【教育】農業は多様な農業生態系で営まれている. 農業への理解と興味を深められるよう, 技術(専門)職員らと農場実習に取り組んでいる.農業の一連(耕耘、栽培,収穫,収量調査,食味等), および, 農業技術の過去と現在,そして将来広まるであろう技術を取り入れ、また海外の農業についても伝えるようにしている. 見本園では普段あまり目にしないような有用作物を紹介している. 【研究】田畑輪換(水田と水田転換畑)では, 水をはじめ栽培環境が大きく異なる. 湛水した土壌では, 土壌中の酸素が低下し, 土壌の養分形態が変化, 還元化が引き起こされる. 湿地に適応してきた作物(例. イネ)と, 畑に適応してきた作物(例. 麦,大豆)とでは, 湛水土壌への反応性が様々である(=耐湿性が異なる). より広域な条件の土壌に適する遺伝資源を探索し, その適応術を研究している.
