Designing haptic stimuli is one of challenges to enrich the virtual reality experience through a head mounted display which offer a photorealistic visual stimuli. Although exaggerated non-photorealistic haptic stimuli are widely used to represent events in virtual world due to limited capacity of haptic interface, the evaluation of its plausibility relies on human subjective assessment. The purpose of this research is to establish a method to objectively evaluate the plausibility of such visual-tactile experience. This study designs a stroop task in which participants are asked to tap an object with a stylus, receive visual stimuli (texture) and tactile stimuli (pulsive vibration) at a time, and respond to answer tactilely felt stiffness (soft or stiff). Our hypothesis is that response time to the stimuli consisting of incongruent visual and tactile combinations (soft-stiff or stiff-soft) becomes longer than those consisting of congruent combinations (soft-soft or stiff-stiff) if the tactile stimuli are felt so plausible as to interfere visual-tactile experience. The results of the experiment indicates the stroop effect, which supports the hypothesis.

Abstract The widespread adoption of consumer HMDs has advanced VR research from traditional laboratory-based studies to the exploration of multisensory experiences designed for user interaction. This article introduces haptic feedback systems integrated into HMDs, user behavior studies in VRSNS, and a system replicating urinary incontinence sensations. These past efforts were presented at GEIKO EXPO 2024, reflecting on and consolidating future directions for haptic experience design.

Considering our perpetual engagement with smartphones and the colossal quantities of information we handle, it is crucial that we possess a smartphone input method with a high degree of usability. We devised a grip input method using an electro-tactile stimulation interface on the edges of a smartphone. This method is characterized by two distinctive features: it converts changes in finger contact area into input as opposed to relying on force sensing, and it provides softness sensation as input feedback through the electro-tactile stimulation. We first evaluated the grip input's performance in relation to changes in finger contact area and found it to be exceptionally high. Then, we evaluated the change in perception with and without two types of electro-tactile stimulations and observed that the electro-tactile stimulation resulted in the softness sensation.

In recent years, many researchers have been investigating the addition of other modalities such as haptics to the visual and auditory based VR experience using HMDs. On the other hand, these haptic devices are cumbersome to wear and their fingers cannot be moved freely. We solved these problems by embedding a suction tactile presentation device in an HMD and presenting the finger sensation in a VR environment to the face. In this paper, we investigate how changes in the suction hole and suction pressure affect the tactile sensation. As a result, we found that a dense arrangement of 2 mm suction holes can provide strong tactile sensation even with weak suction pressure, and that pressure sensitivity is also easily presented.

Along with spread of low-cost HMD and high-quality VR experience, many proposals have been made to improve the VR experience by providing tactile information to the fingertips. However, attaching and detaching a device is difficult and the movement of the finger are limited. In order to solve these problems, we have proposed Haptopus that incorporates a suction tactile presentation mechanism in the HMD. Haptopus can transfer the fingertip tactile information to around the eyes without impairing the quality of the experience and improving the wearability. In this paper, we investigated that the hardness of VR object could be presented by the adjustment of dynamic air suction pressure in order to increase the types of haptic information.

Stickiness feel is important in Skin-care products. Although several studies have been made on quantification of stickiness feel of skin-care products by using peel force, the relation of both is still controversial. It has been recognized that stickiness distribution reflects stickiness feel. Therefore, as a first step we measured stickiness distribution of two products. The result shows a hypothesis that the ratio of stickiness in peripheral area to ones in center and middle area is related with stickiness (“betatsukanasa”) feel. It is necessary for further study to measure more products and be analyzed by statistical methods.
