1. | Toshiyuki Kono, The World Heritage and Water, The International Symposium on Water and Culture, 2020.02, there are 869 World Cultural Heritage sites, 213 Natural Heritage sites and 39 Mixed sites. When we closely look at the World Heritage List, we could identify various relationships between human beings and water. Liangzhu in China and Petra in Jordan are archaeological evidence of water management system, while the water supply system in Augusburg in Germany represents a water management system which was established by the 15th century and is still functioning today. Villa d’Este in Tivoli, in Italy, created in 16th century is a representative example of water garden. The Loire Valley in France is a cultural landscape developed along the Loire River. The Industrial Revolution in 19th century, the relationship between human beings and water has changed. In the 20th century, however, technology-driven development and heritage values have been often placed in strained relationship. Hence for instance many canals were reclaimed to build highways. In today’s world, where we live with SDGs as guiding principles, we need to revisit the relationship with water.. |
2. | TOSHIYUKI KONO, Reconstruction and Knowledge transfer for future making, The challenges of World Heritage recovery. International conference on reconstruction, 2018.05, [URL], Reconstruction of cultural heritage is not one-time act, but a process. It has multi-layered aspects, even if it is about the reconstruction of a single monument. It could be more complicated, if it is about the reconstruction of towns or cities. One-size-fits-all approach would not be helpful. Case studies are indispensable. However, more a case study is, the more difficult to apply it to other cases. So a common framework is crucial for comparative analysis. My paper illustrated such needs and presented a theoretical model for such a framework.. |
