙動評価が可能であるが、製膜時における分離膜表面が接している界面の違いによって、ガス透過性に影響を与えていることが確認された。すなわち分離膜表面のわずかな違いが分離膜表面へのガス収着挙動に際を与え、全体として分離膜表裏でのガス透過挙動の違いが得られているということが明らかになった。これは、膜表面の分子設計が分離膜の高性能化に重要な要素であることを示すものである。
    また回収したCO2を有益な物質に変換するユニットも重要である。我々は他研究者と連携し、回収したCO2をそのまま連続的に有用物質に変換するシステムと連携し、メタンやエチレン、一酸化炭素など、重要な基幹化成品の製造に成功している。本講演では)この分離ナノ膜を使ったCO2回収ユニットと、小型化可能なCO2還元ユニットを組み合わせたDirect Air Capture and Utilization (DAC-U)システムについても紹介する。

     我が国は、地球温暖化問題への対処を始めとし、大規模自然災害への備え、安定したエネルギーセキュリティの確保など、多くの困難な課題を抱えている。我々の研究グループでは、地球上に遍く存在する「大気」という特徴を考慮し、場所を選ばず分散配置可能なCO2回収(ユビキタスCO2回収)を基本コンセプトとし、さらにこの回収ユニットとCO2を変換するユニットが一体となったシステムを開発し、大気中からのCO2回収(Direct Air Capture, DAC)と炭素資源の地域循環を目指す。これにより大気中のCO2濃度の低下による、地球温暖化の抑止に貢献する。

    大気からのCO2を起点とする炭素資源循環に向けて。CO2回収部分は特に重要な役割を担う。CO2回収源となる「大気」は地球上に遍く存在することを最大限に生かすためには、様々な場所で、その場所に応じた規模で導入設置可能であるという、分散配置性・スケーラビリティ性は重要な要素となる。また、全世界のCO2排出のうち、78%はG20メンバー国から排出されており、そのメンバー国の多くは北半球に存在する。特に北半球の主要先進国やその主要都市域の大気CO2濃度が高い。1) 従って人口が集中する都市部や経済活動地域でのCO2回収は特に重要となる。従って真に分散配置・スケーラブルなDACシステムのためには、人的・環境的に有害になりうるCO2回収薬剤などを使わず、モジュール化が可能で、低エネルギーかつ省スペースでのCO2回収技術が必要となる。これまで数多くのCO2回収技術が報告されているが、分離膜を用いるCO2回収は、一般的に回収エネルギーが低く、また省スペースでの回収が可能である。また分離膜ユニットの組み合わせによって、任意のスケールに調整可能である。従って課題解決の観点からは、分離膜を用いるCO2回収が最も有効である。


    2.ユビキタスCO2を実現するCO2分離ナノ膜
    従来のガス選択分離膜は、ガス透過性が低いため、大気という膨大な量の膜分離例は皆無であり、考慮・検討すらされていないのが現状である。2) このように膜分離がDACとして考慮されていなかった根本的な原因は、「分離膜の低いCO2透過性」であった。
    これに対し我々は、独自のナノ膜技術によって、従来のCO2透過度世界最高値の約20倍という、圧倒的に高いCO2透過度を持ちつつも、選択的なCO2透過をする、CO2分離ナノ膜(厚さ:約30 nm)の開発に成功した。さらにこの分離ナノ膜は、大気レベルに匹敵する濃度しかないCO2/N2混合ガス([CO2]=1,000 ppm)でも、1気圧程度の圧力差でも、約30%のCO2量の分離をすることに成功している。3) この分離ナノ膜は透過量が極めて高いため、膜透過による圧損が少なく、従って多段分離も可能である。事実、プロセスシミュレーター(Aspen Plus)を用いた計算でも、従来の膜に比べて、低エネルギーでの多段分離が可能であり、これによってCO2を40%以上に濃縮可能であると示唆された。4) つまり膜を用いたDAC (membrane-based DAC, m-DAC)は次世代DAC技術として有望である。

    また回収したCO2を有益な物質に変換するユニットも重要である。九州大学では、独自開発のフロー型電気化学セルを用いて、高効率でメタンやエチレン、一酸化炭素など、重要な基幹化成品の製造に成功している。5)この分離ナノ膜を使ったCO2回収ユニットと、小型化可能なCO2還元ユニットを組み合わせ、さらに相互連結可能なDirect Air Capture and Utilization (DAC-U)システムを開発し、大気を起点とする炭素資源循環システムを目指す。

    The development of CO2 capture technology is essential as a global warming mitigation technology that will lead to the suppression of climate change. Gas separation membranes have great potential for direct air capture (DAC), which captures CO2 directly from the atmosphere, as well as from large CO2 emission sources, due to their low energy consumption and small footprint. However, membrane–based DAC has never been considered because of its low CO2 permeance. Recently, there have been report of high CO2 permeance membranes which would be promising candidate for DAC process. In this review paper, the recent studies of membranes with high CO2 permeance are summarized and discuss with molecular design of membranes in addition to our recent efforts to improve CO2 selectivity of nanometer–thick freestanding membranes by chemical modification of the membrane surface.

    大気中のCO2濃度を低下させ、地球温暖化を抑止することは、人類共通課題である。本プロジェクトでは、大気中の希薄なCO2を膜で回収し、それをオンサイトで資源化する、分散配置型のCO2循環システムを開発する。これによって、地球温暖化の主たる原因であるCO2削減と炭素資源循環を実現する。
    具体的には、独自ナノ膜技術によって開発された、桁違いのCO2透過性を有する革新的な分離ナノ膜を出発点とし、選択性が向上したCO2分離ナノ膜からなるCO2回収ユニットと、回収したCO2を炭素燃料に高効率で変換するユニットを開発する。この二つのユニットを自在に連結し、大気からのCO2回収から炭素燃料変換までを一貫して行う「Direct Air Capture and Utilization (DAC-U)システム」を創製する。またこのシステムに、相互連結による高い拡張性を持たせる。これにより、太陽光発電システムと同様に、導入スペース、用途、条件に合わせて、家庭用の小規模からビル等の中規模まで対応するサイズスケーラブルなオンサイトシステムとなる。この革新的なDAC-Uシステムによって、地上に遍く存在する大気から、場所に依存することなく、どこでも(ユビキタス)CO2の回収とその資源化を図り、気候変動問題の解決だけでなく、炭素資源の地産地消並びに資源循環によるエネルギーロバスト(robust, 堅牢)な社会構築を実現する。

    地球温暖化抑制技術の一つとして、膜分離によるCO2回収が有望視されている。しかしながら既存のCO2分離膜は透過性能が低い。従って分離膜のCO2透過性向上が喫緊の課題となっており、分離膜の薄膜化はその有効な手段の一つである。本研究では、高いCO2透過性を有する自立ナノ膜(膜厚:100nm以下)の表面にCO2親和性を持つ分子層を導入し、高い透過性と選択性を持つCO2分離膜の創製を目的とする。本研究により、ナノ分離膜の選択・透過性が分離表面で決定されることが実証されれば、CO2分離膜の透過性能向上というだけでなく、分離膜一般に関して展開可能であり、大きな波及効果が期待される。

    The objective of this research is to develop a CO2 separation membrane with both high permeability and selectivity by introducing an ultra-thin polymer layer with CO2 affinity only on the surface of the freestanding PDMS nanomembrane, which has high CO2 permeability. This will break away from the conventional gas separation principle that separation and permeation performance is governed by the solubility and diffusion of gas molecules to the membrane, and present a new separation membrane structure in which the adsorption and desorption of gas molecules on the separation membrane surface determines the permeation and selectivity of the entire membrane. The final goal is to establish a new design guideline for separation membranes, in which the permeation performance of a gas separation membrane is controlled by the molecular design of the interface.

    本研究では、研究代表者である田中が持つ、可視光領域で動作するメタマテリアルの構造設計、トップダウン的レーザー加工法、光学特性評価法、応用デバイスなどに関する研究成果の知識と経験を基礎として、さらにボトムアップ型加工技術を専門とする研究分担者を加えることで、可視域で動作する3次元メタマテリアルをmm~cm角サイズで実現することを目指す。
    メタマテリアルはナノメートルスケールの金属共振器の3次元集合体であり、これを加工するには、高いQ値を稼ぐための高精度な金属構造を膨大な数集積化させなければいけないので、その実現にはトップダウン的な加工技術とボトムアップ的な技術を密に融合させることが必須である。田中が開発したメタマテリアルの構造設計プロトコルを元に、ボトムアップアップ手法が潜在的に持つ構造の揺らぎを意識して、これを許容しながら高いQ値を得るための最適な構造を探る。さらに田中は、自身が開発した2光子還元法の高速化と量産化を進め、3次元金属ナノ共振器構造の基本形成技術を確立する。彌田はdi-block-copolymerの自己組織化ナノ構造や生物がもつマイクロ/ナノ構造をテンプレートに用いたメタマテリアルの構造形成法を研究する。藤川は自身が開発したナノコーティングリソグラフィー法をメタマテリアルの加工に展開し、共振器を高精度に保持・集積化させるための大面積ホスト構造の開発を行う。これらと平行して,田中のグループでは,化学的に合成した金属ナノ粒子を液体界面に分散させ、それらを配列・集積化させるための手法の開発にも着手する。これら各分担者自身の研究の推進と平行して,互いに密接に連携しながらそれぞれの方法の融合を図り,さらに、他の計画研究で開発される手法も取り入れて、未だ実現されていないmm~cmオーダーの3次元光メタマテリアルを実現する。以上の3次元光メタマテリアル作製技術の展開をベースに他研究計画と協力して新機能メタマテリアル創出を目指す。

Outline of Social Contribution and International Cooperation activities

  • – Strengthen collaboration between Japanese and Swedish universities.
    – Provide researchers at an early stage of their career with knowledge, contacts, and networks to become future leaders of joint Swedish and Japanese research and education activities.
    – Identify areas of common interest between Swedish and Japanese universities for long-term research and education collaboration activities.
    – Encourage joint research activities in relevant fields using Swedish and Japanese large-scale research facilities.
    – Initiate a dialogue between Swedish and Japanese funding agencies for future joint funding opportunities.
    – Understand how innovation systems work in Japan and Sweden.
    – Increase the understanding of each other’s culture and societal conditions as the basis for future cooperation activities.
