東京理科大学にてトライボロジー研究室を主宰している佐々木信也教授に師事。 その後、学術振興会特別研究員として研究に従事し、同研究室で博士(工学)を取得後、同学科宮武研究室助教に着任。 2021年4月からは、関西大学助教に着任し、2023年4月准教授に昇任。2025年3月から本学のトライボロジー研究室准教授に着任。 研究対象は、潤滑油が摩擦界面で引き起こす現象の理解。 特に、イオン液体の潤滑メカニズムの解明に注力している。また、摩擦係数のリアルタイム制御システムの構築を行っている。 現在では、半導体製造用、宇宙用潤滑剤としての応用を目指している。

    Ionic liquids (ILs) are being considered as novel lubricant additives to improve the friction and anti-wear characteristics of sliding surfaces. Because ILs consist of only cations and anions, their physical and chemical properties can be easily tailored by modifying their combination. These features enable to design of specific ILs for a given tribological system. However, there are few reports on the effect of ILs used as lubricant additives on the friction and anti-wear characteristics of sliding surfaces. Moreover, it is necessary to investigate the synergism between ILs and other lubricant additives to achieve high practical efficiency. Therefore, in this study, two ILs with different cations but similar anions were used in combination with an anti-wear additive, zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP), and the resultant wear and friction characteristics of the worn surfaces were analyzed. We found that the tribological performance under steel/steel sliding conditions was dependent on the chemical composition of the ILs. In addition, mixed ZDDP and IL solutions exhibited lower friction and wear when compared to ZDDP alone. It is considered that the excellent lubrication and frictional performance observed with the mixed lubricant solutions is due to the formation of tribofilms comprising of ZDDP and IL on the sliding surface.

    © 2020 by the authors. Ionic liquids have unique characteristics, which render them ideal candidates as new base oils or additives. In particular, there are great expectations from the combination of diamond-like carbon and cyano-based ionic liquids. Lubricating properties of cyano-based ionic liquids have been studied on specific tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films. After lubrication, ta-C film/ta-C film contact interface exhibits exceedingly low friction. Therefore, it is necessary to understand this low friction phenomenon. The current study evaluated the lubricating mechanism of cyano-based ionic liquids against ta-C films. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (BMIM)(DCN) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethane (BMIM)(TCC) were used as lubricants, with the latter exhibiting low friction coefficient of 0.03. Steel cylinders and disks with ta-C films were used as test specimens. Raman spectroscopy, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) helped us understand the mechanism of low friction induced by (BMIM)(TCC). Graphitization of the ta-C film at high temperatures might have caused the reduction in friction between the films. Similarly, anion adsorption on the worn surface at high temperatures also led to reduced friction. However, the TGA result showed a different trend than that of the sliding test. Our results indicate that the cyano-based ionic liquids underwent tribo-decomposition at low temperatures. Further, a minimum temperature was required for the adsorption of anions onto the sliding surface.

    Ionic liquids have high potential as novel lubricants because of their unique physical properties. In particular, halogen-free ionic liquids are low environmental-load lubricants. Unfortunately, these ionic liquids exhibit a poor tribological performance against bearing steel. However, they exhibit high performances against diamondlike carbon (DLC) under the high vacuum condition. The influence of DLC species on tribological performances and the reaction mechanism of halogen-free ionic liquids on the worn surface are still unknown. This investigation evaluates the tribological performances of halogen-free ionic liquids (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([EMIM][DCN]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethane ([EMIM][TCC]), and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetracyanoborate ([EMIM][TCB])) against two types of DLC (tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) and hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H)). The tribological performances of ionic liquids differed by the anion structure and the type of DLCs. The DLCs lubricated with [EMIM][DCN] and ta-C lubricated with [EMIM][TCC] exhibited a low friction coefficient. On the other hand, other ionic liquids exhibited the high friction coefficients against DLCs. A time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometer analysis indicated that the tribo-decomposition of halogen-free ionic liquids and the adsorption of anion achieve a low friction. The chemical activity of nascent surfaces plays a very important role in achieving tribo-decomposition. However, because this activity of DLC was lower than that of bearing steel, [EMIM][TCC] exhibited a poor tribological performance. Thus, although the tribological performances of halogen-free ionic liquids can be improved by using DLC as sliding materials, there is also the possibility of inhibiting the formation of an adsorption layer derived from ionic liquids.

    The interfacial structures of cyano-based room-temperature ionic liquids play a very important role in reducing friction. However, the presence of water impairs their tribological performance. The interfacial structures and friction forces of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide, [EMIM][DCN], and the effect of water on these structures and forces were investigated using atomic force microscopy. In addition, the interaction of water and [EMIM][DCN] was evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Multiple repulsive layers were observed in the [EMIM][DCN] solution. This solution showed low friction force because these repulsive layers worked as protective layers against friction. On the other hand, the specific repulsive layer characteristics of [EMIM][DCN] could not be observed in a [EMIM][DCN] + 2 wt% H2O solution. FT-IR results indicated that the layer structure of [EMIM][DCN] was disturbed by the addition of H2O. Therefore, the solution containing water exhibited a high friction force.

    The properties of ionic liquids make them an appealing choice for use as lubricant oil. However, the effect of moisture on the friction properties of ionic liquids needs to be elucidated. Moisture affects the disappearance and growth of the lubricating layer of these liquids. To express the high friction reduction effect, the lubricating layer formed by the ionic liquids at the friction interface plays a very important role. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the relationship between these liquid structures and moisture, for the development of design guidelines for new ionic liquid structures that can achieve very low friction. This investigation evaluated the friction properties and the friction mechanisms of hydrophobic ionic liquids (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide [BMIM][DCN] and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BMIM][BF4]), and a hydrophilic ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [BMIM][PF6]) under various atmospheres (vacuum, dry air, and air) to better understand the effect of moisture on the friction properties. The hydrophilic ionic liquid exhibited differences in the friction properties depending on the atmosphere, while the hydrophobic ionic liquid remained unaffected by the atmosphere. The adsorption layer formed by [BMIM][DCN] was anion-rich, both ion-rich, and cation-rich in vacuum, dry air, and air respectively. In air, [BMIM][BF4] developed corrosive wear and the reaction layer formed by [BMIM][PF6] increased with moisture.

    This study investigated the effects of the electric potential of a surface on the lubricating capabilities of ionic liquids. The friction coefficient of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide was unchanged by the electric potential of the surface because this ionic liquid has difficulty moving in a solution owing to its low conductivity. However, the friction coefficient, when lubricated with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tris(pentafluoroethyl) trifluorophosphate and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, changed when the electric potential of the surface was varied. At -2.0 V, cations were adsorbed on the sliding surface. The alkyl chain of cations supported the load and achieved a low friction coefficient. However, at 2.0 V, anions were adsorbed on the sliding surface. Such ions cannot support the load, and thus reach a high friction coefficient.

    This study investigates the lubricating mechanism of cyano-based ionic liquids on steel surfaces using Q-MS, ToF-SIMS, and TGA. [EMIM][DCN], [EMIM][TCC], [EMIM][TCB], [BMPL][DCN], [BMPL][TCC], and [BMPL][TCB] were selected as lubricants. [EMIM][TCB] exhibited the highest friction coefficient. The others exhibited very low friction coefficients of less than 0.08. Q-MS analysis indicated that the cation components were detected in outgassing during sliding tests. However, anion components were not detected. ToF-SIMS results showed that the anions remained on the worn surfaces which would lead low friction coefficients. To achieve low friction coefficient, the tribo-decomposition of the ionic liquids and adsorption of anion were required. TGA indicated thermal stability was an index for tribo-decomposition on the nascent steel surface.

    Ionic liquids are expected to become increasingly popular lubricants as they feature a number of attractive properties. This investigation focused on sulfate and phosphate anion-based ionic liquids and the improvement in lubricating performance with the addition of these anions. However, the detailed lubricating mechanism and effect of alkyl chain length on tribochemical reactions are unclear. This study investigates tribochemical reaction processes using a quadrupole mass spectrometer ( Q-MS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Seven types of ionic liquids: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogensulfate ([EMIM][HSO4]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methylsulfate ([EMIM][MSU]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate ([EMIM][ESU]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium n-octylsulfate ([EMIM][OSU]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dimethyl phosphate ([EMIM][DMP]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate ([EMIM][DEP]), and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dibutyl phosphate ([EMIM][DBP]), were selected as lubricants. The friction coefficient of sulfate anion-based ionic liquids increased as their alkyl chain lengthened. However, wear scar diameter in this case showed the opposite tendency. The friction coefficient and wear scar diameter of phosphate anion-based ionic liquids increased with an increase in the alkyl chain length. Q-MS results indicated that the main outgassing components during sliding were the cation components, whereas the anion remained on the sliding surface and formed a tribofilm. The ionic liquids with short alkyl chains reacted with the sliding surface easily and led to very low friction. However, corrosive wear occurred in the case of the sulfate anion. On the other hand, anions with long alkyl chains underwent gradual tribochemical reactions because that led the mitigation of contact with nascent surface. The phosphate-based ionic liquids with long alkyl chains were unable to cause the lubricating effect due to low reactivity.

    The tribological performance of halogen-free ionic liquids at steel-steel and diamond-like carbon (DLC)DLC contacts was investigated. Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) and tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) were used as test specimens. Friction tests were carried out on steel-steel, a-C:H-a-C:H, and ta-C-ta-C contacts by using a reciprocating cylinder-on-disk tribotester lubricated with two different types of halogen-free ionic liquids: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([BMIM][DCN]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide ([BMIM][TCC]. From the results of friction tests, the ta-C-ta-C tribopair lubricated with [BMIM][DCN] or [BMM][TCC] exhibited an ultralow friction coefficient of 0.0180.03. On the other hand, ultralow friction was not observed at the steel-steel and a-C:H-a-C:H contacts. Measurements obtained with a laser scanning microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM) showed that a chemical reaction film, derived from the ionic liquid lubricant used, was formed on the steel surfaces. However, this chemical reaction film was not observed on either of the DLC surfaces. The AFM results showed that there were high-viscosity products on the ta-C surfaces, that the wear tracks on the ta-C surfaces exhibited low frictional properties, and that the ta-C surfaces were extremely smooth after the friction tests. Based on these results, it was concluded that an ionic liquid-derived adsorbed film formed on the ta-C surface and resulted in the ultralow friction when lubricated with a halogen-free ionic liquid.

    Plasma jet sterilization of cutting fluid was performed under atmospheric pressure, and the tribological properties of the resulting fluid were investigated. The mechanisms of atmospheric-pressure plasma jet sterilization were also clarified. The number of bacterial colonies in the sterilized fluid was reduced by more than 90% compared with the untreated fluid. After exposure to ultraviolet light, no comparable reduction was observed. We concluded that the sterilization observed in the study was caused by the reaction of excited N-2, N, and Ar. The IR spectra of the plasma-treated cutting fluid were the same as those of the untreated fluid. However, the transmittance of the C=O peak decreased in proportion to the discharge voltage. The treated cutting fluids maintained a low friction coefficient 2.4 times longer than the untreated fluid. The sliding angle and adhesive energy of the untreated cutting fluid were considerably lower than those of the unused cutting fluid. Furthermore, the sliding angle and adhesive energy of the plasma-treated cutting fluid were higher than those of the untreated cutting fluid. Therefore, we consider that the lower friction coefficient of plasma-treated cutting fluid as compared to that of the untreated cutting fluid is related to this result. The study demonstrated that the life of a cutting fluid can be prolonged by this novel plasma treatment, with an associated improvement in tribological properties.

    Ionic liquids have been used as novel high-performance lubricants. However, fluorine-based ionic liquids cause corrosion of materials by the formation of FeF2 and FeF3. This study focuses on cyano-based ionic liquids, as they have low corrosion tendencies owing to the absence of fluorine in their structures. However, cyano-based ionic liquids are hydrophilic, and hence, the effect of ambient conditions (e.g., atmospheric moisture) on the tribological properties needs to be investigated. This study reports the tribological properties of two types of cyano-based ionic liquids 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethane under air, vacuum, and dry air environments. Their friction coefficients were found to be dependent on the ambient condition. Both the ionic liquids exhibited low friction coefficients in vacuum. The time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry results indicated that the anion was adsorbed on the worn surface under vacuum conditions, and the adsorbed anion exhibited a low friction. In dry air, the cation was adsorbed on the worn surface, and the adsorbed cation exhibited a higher friction coefficient than the adsorbed anion. In air, the cyano-based ionic liquids caused corrosion of the sliding material and exhibited a high friction coefficient, because of the absorption of moisture from air.

    Ionic liquids are expected to be used as a new lubricants and lubricant additives because of their unique properties. However, cyano-based ionic liquids have exhibited poor lubricating property with steel/steel contacts. We evaluated the lubricating properties of cyano-based ionic liquids with steel/hard materials contacts. TiO2, Al2O3, and tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) DLC were used as hard materials. Six types of ionic liquids, as combination of two types of cations ([EMIM], [BMPL]) and three types of cyanide anions ([DCN], [TCC] and [TCB]), were selected. In sliding tests of steel/TiO2 and steel/Al2O3 lubricated with [EMIM][DCN], [BMPL][DCN], [EMIM][TCC], [BMPL][TCC] exhibited low friction coefficients of less than 0.1. In addition, steel/Al2O3 and steel/ta-C DLC lubricated with [BMPL][TCB] exhibited very low friction coefficients less than 0.05. On the other hand, high friction coefficients were observed at steel/TiO2 and steel/Al2O3 contacts lubricated with [EMIM][TCB] and steel/ta-C DLC contact lubricated with [EMIM] cation group. Peeling of the ta-C DLC was observed when [EMIM] cation group was used. ToF-SIMS analysis indicated that the anion was adsorbed on the worn surfaces in the case of low frictional conditions. However, both ions were hardly observed in the case of high frictional conditions. It is considered that the ionic liquids underwent tribo-decomposition on the worn surfaces at low friction coefficient. To evaluate the degree of tribo-decomposition, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used. TGA results indicated that [EMIM][TCB], which exhibited high friction coefficient, had the most highest stability among all ionic liquids. Low stability ionic liquids, however, showed a tendency for low friction coefficient. These results suggest that lubricating properties are related to the stability of ionic liquids.

    Ionic liquids have potential for use as novel high-performance lubricants because of their attractive characteristics such as low volatility, high-thermal stability, and oxidation stability. It is known that ionic liquids exhibit excellent lubricity for metals because of halogen constituents in their molecular structure. However, occurrence of corrosive damage on the contacting surfaces lubricated with the ionic liquids has also been reported. To prevent damage due to corrosion, it is necessary to use halogen-free ionic liquids whose lubricity may be inferior compared with that of halogen-containing ionic liquids. In this study, the lubricity of halogen-free ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([BMIM][DCN]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethane ([BMIM][TCC]) was evaluated by using a reciprocating sliding friction and wear tester (SRV Optimol)) using an oscillating steel cylinder on H-free DLC disk test configuration under boundary lubrication conditions. The SRV test results showed that H-free DLC with [BMIM][TCC] at 50N exhibited superior lubricity than that with [BMIM][DCN] at the same load. In order to understand the observed, the worn surfaces of test specimens were analyzed by using Raman spectroscopy, the friction coefficient of the film by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the chemical composition by time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). From Raman spectroscopic analysis results, graphitization of the transfer films of both [BMIM][DCN] and [BMIM][TCC] did not occur. From AFM results, the topography of [BMIM][TCC] was smooth as compared with that of [BMIM][DCN]. Thus, it was considered that the surface roughness affected the lubricity. In addition, the tribofilm derived from [BMIM][TCC] also affected the lubricity because it showed low friction coefficient on the flat position. From ToF-SIMS results, it was considered that [BMIM][DCN] itself adsorbed on H-free DLC surface. On the other hand, [BMIM][TCC] is thermally decomposed by friction and generated isolated CN and covering the H-free DLC surface. The tribofilm formed by [BMIM][TCC] exhibited lower friction coefficient than that by [BMIM][DCN].

    Ionic liquids are expected to function as novel lubricants owing to their attractive characteristics such as high thermal stability and low vapor pressure. In order for ionic liquids to be used as lubricants, knowledge of their corrosion and lubricating properties must be obtained. However, the reaction mechanism and decomposition of ionic liquids have not yet been sufficiently clarified. In this study, we elucidate the tribological properties and tribochemical reaction mechanism by analyzing outgassing generated by the decomposition or reaction of ionic liquids [EMIM][DCN], [EMIM][TCB], and [BMPL][TCB] on a sliding surface. From our results, [BMPL][TCB] showed the lowest friction coefficient and [EMIM][DCN] had a lower friction coefficient than [EMIM][TCB]. In all cases, outgassing from the ionic liquid was confirmed, and main outgassing products were derived from the cation. [BMPL][TCB] had the largest amount of outgassing. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy analysis showed that tribochemical reactions involving the anion occurred. From sliding tests and experimental analyses, it is revealed that the [DCN] anion showed superior lubricating properties to the [TCB] anion.

    Sliding parts such as rotating parts and reciprocating parts are often found in machines, and resin plane bearings are widely used to support sliding parts without lubrication or greasing. The applicant focused on urushi lacquer, a natural resin, as a resin material with high hardness and excellent chemical resistance, and proposed a resin sliding bearing with a solid lubricant added to lacquer. In this research project, the sliding and mechanical properties of resin sliding bearings using PTFE, graphite and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) as solid lubricants added to urushi lacquer were evaluated under various conditions.

    Materials used in the aerospace field that will lead to Japanese industry in the future are made of difficult-to-machine materials. Therefore, it is very important to improve the lubricating properties of difficult-to-machine materials. This study attempted to develop a new machining oil using ionic liquids as an immediate countermeasure.
    As a result of carrying out this study, it is succeeded in developing a machining oil with a low coefficient of friction for stainless steel and titanium alloys.
