Interplanetary dust particles are highly enriched with 3He implanted by the solar wind, enabling the reconstruction of extraterrestrial dust fluxes to Earth from sedimentary 3He records. However, the fluxes of extraterrestrial dust during periods predating the Cretaceous remain poorly constrained. In this study, we present the first comprehensive reconstruction of extraterrestrial 3He fluxes for much of the Triassic period (approximately 246-212 Ma) based on pelagic-bedded cherts preserved in Jurassic accretionary complexes in Japan. We reconstructed extraterrestrial 3He fluxes after correcting for dilution by radiolarian-derived biogenic silica. The records reveal long-term flux enhancements during the Ladinian and late Carnian (Tuvalian) intervals, reaching amplitudes approximately 2-3 times the background level and persisting for ∼3-4 Myr. These features are inconsistent with short-lived influx events, such as comet showers or asteroid breakups, and are instead comparable to long-term background variations in the Cretaceous and Cenozoic records. A sharp 3He flux peak at ∼215-216 Ma is accompanied by elevated 3He/4He ratios, indicating a sudden influx of fine-grained extraterrestrial material. The timing of this excursion closely coincides with the Manicouagan impact event (215.4 Ma), suggesting a link between asteroid disruption and enhanced dust production during the Triassic.

The Norian/Rhaetian boundary (NRB) is marked by faunal turnover and global carbon cycle perturbation. Several possible causes of the environmental perturbation across the NRB have been proposed, including the volcanic activity from the Angayucham Terrane and an impact event related to the Rochechouart crater. Evaluating these proposed causes requires high-resolution biostratigraphy and accurate interregional correlation of carbon isotope curves. However, such comparisons remain challenging due to the limited resolution and inconsistent calibration of radiolarian and conodont biostratigraphic frameworks. Here, we present integrated, high-resolution radiolarian and conodont biostratigraphy and organic carbon isotope (δ13C<inf>org</inf>) data from an Upper Triassic pelagic sequence in the Sasso di Castalda section of the Lagonegro Basin, southern Italy. Our biostratigraphic analyses reveal two radiolarian assemblages, the Betraccium deweveri and Proparvicingula moniliformis zones, indicating an age from uppermost Norian to lowermost Rhaetian. The first occurrence of the conodont Misikella posthernsteini s.s. (sensu stricto) constrains the base of the Rhaetian. The δ13C<inf>org</inf> profile in the latest Norian exhibits an overall negative shift characterized by positive and negative fluctuations that correspond to the globally recognized carbon isotope excursion at this boundary. Furthermore, based on our conodont biostratigraphic data, the deposition of the platinum group elements-enriched layer reported in the studied section is constrained to the latest Norian, suggesting a correlation with the Rochechouart impact. Since this layer corresponds to the onset of the negative δ13C<inf>org</inf> shift, our new δ13C<inf>org</inf> record, integrated with high-resolution biostratigraphy, could contribute to understanding the cause of extinction across the NRB.

The Norian Stage of the Late Triassic represents a significant interval in geological history marked by environmental and biological evolutions. One notable event during this time is the late Norian warming event (W3), occurring in the late Norian. Globally recorded, the warming event is associated with carbon cycle perturbations, temperature increases, changes in biodiversity, and enhanced weathering intensity. Previous studies have focused on carbon isotopes, sedimentology, and biostratigraphy in the Baoshan block. However, information on environmental changes in this area during the Norian Stage remains limited. In this study, we utilized redox conditions indexes (V/Cr, U/Th, Mo<inf>EF</inf>/U<inf>EF</inf>, and Ce/Ce⁎) and paleo-productivity proxies (P<inf>org</inf>, Ba<inf>xs</inf>) to reconstruct the ocean paleoenvironment in the HYB section of the Baoshan block. Two stages of reducing conditions and paleo-productivity fluctuations were identified during the late Norian warming event interval. In addition, the size of 1606 well-preserved adult conodont pectiniform elements from the HYB section was measured. The mean length of conodonts increased before the Alaunian-Sevatian boundary and then decreased significantly after the boundary in the Sevatian. Conodont size variations are typically related to changes in living environments, but our study found no direct relation between changes in redox conditions, paleo-productivity, and variations in conodont size in the Baoshan block. It may be due to the predominant conodont fauna, Mockina, being surface water dwellers. These surface-dwelling conodonts were not influenced by changes in seafloor redox conditions in relatively deep water. The direct evidence is instead that the size variation of conodonts is more likely affected by temperature changes in Tethyan surface seawater during the late Norian warming event.

    Abstract

This work presents a detailed petrographic, geochemical, and isotopic characterization of 49 samples from the Rochechouart impact structure (Limousin, France) recovered during the 2017 drilling campaign. The aims of this study were to constrain the processes that affected the target lithologies and led to the formation of the melt-rich impactites preserved in the Rochechouart impact structure today. Formed on a gneissic and granitic target, the current lithologies observed in the Rochechouart impact structure and in the drilled cores range from the fractured target to the impact melt rocks, forming whole impactite sequences with breccias, suevites, and impactoclastites. Two different types of impact melt rocks (described as red and yellow in this study) are found. The dichotomy in impact melt rocks has previously been proposed to be linked to the two major target lithologies in the region, with the red impact melt rocks originating mainly from the gneiss lithologies and the yellow type dominated by a granitic precursor.

Impact-induced hydrothermal alteration affected all recovered samples but is particularly pronounced in the case of the yellow impact melt rocks, as highlighted by the increases in fluid-mobile element concentrations, with up to four times the concentration of K2O compared to basement lithologies. The light rare earth elements (La, Yb) also record hydrothermal alteration. However, for the other lithologies, the level of alteration remains limited and allows the meteoritic component to be traced among the melt-rich lithologies, recorded by the increases in siderophile elements (moderate increases in Ni, Cr, and Co and high increases in Os, Ir, Ru, Pt, Pd, and Re) in all characterized red impact melt rocks. The Os isotopic compositions of the red impact melt rocks show meteoritic contributions up to 0.5% CI chondrite.

The Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary asteroid impact is recorded globally as a negative 187Os/188Os excursion, including in sediments recovered from the IODP-ICDP drilling within the peak ring of the Chicxulub structure in the Gulf of Mexico. The reconstructed marine 187Os/188Os curves can be used for global age correlations on the ~10 kyr scale. However, the versatility of Os isotope clock between the proximal and distal sites remains unclear. This paper presents 187Os/188Os records from early Paleocene sediments deposited in the Chicxulub impact basin and Mexican sites with biochronological scales. The results for these proximal sites show a recovery timescale of ~700 kyr, which is significantly longer than that of the distal sites (~200 kyr). The interval showing the 187Os/188Os decline coincides with the enrichment of hydrothermally-derived Mn, implying that hydrothermal venting at the Chicxulub structure may have played a role in the marine chemistry and ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE) was a short interval of extreme rainfall in the Late Triassic that caused significant changes in marine ecosystems. Global warming induced by Wrangellia volcanism is thought to have resulted in oceanic anoxia during the CPE, but the global extent, duration, and severity of anoxia, and its effects on major marine taxa, remain unclear. To address this, we examined an equatorial record of conditions in the Panthalassa Ocean during the CPE, focusing on marine Os isotope data, redox conditions, and conodont and radiolarian biostratigraphy. The results show that Wrangellia volcanism peaked in the latest Julian (early Carnian), coinciding with development of reducing conditions in the deep-sea Panthalassa. A strong conodont turnover occurred during the period of oceanic anoxia, whereas radiolarians were less affected and their diversity increased after the recovery from anoxia. The increased radiolarian diversity during the early Tuvalian (late Carnian) can be attributed to chemical weathering and enhanced nutrient fluxes associated with global warming and the more humid climate of Pangea.

We investigated the geochemical and rock magnetic properties of the magnetostratigraphically calibrated Pignola-Abriola section (Italy) in order to understand the climatic perturbations that characterize the late Norian-early Rhaetian interval (Late Triassic). We performed experiments on anhysteretic and isothermal remanence (ARM and IRM) and on magnetic susceptibility (χ) to obtain the rock magnetic parameters necessary for our paleoclimatic investigation. An episode of increase in the relative quantity of hematite, suggesting the enhanced subaerial oxidation of iron minerals, was identified in the Norian from ~217 Ma in the Alaunian up to ~211 Ma in the early Sevatian, followed by a decline up to 207-206 Ma at the end of the Norian (late Sevatian). The results of geochemical and multivariate statistical analyses support a long-term increase and reduction in rock weathering, confirming and extending previous 87Sr / 86Sr data from the Pizzo Mondello section (Italy). Possible causes of these long-term weathering trends are the multiphase uplifting of the Cimmerian orogen, occurring at mid-northern latitudes along the southern margin of Asia in the Late Triassic, and/or the northward motion of Pangea across the equatorial humid belt. Rapid excursions in oxidized iron minerals have also been observed across the Norian-Rhaetian boundary, the origin of which still has to be determined.

The late Norian “chaotic carbon episode” in the Late Triassic has been identified in North America, Italy, and China, reflecting a global carbon isotope perturbation. Although it has been suggested that catastrophic events, such as the emplacement of large igneous provinces, were the cause of this perturbation, direct evidence for volcanic forcing is lacking. In order to investigate the cause of the global “chaotic carbon episode” in the late Norian, we obtained osmium and organic carbon isotope data (187Os/188Os and δ13Corg) and major, trace, and highly siderophile element data and documented changes in radiolarian assemblages in a middle–upper Norian bedded chert succession in the Sakahogi section, Japan, deposited in a low-latitude zone of the Panthalassa Ocean. The δ13Corg data exhibit a significant carbon isotope excursion (CIE) during the late Norian (Sevatian 1) Mockina bidentata conodont zone. High-resolution 187Os/188Os data exhibit two negative shifts during the CIE, which are interpreted as related to volcanic activity. The biostratigraphic age and Os isotopic mass balance considerations for the ocean suggest that the onset of Angayucham volcanism was the source of unradiogenic Os that caused the decrease in seawater 187Os/188Os ratios during the Sevatian. A remarkable diversification of radiolarians with a large Mesosaturnalis bloom occurred during the low-187Os/188Os interval. This suggests that the Sevatian Mesosaturnalis species are likely indicators of the onset of Angayucham volcanism.

The end-Triassic extinction event (∼ 201.5 Ma) is one of the five major mass extinction events in Earth's history, however, considerable discussion continues on the exact causes and timing of the event. This is because, whilst certain geochemical data on T-J sections appears to be largely comparable globally, with for example a significant (up to 6‰) negative carbon-isotope (δ13C) excursion at the extinction horizon, more often than not other geochemical variations are neither uniform nor fully consistent between sections. Critical to this discussion is that the majority of the studied sections containing the end-Triassic extinction event are limited to shallow marine or terrestrial sections, which are prone to discontinuities and hiatuses. In this study, we present carbon isotopes (δ13Ccarb), total organic carbon (TOC), major and trace, mercury (Hg) and highly siderophile elements (HSE), osmium-isotope compositions and paleomagnetic data of a relatively less studied deep-marine T-J succession in the Budva Basin, Čanj, Montenegro. At Čanj, deep-marine Triassic limestones are abruptly interrupted by a ∼ 6 cm finely laminated clay layer, before transitioning to more argillaceous Jurassic red beds. The clay layer is interpreted to represent the end-Triassic extinction interval and is characterized by a negative carbon isotope excursion, relative heavy rare earth element (HREE) enrichment, Hg increase, HSE enrichment and a sharp shift to unradiogenic osmium-isotopic ratios. This establishes the Čanj section as a unique and well-preserved outcrop that exquisitely encapsulates the end-Triassic extinction in the Tethyan marine realm. The distinct geochemical markers recorded at Čanj are consistent with the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province as the main driver behind the end-Triassic extinction.

In this study, we conducted a stable isotope analysis of osmium using sediment samples obtained from the Permian/Triassic boundary, the Late Triassic, and the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. While we did not detect osmium stable isotope anomalies indicating an influx of cosmic dust, our analyses of osmium isotope and platinum group element concentrations revealed an increase in the influx of extraterrestrial material in all of our samples. Notably, we commonly observed a gradual decrease in osmium isotope ratios below the impact ejecta layers, which suggests an increase in cosmic dust influx prior to large impact events.

During the Phanerozoic, there were sudden increases in the cosmic dust flux to Earth, and a correlation between these events and mass extinctions has been suggested. However, the causes of these increases and their impact on the global environment remain poorly understood. This study used helium (He) isotope analysis to conduct basic research and reconstruct the cosmic dust flux during the Mesozoic, as well as to decipher the environmental changes caused by massive influxes of cosmic dust. As a result, we reconstructed the temporal variation of the extraterrestrial 3He flux over approximately 80 million years, from the Asselian stage of the early Permian to the Norian stage of the Late Triassic.
