The first results of the study of high-energy electron neutrino (νe) and muon neutrino (νμ) charged-current interactions in the FASERν emulsion-tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC are presented. A 128.8 kg subset of the FASERν volume was analyzed after exposure to 9.5 fb-1 of s=13.6 TeV pp data. Four (eight) νe (νμ) interaction candidate events are observed with a statistical significance of 5.2σ (5.7σ). This is the first direct observation of νe interactions at a particle collider and includes the highest-energy νe and νμ ever detected from an artificial source. The interaction cross section per nucleon σ/Eν is measured over an energy range of 560-1740 GeV (520-1760 GeV) for νe (νμ) to be (1.2-0.7+0.8)×10-38 cm2 GeV-1 [(0.5±0.2)×10-38 cm2 GeV-1], consistent with standard model predictions. These are the first measurements of neutrino interaction cross sections in those energy ranges.

The Forward Search Experiment (FASER) at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has recently directly detected the first collider neutrinos. Neutrinos play an important role in all FASER analyses, either as signal or background, and it is therefore essential to understand the neutrino event rates. In this study, we update previous simulations and present prescriptions for theoretical predictions of neutrino fluxes and cross sections, together with their associated uncertainties. With these results, we discuss the potential for possible measurements that could be carried out in the coming years with the FASER neutrino data to be collected in LHC Run 3 and Run 4.

We report the first direct observation of neutrino interactions at a particle collider experiment. Neutrino candidate events are identified in a 13.6 TeV center-of-mass energy pp collision dataset of 35.4 fb-1 using the active electronic components of the FASER detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The candidates are required to have a track propagating through the entire length of the FASER detector and be consistent with a muon neutrino charged-current interaction. We infer 153-13+12 neutrino interactions with a significance of 16 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis. These events are consistent with the characteristics expected from neutrino interactions in terms of secondary particle production and spatial distribution, and they imply the observation of both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with an incident neutrino energy of significantly above 200 GeV.

This paper describes a new νe identification method specifically designed to improve the low-energy (< 30 GeV) νe identification efficiency attained by enlarging the emulsion film scanning volume with the next-generation emulsion readout system. A relative increase of 25–70% in the νe low-energy region is expected, leading to improvements in the OPERA sensitivity to neutrino oscillations in the framework of the 3 + 1 model. The method is applied to a subset of data where the detection efficiency increase is expected to be more relevant, and one additional νe candidate is found. The analysis combined with the ντ appearance results improves the upper limit on sin 22θμe to 0.016 at 90% C.L. in the MiniBooNE allowed region Δm241 ∼ 0.3 eV2

Hypothetical short-range interactions could be detected by measuring the wavefunctions of gravitationally bound ultracold neutrons (UCNs) on a mirror in the Earth's gravitational field. Searches for them with higher sensitivity require detectors with higher spatial resolution. We developed and have been improving an UCN detector with a high spatial resolution, which consists of a Si substrate, a thin converter layer including 10B4C, and a layer of fine-grained nuclear emulsion. Its resolution was estimated to be less than 100 nm by fitting tracks of either 7Li nuclei or α-particles, which were created when neutrons interacted with the 10B4C layer. For actual measurements of the spatial distributions, the following two improvements were made. The first improvement was to establish a method to align microscopic images with high accuracy within a wide region of 65 mm × 0.2 mm. We created reference marks of 1 μm and 5 μm diameter with an interval of 50 μm and 500 μm, respectively, on the Si substrate by electron beam lithography and realized a position accuracy of less than 30 nm. The second improvement was to build a holder for the detector that could maintain the atmospheric pressure around the nuclear emulsion to utilize it under a vacuum during exposure to UCNs. The intrinsic resolution of the improved detector was estimated to be better than 0.56(8) μm by evaluating the blur of a transmission image of a gadolinium grating taken by cold neutrons. The evaluation included the precision of the gadolinium grating. A test exposure was conducted to obtain the spatial distribution of UCNs in the quantized states on a mirror in the Earth's gravitational field. The distribution was obtained, fitted with the theoretical curve, and turned out to be reasonable for UCNs in quantized states when we considered a blurring of 6.9 μm. The blurring was well explained as a result of neutron refraction due to the large surface roughness on the upstream side of the Si substrate. By using a double-side-polished Si substrate, a resolution of less than 0.56 μm is expected to be achieved for UCNs.

The Forward Physics Facility (FPF) is a proposal to create a cavern with the space and infrastructure to support a suite of far-forward experiments at the Large Hadron Collider during the High Luminosity era. Located along the beam collision axis and shielded from the interaction point by at least 100 m of concrete and rock, the FPF will house experiments that will detect particles outside the acceptance of the existing large LHC experiments and will observe rare and exotic processes in an extremely low-background environment. In this work, we summarize the current status of plans for the FPF, including recent progress in civil engineering in identifying promising sites for the FPF and the experiments currently envisioned to realize the FPF's physics potential. We then review the many Standard Model and new physics topics that will be advanced by the FPF, including searches for long-lived particles, probes of dark matter and dark sectors, high-statistics studies of TeV neutrinos of all three flavors, aspects of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, and high-energy astroparticle physics.

FASER is a new experiment designed to search for new light weakly-interacting long-lived particles (LLPs) and study high-energy neutrino interactions in the very forward region of the LHC collisions at CERN. The experimental apparatus is situated 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction-point aligned with the beam collision axis. The FASER detector includes four identical tracker stations constructed from silicon microstrip detectors. Three of the tracker stations form a tracking spectrometer, and enable FASER to detect the decay products of LLPs decaying inside the apparatus, whereas the fourth station is used for the neutrino analysis. The spectrometer has been installed in the LHC complex since March 2021, while the fourth station is not yet installed. FASER will start physics data taking when the LHC resumes operation in early 2022. This paper describes the design, construction and testing of the tracking spectrometer, including the associated components such as the mechanics, readout electronics, power supplies and cooling system.

Knowledge about muon tomography has spread in recent years in the geoscientific community and several collaborations between geologists and physicists have been founded. As the data analysis is still mostly done by particle physicists, much of the know-how is concentrated in particle physics and specialised geophysics institutes. SMAUG (Simulation for Muons and their Applications UnderGround), a toolbox consisting of several modules that cover the various aspects of data analysis in a muon tomographic experiment, aims at providing access to a structured data analysis framework. The goal of this contribution is to make muon tomography more accessible to a broader geoscientific audience. In this study, we show how a comprehensive geophysical model can be built from basic physics equations. The emerging uncertainties are dealt with by a probabilistic formulation of the inverse problem, which is finally solved by a Monte Carlo Markov chain algorithm. Finally, we benchmark the SMAUG results against those of a recent study, which, however, have been established with an approach that is not easily accessible to the geoscientific community. We show that they reach identical results with the same level of accuracy and precision.

Studies of high energy proton interactions have been basic inputs to understand the cosmic-ray spectra observed on the earth. Yet, the experimental knowledge with controlled beams has been limited. In fact, uncertainties of the forward hadron production are very large due to the lack of experimental data. The FASER experiment is proposed to measure particles, such as neutrinos and hypothetical dark-sector particles, at the forward location of the 14 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC. As it corresponds to 100-PeV proton interactions in fixed target mode, a precise measurement by FASER would provide information relevant for PeV-scale cosmic rays. By studying three flavor neutrinos with the dedicated neutrino detector (FASERν), FASER will lead to a quantitative understanding of prompt neutrinos, which is an important background towards the astrophysical neutrino observation by neutrino telescopes such as IceCube. In particular, the electron and tau neutrinos have strong links with charmed hadron production. And, the FASER measurements may also shed light on the unresolved muon puzzle at the high energy. FASER is going to start taking data in 2022. We expect about 8000 numu, 1300 nue and 20 nutau CC interactions at the TeV energy scale during Run 3 of the LHC operation (2022-2024) with a 1.1 tons emulsion-based neutrino detector. We report here the overview and prospect of the FASER experiment in relation to the cosmic-ray physics, together with the first LHC neutrino candidates that we caught in the pilot run held in 2018.

Over the last ten years, radiography by means of absorption of cosmic-ray muons (muography) has been established as a tool for volcano internal structure investigation. Meanwhile, muography has spread out to many other applications. The Eiger-mu project (2015-2019, University of Bern) represents one such development in the field of glaciology, where the high penetration power of muons can be exploited to precisely estimate the topography of the mountains hidden by overlying glaciers. Technological progress and prospects of muography in glaciology are reviewed in this chapter through the pilot experiments performed at the Aletsch and Eiger glaciers in Switzerland.

A precise measurement of the tau neutrino cross section would enable a search for new physics effects, such as testing the Lepton Universality of Standard Model in neutrino interactions. The largest uncertainty in such cross-section measurements is due to a lack of data on the tau neutrino production or Ds differential production. We aim to measure an inclusive differential cross-section of Ds production in p-A interactions, detecting consecutive Ds to tau lepton to X decays which are the source of tau neutrinos. We formed an international collaboration for this research. We designed and produced the detector based on the nuclear emulsion, providing a sub-micron spatial resolution for the detection of short-length and small kink decays, such as Ds to tau to X decays. We successfully performed the beam-exposure experiments at CERN in 2021 and 2022 and are progressing with the analysis.
